Shing A Ling Baby
Review: We can't tell you much about Donnie Sanders & The Don Juans except that 'Shing A Ling Baby' first came out on US label Afton in 1967 and is now getting reissued by German label Tramp, backed by the previously unreleased 'Naptown USA'. The title cut is the kind of dense, raw and sweaty deep funk groove you might hear in a Keb Darge set, with saxophone and squalling guitars doing most of the heavy lifting, while 'Naptown USA', a homage to the city of Indianapolis, has an even more vintage feel, with horns that could have come straight from the late 50s.

Step By Step
Review: Tobias Kirmayer's Tramp label specialise in reissuing long-lost funk, soul and jazz nuggets, and here they bring us two cuts from Matter Of Taste, a German funk and soul outfit who formed in Gemmrigheim, near Stuttgart, in the late 70s. 'Step By Step' itself is a classic-style funker with the female 'lead' and chanted male 'backing' vocals essentially swapping roles, with the overall effect vaguely reminiscent, in places, of Earth Wind & Fire's classic 'System Of Survival'. 'Haselief', on the other hand, is a sweeter, smoother ride that leans towards jazz-funk with its extended six-string runs and scatted fem vox.

Review: For a full 20 years, Tobias Kirmayer's Tramp label have been serving up a mix of reissues and fresh material spanning the worlds of funk, soul, jazz, Afrobeat and folk, with much of their output coming on ultra-limited seven-inch vinyl. Thankfully, though, much of it also gets gathered up on digital collections such as this latest offering, which brings together gems as diverse as The Echomen's 'Talk Is Cheap' (a cert for the Mod floors), Dianne Elliott's Dusty-esque 'The Ring', the soulful blues of Van Buren's 'Bronco Queen' from 1983 ,the wigged-out soul-jazz of Frederic Raboid Crew's 'Open House', Earl Turner's late 70s funk-meets-boogie jam 'S'Port City Rock', the brass-tastic jazz of New Lucky Seven's 'Woodhead' and, last but not least, a couple of doses of Afrobeat courtesy of contemporary torch-bearers The KutiMangoes.
