Distant
Distant - (6:22) 128 BPM Hot
Spinner - (4:05) 83 BPM
Review: Following his collaboration with RBBTS last year, Noir returns to his own label with this solo release. As one of the most consistent house and techno producers of the past two decades, it comes as no surprise that Distant is a melodic, atmospheric affair. The title track resounds to dramatic synths and epic builds, unfolding over staccato drums and steely percussion. "Spinner" is a different proposition. Eschewing the dance floor, it builds slowly and gradually. Moving from an intro of dreamy tones, Noir adds in humming bass pulses and breathy pads. It underlines again Noir's talent when it comes to composing emotive electronic music.

Review: Techno never dies. Noir Music, a label littered in the glitz of artists like Dusty Kid, Thomas Schumacher, Butch and Reset Robot, sends in the drones for this Resolute compilation. Banging big room dub techno from Industrialyzer, minimal dusty grooves and spatial atmospheres from Nicolas Bougaieff and some harsh tribal touches from Juan Trujillo. Electric Rescue too turns in a refined take of loopy industrial minimal with the compilation at large a sure fire hit for techno fans, especially those into the early mechanical Detroit stuff, harder UK industrial styles, moody Basic Channel beats and heavier warehouse sessions.

Embody Paradox
Embody - (7:46) 128 BPM Hot
Paradox - (6:48) 128 BPM
Played by: Thomas Schumacher
Review: Few producers do underground electronic music like Thomas Schumacher. Following on from his Natural Rhythm series on Noir last year, the veteran German artist returns to the label to deliver another unique EP. Central to Schumacher's sound are his deadly, slamming rhythms, examples of which are prevalent here. On "Paradox", this signature manifests in the form of a peak-time affair that plays host to a murky bass, eerie synths and rolling snares. It's a dramatic, relentless affair. On "Embody", there is a similar aesthetic audible - the only difference is the spooky vocal that is woven in and out of the arcing acid lines and layered siren riffs.

Disruptions
Eruption - (7:13) 128 BPM Hot
Disruption - (7:24) 130 BPM
Review: Noir aka Ren? Kristensen took a year off from releasing music because, in his own words, he wanted 'time to breathe, to think and most importantly time to be creative and to experiment.' On this, his come back single, it sounds like he benefited from the break. The aptly-named "Eruption" explodes from the speakers with noisy, grizzly bass, rolling snares and hammering kicks. Just as the listener is getting used to this onslaught, Kristensen then drops an ice-cold, mesmerising synth riff. The title track is more pacey, with Noir using blustering filters, doubled up beats and medieval chants, but the arrangement isn't as intense as "Eruption". Still, it sounds like the year off did him a lot of good.

Touch - (6:14) 123 BPM
Blackplant - (6:52) 121 BPM Hot
Daze - (5:46) 122 BPM
Review: At just 24, German producer and DJ Kevin Over is already established as a go-to producer for ready made house and techno winners. Detroit legend Stacey Pullen licensed his killer "2002" for his Balance 028 compilation, while Etienne de Crecy, Waze & Odyssey, Andhim and Pirupa have all included his music in their Essential Mixes. For another hot release on Noir's Danish imprint, we have the seething dub techno of "Jus A" complimented by some rap vocal samples astop: actually works well! Followed by the smooth late night sleaze of "Touch" which is slinky tech house just the way we like it! The brooding dancefloor drama of "Blackplant" is packed full of suspense and will appeal to fans of the Life & Death sound, but he soon gets back to the program on the funky and rolling party starter "Daze" which will rock the The White Isle crowd and mix well with your Material or Saved tracks.

Haunter - (7:57) 122 BPM
Go Ahead - (6:31) 123 BPM
Review: Old hands Tapesh and Maxmiljan join forces once again, this time for a six-track EP of warming deep house sounds. Opener "Be Down" laces a classic Status IV boogie vocal over a deep but jaunty backing, while "When We Were Young" fixes classic late night riffs and vocal samples to energetic, boompty-ish beats. "Do It Again" is a little reminiscent of classic darkroom garage given a 2012 makeover, while "Stole My Love" can't decide if it's a hypnotic, late night shuffler or sweaty, arms-raised raver. "Haunter" is similarly confused, but makes a better fist of it by again pinching a classic electrofunk-era vocal and whacking it over some formidable drums. "Go Ahead", meanwhile, is the tightest and most well thought-out track of the lot.

Review: This EP from the previously little known Habischman is jam-packed, so we'll leave the niceties and crack straight on. The title track is a curious concoction, all space pop synths, folksy vocals and vintage synth-pop chug. It might not grab you on the first listen, but give it a few spins and you'll soon be hooked (even if the vocal sounds like it's not been produced properly). Bonus cut "Closer" offers a more straight-up nu-disco flex with deep house nous, guaranteeing floor-filling capabilities. There's a bulging remix package, too, with Martin Dawson's bleep-heavy atmospheric deep house rub and Douglas Greed's bleep techno-goes-pop excursion most impressing.

Review: Montreal-based, Philadelphia-raised Hollis P Monroe is something of a deep house veteran, boasting a career that stretches back to the 1990s. His particular strength is soulful, atmospheric house. In previous years, that would have meant Defected-ish funkiness. These days, it means shuffling, melancholic groovery, twisted P-funk synths and deep atmospherics. "If You Have A Doubt" is his strongest for some time, and benefits greatly from a perfectly judged vocal from Overnite. The remix package is very strong, too. Mario Basanov provides a chiming, bittersweet European deep house take, while Argy delivers two chunky big room versions full of spiraling melodies and booming basslines.

Review: The fourth volume of Noir Music's solid Second Chances & New Romances series offers up more bright-eyed, bushy-tailed deep house for contemporary dancefloors. There are seven cuts to choose from, starting with Larse's nu-disco-tinged, Julio Bashmore-inspired "Those Of You". Finnebassen delivers two squidgy, eyes-wide-shut groovers, with the R&B-sampling "Touching You" being the obvious pick. Elsewhere, Timos cracks out the alien melodies and analogue basslines of "One of a Kind", whilst Hector Cuoto mixes wobbly bass and shuffling beats with Adonis samples on confirmed basement bumper "Lost Keys". As usual, all the material is likely to put a smile on the face of all but the most forthright miserablists.

Review: Joining us in doffing our caps to Danish DJ/producer Noir, whose enduring label celebrates five years in the only way it knows how - with a compilation highlighting the imprint's delicious back catalogue. 5 Years Of Noir Music showcases some of the finest slices of deep, minimal house music that positively drips with emotion; check the uplifting Nicolas Masseyeff remix of Hot Since 82's "Let I Ride", and Manuel Tur's killer refix of Larse's deep soul jam "So Long" for just two examples, but in all honesty picking out highlights is an exercise in futility as the entire package is just so strong.

Review: Danish DJ/producer Noir's self-titled label has been surprisingly prolific over recent times. So prolific, in fact, that this latest label 'best of' features a whopping 20 tracks, each of which originally came out in the last 18 months. Those who've followed the label will know what to expect - comfy, melodic deep house, springy electronic house and the occasional fuzzy tech-house groover. With tracks and remixes from Kruse & Nuremburg, Tiger Striples, Solomon, Ron Carroll, Trickski and Dan Ishu (whose "Nu Luv" re-invents Frankie Knuckles' "Your Love" as a synth-house banger), there's plenty of high grade house music to enjoy.

Review: Berlin-based vocalist and producer Davis had reached the cusp of dance music's mainstream with his artist albums on Punkt and Kitty-Yo, but this collaboration with Noir should give him the push he needed. The vocals sound more robust and darker than his sometime frail outpourings and are reminiscent of Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan at his most pensive; coupled with Noir's pulsing bass, lyrics like 'we're scared of being found out' pushes Davis into a darker but ultimately more accessible place. The duo haven't forgotten the dance floor and the club version sees them maintain their underground credibility with a glitchy, acidic reshape.

Lucky Star (Kolombo Smooth remix) - (6:12) 111 BPM
Lucky Star (Kolombo 303 dub) - (5:43) 120 BPM
Review: This is one of those records that just won't die. Originally released in 1999, "Lucky Star" has been remixed and re-released on numerous occasions since. This latest reissue notably features a decidedly touchy-feely rework from German deep houser Solomun. Given the original's funky house credentials, it's rather nice to hear a version that brings out the soulfulness of Ron Carroll's vocal without going overly "big". Hot Since 82 also provide a solid remix - this time layering up the drums over a languid synth bass groove - while there are two slick versions from Kolombo. Of these, it's the acid-flecked simplicity of the 3030 Dub that really stands out.

Review: Previous volumes of Noir Music's ongoing Second Chances & New Romances series have offered something akin to a 60-minute hug - smart, sassy and well-polished deep house with just the right amount of grit and effortless old skool flavour. This third volume continues that trend, wrapping listeners in a silk-lined duvet with only a steaming hot toddy for company. Ben Disho offers a "Your Love" inspired chunk of soupy goodness, Tiger Stripes gets all Balearic, Blond:ish employs a killer breakdown and Larse gently rubs your delicate parts with a gorgeous, synth-laden smooth groove. In a word: silky.

Shape Your Life (Fusty Delights remix) - (5:54) 140 BPM
Review: If Kompakt-style emotive techno is your thing, then you'd be well advised to check out Shape Your Life. The original version boasts a stripped back rhythm with delightful toy town melodies and an androgynous vocal that sounds like Fischerspooner jamming with Michel Mayer. The remixes are more dancefloor friendly; the Fusty Delights take features tight drums and a niggling bassline and the Downtown Party version focuses on low-slung rhythms and the kind of 'oohs' and 'aahs' that LCD Soundsystem specialised in. Finally, Daniel Bortz gives the techno DJs something to play with, impressing with the dubby beats and ominous riffs of his heavier take.

Review: There's not much previous work to judge Larse's new EP against, but on the whole the Nightshift EP tells of a producer with a knack for putting together deep house tracks with genuine quirk. All three tracks work perfectly well, with the smoky funk of last track "Jus Keep Rockin" standing out to our ears.

Review: Lovely little compilation here from Noir Music, with the pleasingly titled Second Chances & New Romances. Opening with the distant, plaintive vocals and horizontal bumpin' groove of "I Found You" by Tiger Stripes, the six track selection serves as a wonderful sampler for the imprint's established signature sound. The sultry, understated emotion of Eivissa's edit of Larse's "The More I Want" is probably the highlight, but it's a tough call because everything on here is so damn playable.

Review: Faced with a deluge of ultra-serious industrial techno, Noir & Haze have pushed in the opposite direction. "Around" is a spacey but catchy arrangement, its billowing chords sweeping along the melancholic vocals. Solomun from Diynamic provides two top-quality remixes which turn the original into a dubby groove laced with trancey riffs, while the extended instrumental version is more techno-centric, glistening with shiny synth solos. However, it's the acoustic version of "Around" that will win mainstream support. The vocals are transformed into the campest falsetto this side of the Vatican's Eunuch Choir and the string-led, organic groove is nothing short of seductive.
