Review: Since fellow Pleased as Punch co-founders Shapeshiters handled the label's previous release, it's only fitting that Saison get a chance to showcase their wares on this tidy two-tracker. They go for the jugular on opener 'I Can Make Good Music', a riotous, celebratory, life-affirming disco-house workout that makes extensive use of samples from a gritty, all-action, P-funk style workout of unknown origin (with a dash of Sugarhill-era disco-rap thrown in). 'Retrospective', meanwhile, rolls out a hypnotic, bass-heavy groove before teasing in dewy-eyed vocal samples, snaking sax lines and sun-soaked harmony vocals for added 'dancing outdoors at dusk' pleasure.

Review: The Future Disco crew has thrown open the doors to their imaginary 'Mirrorball Motel', a roadside hotel for disco misfits that's far more glamorous than it is sleazy (unlike most real-life motels). The 20-track musical accompaniment takes disco, boogie and nu-disco and bends it into fresh new shapes, with plenty of excitable house grooves and funk-fuelled peak-time workouts. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, the Reflex's squelchy rework of Roisin Murphy's 'Incapable', the hands-in-the-air rush of Saison's 'Rocinate', a fine neo-Italo throb-job from Breakbot & Yuksek ('Taqa'), the glassy-eyed Balearic disco/deep house fusion of Bondax ('Don't Want It') and the yacht disco-influenced sunshine of 'Strangers' by Kosmo Kint and Kapote.

Review: The label's suffered a little from Man Utd Syndrome over the years but for me, you just can't fault a Toolroom comp: they always offer great VFM, and as quick bi-annual (or whatever) snapshots of 'where house is at right now', they're unbeatable. The headline for this installment is that, where the Toolroom story over the past few years has mostly been about label boss Mark Knight getting back in touch with his soulful roots, this set leans a little more to the tuff n' techy side. But with 50 full-length tracks to choose from, plus two hour-long DJ mixes - and with that M1 drop on Azete's 'Born Bad' worth the price of admission on its own! - you really can't go wrong here.

Review: The title here pretty much says it all, as Midnight Riot serve up a 20-track 'best of' collection that's replete with quality disco- and boogie-inspired house nuggets. There's no room here to go into all the tracks one-by-one, but highlights for this reviewer include Danny Kane's 'Pop Goes The Cherry', which bites Ruby Turner's 90s classic 'Never Ever Gonna Give You Up', and 'Sheroes' by the heavy-hitting Manc double-act of Massey & Paulette - think Daft Punk's 'Teachers' but for people with two X chromosomes. Now dive in and find your own favourites - with cuts from the likes of Amp Fiddler, Paris Grey, Dylan Debut and Jet Boot Jack to choose from, it shouldn't be difficult!

Review: After celebrating their landmark 40th anniversary last year, long running Ibiza-based institution Cafe Del Mar are back for the next annual compilation in their series. Cafe Del Mar Chillhouse Mix XII does exactly what it says on the tin, and quite frankly no one else quite does it better. Highlights come from: legend Ian Pooley on the bumpin' late night groove of "Puzzled", Montreal staple Fred Everything getting the remix treatment by the ever reliable I:cube on the ultra deep sleaze of "Barbarella" and British nu-disco heroes Bent also getting a low slung rework by the mighty Ashley Beedle on "Friends". Elsewhere, Kiwi duo Chaos In The CBD keep "Cool But So.." by Detroit first wave pioneer Alton Miller in a typically soulful and emotive form with their perspective, while Chicago staple JT Donaldson delivers perfect mood music as always with his remix of Dirtytwo's "Hopeless" and Ron Trent showing us all exactly just what 'deepness' really is all about on his stunning version of Tevo Howard's classic "Without Me" feat Tracey Thorn - an oldie but still a goodie!

Review: Say 'Toolroom' to most people these days and they'll perhaps think first of peak-time tech-house stompers, but there's always been more to the label than that. Their 'Poolside' series, for instance, has been showcasing the more lounge-y, soulful and/or disco-infused side of house since 2014, and if you're a fan of such styles then this latest installment, packing cuts from the likes of Opolopo, Random Soul, Sebb Junior, Per QX, Saison and Ross Couch plus a host of up-and-comers, is unlikely to disappoint. The jazz-funk nouveau of Opolopo's 'Ginsu Knife' and Vertigini's garage-tinged 'Over You' are among the highlights of a collection with nary a Pavlovian snare roll or cheesy rave stab in sight.

You get 18 unmixed tracks for your DJ sets, plus a non-stop mix to help while away the hours while your skin turns a lovely shade of red. Musically, it's a mixture of baggy Balearic disco-pop (Luxxury, Stavanger Hunt and Future Disco's "Another Lifetime", dub disco influenced grooves (Soulwax remixing Tendts, the low slung strut of Lowheads' "Seven Afro Mood"), dreamy deep house sexiness (Henrik Vilard, Moon Boots) and evocative nu-disco haziness (the Italo-influenced thrust of 16BL's ace "You Are High"). Review: For as long as we can remember, Defected's annual Miami Music Week compilation has done a brilliant job showcasing tracks that we'll be dancing to a lot in the following weeks and months. Predictably, this year's volume is no different. There's the usual mixture of alternative remixes of familiar favourites from the previous 12 months (see David Penn's remix of Sophie Lloyd's gospel disco anthem "Calling Out" and I:Cube's brilliant revision of Peggy Gou's "It Makes You Forget"), previously released anthems (Horse Meat Disco and Amy Douglas's "Let's Go Dancing" and Ray Mang's delicious disco mix of Phenomenal Handclap Band's "Judge Not") and suitably big tunes that will soon become peak-time staples the world over (see the tracks by Bawrut, Low Steppa, Bsicits and Mighty Mouse).

Review: Up and coming London-based duo Saison return with a couple of brilliant tracks here, following up their successful debut for local institutions Large this past summer. The title track is a deep and sexy vocal number that follows the formula of late '90's NYC greats like King Street Sounds and Strictly Rhythm, with a swing fuelled rhythm and uplifting house organ stabs. Second offering "Naughty" has that kind of 'French touch' vibe going on with its loopy dancefloor sleaze; all swirling rhodes, funky bass and hypnotising vocal samples abound. As Large themselves best put it, it's "yet another outing to prove that Saison is poised to be among the most watched artists in 2017."

Review: In preparation for the forthcoming season on the White Island, Mark Knight's label drops this explosive release. David Keno, Stage Rockers & Samantha Nova's "I Like That" shows that house will continue to be Toolroom's main focus, albeit in this instance, a streamlined tribal take. The compilation also demonstrates that an appetite also remains for classic vocal tracks; Mash's "Shooting Brake" recalls the classic garage of early 90s New York, with its dark bass and layered vocal samples, while the infectious stabs, strings and plaintive piano of Playless' "Danser" could be as big as David Morales' late-'90s smash "Needin U".
