Review: Led by zouk music hero, Franck Donatien, Crystal was an eight-piece combo from the French West-Indies. They originally released two albums back in the mid-'80s, and now Favorite Recordings have proudly acquired the rights to reissue the first one, 1984's Music Life. Boasting bass, guitars, synthersizers, two drummers and a whole brass section, to name but a few, this ain't no minimalist jam. Instead there are six examples of high-end musicianship, songs and grooves. Highlights include the strutting clavinet-heavy boogie of "Music Life", the proggy Cuban jazz freak out "Santo Domingo" and the Latin cocktail lounge seducer "Lan Mise".

Review: Sound Pellegrino's SND PE compilations to date have each offered unique windows on the world of futuristic club music. The label's fourth installment comes under the sub-title Melodic Mechanisms, and as the name suggests, it's a collection of bright club tunes with intricate structures at play under the hood. Doline's "Karidja" kicks off with a track indebted to the history of trance music, while Her Records co-founder Sudanim comes through with a Jersey Club-influenced banger in the form of "Seydou". Other highlights - of which there are many - include Chilly Gonzales and P. Morris collaborating on the hip hop slow jam "Late Visitor" and the cut-up funk of Moleskin's "Imagine".

Review: Hold up - Sound Pellegrino crew inside! Number three in their Sound Pellegrino Presents SNDPE series and as per usual, it's jam packed full of killers from both label casuals and loosely affiliated clan members. As the name suggests, the sound is inherently raw and gritty, direct from the gutter and packing enough punch to blow your system out. House, ghetto, bass, you name it, there's something in here for everyone and if you're into the Night Slugs end of the spectrum, then look no further! Toyc's "Analog Drums" is particularly gnarly thanks to its gritty backbone, but it's all highly alluring and comes heavily recommended. Cop it, son!

Review: Sound Pellegrino comes through correct once again with Crystal, and reaffirms their status as one of the most interesting and successful independent label in the game. They've had a lot of big names, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 to name a few, but Crystal is bound to make a name for himself after something so alluring and funky as "Get It!?" featuring Teki Latex, and the bouncy electro swirls of "Telephonic" - a real lesson in 808 flexing. "Construction" is another full-blown monster and its raucous beat paradigms just jump out the mix and into your cortex, whilst "Crystal Forest" sounds like a techno replacement for Nintendo's Zelda series. TIP!
