Keep On Searching For Love
Review: An exceptional EP showcasing rare South London British jazz funk, originally unveiled in the UK in 1984 by Tony Williams, a Jamaican-born producer renowned for his influential work on Funk Masters' jazz-funk classic, 'Love Money'. Resurfacing once more, 'Keep On Searching For Love' epitomizes the distinctive dub disco sound of 80s London, meticulously crafted with every element tailored to captivate disco enthusiasts. Featuring gated snares and captivating vocal performances by Linda Taylor, this track radiates with the brilliance of a supernova. Checking Out
Review: This rare groove hails from South London's 1984 scene. Produced by Jamaican-born Tony Williams, the mastermind behind the classic Funk Masters' "Love Money," "Checking Out" stands as a unique single. The track blends the soulful energy of MFSB's "Mysteries of the World" with a distinct British twist, capturing the essence of Brit-funk. A cool, instrumental flip-side completes the package. Originally released on the small Tai Wan label, "Checking Out" has stood the test of time. This fully remastered version, sourced from the original tapes, brings this essential Brit-funk gem back to life with a meticulously recreated label design.

Soul Jazz Records Presents: COLD WAVE #1
Various
Review: Soul Jazz looks to the contemporary when applying their strong archival sense to a new compilation series. A first of two various artist releases, Soul Jazz's Cold Wave draws upon a current pool of electronic artists who consider themselves largely indebted to the cold wave of late-70s and early '80s Europe. Taking in French acts like Krikor and VQOA to splays of lo-fi industrial punk by Gammut and De Ambassade, Detroit's FIT Siegel drops in with a synth driven drum track that nestles up nicely next to Dissembleance's "Capture". With Patrick Cowley and Laurie Anderson to Suicide, Underground Resistance and emergent-genres like new beat all cited as influences, and more besides, Kriedler's "Kannibal" and Celine Gillain's almighty "Fight Or Flight" keep the fires burning.

Soul Jazz Records Presents Venezuela 70/Cosmic Visions Of A Latin American Earth/Venezuelan Experimental Rock In The 1970s
Various
Review: A snapshot of South America's most northern country's richest period - when oil money was rife and the arts were being invested in - Soul Jazz have dug deep to uncover an whole body of work that's remained largely unheard outside of the country. Jazzy, progressive, funky and soulful approaches all tied up with cosmic studio haze and blazed with Latin heat we float from the organic, big band swing of Aldemaro Romero to the electronic boogie groove and slide guitars of Ofrenda Vytas Brenner and back again via pure prog sci-fi of Angel Rada and beyond. A one-of-a-kind collection

Soul Jazz Records Presents Africans With Mainframes
Review:  Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, returns this time under the alias Africans with Mainframes. With fellow Chicagoan Noleian Reusse they have been releasing music under the name Africans with Mainframes for over 15 years now. The KMT LP is the debut album from the group, a collage of apocalyptic Chicago acid meets industrial and transcendental post-house machine funk. Both intense and unique, the album of forward-thinking, experimental, boundary-pushing Afro-futurist electronic music shows why Hieroglyphic Being is regarded as one of the most serious purveyors of experimental electronic music today.

Soul Jazz Records Presents PUNK 45/Chaos In The City Of Angels And Devils/Hollywood From X To Zero/Hardcore On The Beaches/Punk In Los Angeles 1977-81
Various
Review: Another offering in the uniformly excellent Soul Jazz Records compilation series, this collection of 22 all-killer punk gems chronicles an era in which disaffected youth and energetic misfits alike railed against the sun-drenched blandness of the Californian city they inhabited. Running the gamut from the proto-punk mayhem of Iggy & The Stooges to the early hardcore of Circle Jerks and from the jokey outsider art of Black Randy & The Metrosquad to the comparatively sophisticated X, all bases are covered here in a thrilling document of middle-finger intensity and rulebook-ripping iconoclasm.

Soul Jazz Records Presents Disco 2 (A Further Fine Selection Of Independent Disco, Modern Soul & Boogie 1976-80)
Various
Review: Last year's Disco (A Fine Selection Of Independent Disco, Modern Soul & Boogie 1978-82) compilation from Soul Jazz offered undeniable proof that few diggers deserve their reputation as much as Dutch discotheque scholar Disco Patrick. Given the reception, it's no surprise to see that the London label have commissioned Patrick to undertake a second assessment of the genre's lesser known gems with the focus here on the years 1976-80. The first of two double LP vinyl samplers to accompany the full CD release finds Pat pulling out gems like the extremely pricey Skip Jackson curio "Micro Wave Boogie" and T.K. Disco treat "Cosmic Funk" by Mad Dog Fire Department. Any current disco spinners will savour Patrick's efforts here.

Soul Jazz Records Presents Inner City Beat: Detective Themes, Spy Music and Imaginary Thrillers
Various
Review: When we think of classic cop and spy shows from the golden age of the '60s and '70s, we automatically think of tough, no-nonsense heavy drinking guys, foxy gals in negligees, vintage cars and of course killer, out-there incidental music. Here the ever-brilliant Soul Jazz present a lovingly compiled selection of gems from the anonymous vaults of library music that would have been supplied to all kinds of shows and films back in the day. Now they get to live again, and with their lush orchestration, jazzy drums, meandering funky basslines and wah-wah guitar, thrilling they are too.

Lone Raver EP
Review: Having recently collaborated with Kieran Hebden, pricked the ears of Gilles Peterson and opened for Radiohead in New York, experimental electronic jazz outfit Rocketnumbernine are not short of high profile fans. Here brothers Ben and Tom Page bring their trademark brand of moody jazz futurism to Soul Jazz for a rare three-track single. All three tracks are typical of their live sound, which adds hypnotic, often intense vintage synth sounds to loose jazz percussion reminiscent of Fridge or Four Tet. Of the three tracks, it's the cacophonous "Steel Drummer" that stands out, though the melancholic "Black & Blue" and upbeat "Lone Raver" aren't far behind.
