Michael Melchner - "Sumu" - (8:06)
123 BPM Jorge Savoretti - "Sul Meno" - (7:48) 125 BPM
Review: Love Letters From Oslo is best known for its championing of 'tool house' but Sumu shows a different side to its canon. The title track, by Michael Melchner, sees chiming bells and floating synths ride over a stripped back, bleepy rhythm. It's like early Detroit techno paired with Thomas Melchior's most reduced tracks - and the resonating bass ensures that it retains a distinctly soulful edge. Jorge Savoretti's "Sul Meno" is more in keeping with the label's trademark sound, but here too there's a difference. Rolling bongo drums provide the requsite backing track, but the filtered chords, that build and build to a sensuous climax, are reminiscent of classic Ian Pooley house releases.
