Review: Next up from the Midas Touch team, a collection of rave ammunition you won't want to miss out on as M-zine arrives in full form, kicking off with the lurching low ends and haunting synthetic breathiness of 'CHNOPS', a serious monster indeed. From here, 'Monolith' slaps together reversing hi hat textures and a jerky sense of rhythm for a higher-ended journey through semi-neurotic synth textures, before the blistering sub barrages of 'TST' are let loose like cannon fire for an impactful drop. Jumpat then arrives on remix duty for 'Trepid' a cavernous display of drippy synthetic maneuvers, eerie atmospherics and rolling drum sounds, giving us an alternate final direction for the project. Spinline then delivers an even more wonky overhaul of this one to round off the project, doused in sizzling electronic synthesizer runs and subtle melodic inflections for good measure. Excellent work!

Review: One of drum & bass' hardest working servants is back in the Dispatch kitchen with this EP, as M-Zine takes his penchant for dirtiness and cooks up a storm across four delightful cuts. This particular incarnation of his sound is rough, with an old-school tonality that leans into the sounds of dBridge and others. 'Devise' is possibly the most unique, with a repetitive structure that bores a hole into your brain and lays the most gorgeous of eggs, a soulful yet devastatingly sharp concoction that is simply the definition of cross-genre goodness. 'Permeate' does just that, with a devilish, gruff bassline that spreads its tentacles throughout the whole track in super fashion. What an EP.

Review: Belgian producer M-Zine and Doc Scott's ThirtyOne Recordings is definitely a combination to get excited about. M-Zine makes tough, rolling beats for the likes of Dispatch and Overview, and his partnership with one of the scene's best curators has unsurprisingly birthed an instant classic of an EP. Redux is filled with metallic textures and other-worldly scapes, an abstract EP but one that's still deeply tied to fractious clubland rhythms. 'The Dread' is a great example, with a simple, repetitive structure but one whose expertly crafted bassline bores a hole into your soul with its perfectly balanced groove and sheer clarity of sound. One for the heads.

Review: DLR's Sofa Sound label has become a pillar of the scene in barely a handful of years, and this week they're following up their previously successful Sofa King Sick compilation with a second edition, this one equally packed to the rafters with both new and old school talent. It's a tour-de-force of the tough side of the genre and it's exemplified by 'Baja', courtesy of Scepticz, a Belgian producer who knows his way around the controls and who proves it once more, as jagged synth lines cut across its snapping, two-step arrangement with all the force and subtlety of an underground train. Kodin makes an appearance on the superbly gruff 'Chronic', whilst The Sauce get deeper than usual on 'Ultrasonic'. Quintessential drum & bass that makes for essential listening.

Review: M-Zine is a Belgian producer who has been popping up in all the right places for a number of years now, building his profile up and raising the bar of his production capabilities. Dispatch, Utopia, Lifestyle and more lie in his past and now Sofa Sound is in his present, DLR's imprint and one which just gets it right, time and time again. Fractals is bent, broken and ragged, a forceful expression of tangled sonics and a three-tracker which starts hard and doesn't stop. 'Axiomatic' is relentless and pounding, a tunnel of blackish movement which you travel down at full speed, with the lights off and the seatbelt round your neck. There's something satisfying, almost Techno-esque, about tracks which are this consistent and it's a highlight from an absurdly good release.

Review: Getting you to more places than the Docklands Light Railway ever could, DLR takes his Sofa around the world and stops off at the homes and studios of some of the most exciting new generation artists. Every direction you check its severe roller situation as each participant step up with their finest. Highlights include the outlandish grizzles of Submarine & Scepticz's "Shingoki", the hair raising wriggles and flabby funk on Ill Truth on "Catch A Break", the infectious steppy late 90s buzzes of bossman DLR and Script's "El Mosquito" and the lush jazzy flurries of Trex's "Falling Down"... but that's just scratching the surface, the whole Sofa king thing is immense.

Showcasing not only Cyberfunk's ear for forefront compositions but drum & bass's current rude health the entire album is soaking in innovation. Highlights include the detailed percussion and walloping subs of Sub Marine's "Club Mate", Phentix's grizzly cyber-neuro "Complex System", Simple Technique's thundering halftime robot hip-hop stampede "Gorilla" and Xtrah's seasick flabby bass textures on "Nachtmuzik". Review: Longstanding Belgian duo M-Zine & Scepticz serve up a generous four-piece helping, each cut exploring the furthest tendrils of their established late night sound. With their bulbous subs and relentless grooves, both "Consonance" and "Play" hit hard like something Doc Scott would roll out at 3am, all heads-down and no light at the end of the tunnel. "Glimpsed" and "Singularity", meanwhile, take us on much steppier adventures where full focus is squared on the precision percussion and alien bass textures that help move the rhythm forward.
