No Cube - (5:51) 115 BPM Hot
Presidential - (6:08) 110 BPM
Review: As summer splutters towards its conclusion, Phillip Lauer and Fabrizio Mammarella once again join forces for some "retro-Balearic" house action as Black Spuma. They begin in confident fashion, layering up bubbly acid lines, grandiose, loved-up chords and mid '80s Pet Shop Boys style melodies via the on-point title track. The Tennant/Lowe influenced is explored further on the superb "Ceephab" - think electro/acid/saucer-eyed synth-pop fusion - while "No Cube" is an undulating, 115 BPM acid wriggler (albeit with some spine-tingling piano motifs). To round things off, the German/Italian twosome drops a fine chunk of warehouse-friendly, mid-tempo new beat/proto-rave fusion. In other words, it's analogue-rich business as usual.

Onda
Metallo Nero - (7:07) 56 BPM
Hundred Fingers Man - (7:08) 100 BPM
Onda - (6:26) 60 BPM
Gabula - (5:49) 58 BPM Hot
Review: Much praise was heaped on the 2015 debut EP from Black Spuma, a "retro Balearic" collaboration between prolific Frankfurt producer Phil Lauer and Slow Motion man Fabrizio Mammarella. Unsurprisingly, Onda is similarly inclined; check, for example, the synthesized marimba melodies, dreamy pads and Sueno Latino-era Italian deep house groove of "Metallo Nero", or the gentle Adriatic breeze that is "Hundred Fingers Man". The superb title track sees them upping the tempo and intensity a little whilst retaining their core values (melody, groove, and eyes-closed vibes), while closer "Gabula" sees them change tack, lacing rubbery TB-303 acid lines over a swinging breakbeat and whizzing electronic effects.

We Start Over
We Start Over - (6:23) 117 BPM
We Start Over (Apiento And Lx remix) - (8:20) 110 BPM Hot
We Start Over (Tuff City Kids Private Acid mix) - (6:57) 117 BPM
We Start Over (Tuff City Kids Garage dub) - (6:44) 117 BPM
Review: First up, you really need to check the original version of "We Start Over" from Fila Brazilia man Steve Cobby, it's a wonderful piece of music that really highlights Trudie Dawn Smith's beautiful vocals. Here Gerd Janson and Phil Lauer go to town on the track twice under their Tuff City Kids alias, offering up a pair of diverse remixes that are aimed for the club spaces. The Private Acid remix lives up to its name with the German pair treating that vocal to some excellent looping tactics whilst the Garage Dub sees them call on the spirit of classic New York house. Complementing this, while Testpressing type Apiento teams up with Lexx for a remix that ups the chug factor markedly.

Deja Vu
Deja Vu - (5:55) 111 BPM
Freefalling - (6:10) 111 BPM Hot
Review: Mark Barrott's International Feel label seems to be going from strength to strength. Certainly, this debut single from previously unknown combo Private Agenda - a trio known only as Martin, Sean and Nick - is amongst the label's strongest releases to date. "Deja vu", in particular, is superb, with snaking synth lines and an early George Michael style vocal reclining over dreamy chords, electrofunk synths and a breezy, mid '80s Balearic pop groove. Virtual flipside "Freefalling" is similarly impressive, with twittering bird noises, enveloping pads and slack-jawed vocals rubbing shoulders with sun-kissed melodies and shuffling electronic percussion. In truth, both tracks sound like the sort of thing Alfredo would have championed back in 1986 - high praise for those who sway, eyes closed and smiling, to the Balearic beat.

Review: Everyone loves a good story behind a record and few come with a more interesting narrative than this debut (and perhaps only) Talamanca System 12". The story goes that Gerd Janson and Phil Lauer were enjoying the Ibizan hospitality of International Feel boss Mark Barrot last summer, to the extent they were both gifted his unused Studio Electronics 'Boomstar 303' synth. Eager to repay such a lavish favour, Janson offered to remix a track Barrot was working on, an offer which eventually resulted in this 12". Four versions of "Balanzat" feature here, with an original, acid reflux, Tuff City Kids refix and ambient reprise to choose from. If this is the only Talamanca System record we will see it's a shame as it's a mighty fine addition to the International Feel discography.
