Founded in Brighton in 1999 by Robert Luis and Paul Jonas, the label Tru Thoughts doesn’t need any introduction now. The label has put out numerous albums and EPs, across genres from electronic, funk, soul and hip hop to jazz, tropical, grime and more. While Bonobo’s debut album, ‘Animal Magic’ marked the first album in 2000 under the label, the list of artists who released under Tru Thoughts is full of great names with the likes of Quantic, Nostalgia 77, Alice Russell and TM Juke but also Maddslinky aka Zed Bias, Flowdan, Titeknots, Hint, Zero dB, Omar and many more. Tru Thoughts is not just a label but also has a publishing company called Full Thought Publishing, organizes many club nights between Brighton and London, and broadcasts on several radio stations.
Review: Marking a year since their evergreen soul album Flames & Figures, Bay Area fusioneers The Seshen revisit the title track with an unreleased instrumental and much needed acapalla that allows us to focus wholly on Lain St Juste's stirring vocals and evocative lyrics. Still as smoky and alluring and otherworldly as it was when it blew our heads off last year, it's now been re-envisioned by rising beat-splicer Naytronix for added cosmic pleasure. Go (flame and) figure.
Review: Hailing from San Francisco's Bay Area, The Seshen, are set to expand on their cult status with this, Flames & Figure, their much anticipated sophomore long player. Combining synthesizers, drum machines, live percussion and a deep soulfulness the band are complimented by star-in-the making frontwoman Lalin St. Juste's lyrical stream of consciousness. Featuring 13 tracks, the record is a grower that will attract an even bigger audience with the iconic video for the eponymous future-soul title track. So then, Flames & Figures, a significant step forward for a significant band.
Review: The Seshen are an outfit that hail from San Francisco, but are destined for worldwide adulation. Having built up a large following online and through supporting the likes of tUnE-yArDs and Hiatus Kaiyote, the industry came knocking on their door with the genuine soulful vibes of Tru Thoughts winning out. The Unravel EP is the first fruits of this new partnership and it's pretty impressive stuff. There's six tracks in all taking us on a sensual journey of evocative live electronic soul-wave including the shoegazey grind of "Unravel", glistening audio confection "Oblivion" and the warped synthpop of "The Fall.
