Review: The mighty Vision step forth with another humungous Mission VA collection, once again shining the brightest spotlight on some of the most exciting corners of bass music across the globe. Reading like a who's who in innovative production, the collection ranges from utter gutter-chomping filth from the likes of S Murk and Monuman to hurricane sonics by the likes of Current Value and Forbidden Society. Special moments can be found on each and every twist and turn the collection takes from UFO and Bro Safari's brand new project ET Finger to the new technoid inspired alias of Hybris - Pruvan. Absolutely sublime; here's to more future Missions.

Review: Drum & bass from a techno perspective; Current Value's 14th album (yes 14!!) flips the switch and turns things inside out once again. Stark and, at points, highly abstract, the album takes a deeper route than previous CV LPs such as The All Attracting and Puer but still absolutely hammers and annihilates when it needs to... The anti-capitalist marching jam 'GREED' is a stomping, surging slice of pulsating tech tackle, the title track 'Platinum Scatter' and 'Eternal Recurrence' are rifle-like showers of euphoric bullets while 'TNM' is take the new 4x4 style of D&B to some stern and unforgiving places. These are just a small handful of highlights on yet another thoughtful and well considered concept LP from one of drum & bass music's most unique individuals.

Lady Petrol
Lady Petrol - (5:09) 175 BPM
Countdown (feat Serum) - (4:06) 175 BPM Hot
Flirt (feat Current Value) - (4:07) 175 BPM
Simmer (feat Carasel) - (4:01) 178 BPM
Review: Souped Up are always innovating around their tried and tested formula, and this EP is from a young artist the team have been pushing hard: Mozey. He's got four tracks here and all of them are wonderful balances of funky, synth-wave patterns and jagged dancefloor destruction, with Serum, Carasel and Current Value injecting that little extra into the mix. 'Simmer' with Carasel is a proper stomper, with a stepping percussive structure beneath a call-and-response format of shuddering stabs and shimmering, shivering synthetic screams. We love the bright, analogue funk on the introduction to 'Flirt', which creates an atmosphere of approachability far removed from its bassline's tendency towards spasmodic barks and gruff shouts. 'Lady Petrol' is a straight jump-up banger, and its position as the title tracks gives away the mission here: dancefloor pressure. Oh yes.

Review: Oh gosh! Current Value hits us hard with his 11th studio album 'Puer'. Released on Serum's Souped Up, it's a no-holds-barred exploration of the jumpier side to his far-reaching range. Big basslines, wily funk, zero-effs-given rave music, it's the German producer at his most playful. Highlights such as the sizzling harmonics of "Contemplate", the deep drones and savage kicks of "Chariot", the rising grainy riff and KO fills of "Pitting" and the reunion with man-of-the-moment Bou on "Running Your Mouth" are just some of the tracks that will melt your skin right down to your bones. And if that's not enough, he's about to drop album 12 on Methlab too. No one's doing it like Current Value.

Remorse
Remorse - (4:23) 177 BPM
Review: Current Value's relationship with the Souped Up crew has become one of the best subgenre cross overs in recent times, with his glitchy Neurofunk sound transitioning perfectly over into Serum's drawn-out, jump-up infused tones. 'Remorse' features Coppa on vocals and it's a naughty, rolling number with a tight sub bass and a general atmosphere of aggressive hedonism and dancefloor orientated funk. Good stuff.

Portal Breach/No Halfsteppin'
Portal Breach (feat ABIS) - (4:36) 172 BPM
No Halfsteppin' - (4:27) 177 BPM Hot
Review: Have you been portal breaching again? We can tell when you've been portal breaching... Your clothes are torn, your face is muddy and there's a strange smell of industrial machinery about you. You know it. We know it. Current Value knows it, and this is how he and major portal-purveyors Let It Roll feel... Dark, turbine-like, loaded with a full baroque choir and every bit as energetic and urgent as you'd expect. "No Halfsteppin'" is equally riled with your behaviour. It might not feel like it with that soothing soulful opener but when the drop plugs into a power source that exceeds the standard 1.21 gigawatts needed to portal breach you'll feel like your skin is melting. Immense. Just like Let It Roll, just like everything CV is doing right now. Once more to the breach our friends...

Review: C4C Recordings are celebrating 20 years soon and this album is their celebration: a mammoth 40 tunes of hard-hitting neuro goodness to warm your bones and rattle your face holes. The list of producers present on this album is pretty exhaustive and, perhaps some high-profile exceptions aside, every single neurofunk producer you could want is here. Dub Elements land on their feet with the exceptional 'Beasts Abode', a slightly less frantic but equally venomous tune compared with lots of other offerings. Other highlights come from ChaseR, Current Value and Agressor Bunx and the whole album is special - go check it.

City Syndrome - (4:45) 177 BPM Hot
Of Truth - (5:36) 177 BPM
Relinquish - (3:15) 177 BPM
Sluv - (4:48) 177 BPM
Played by: Serum
Review: Current Value on Serum's Souped Up... Even as recently as a year ago this would have seemed like an odd partnership but right now it feels just right. CV brings dynamics and textures like few others can but much more importantly he understands the funk and groove and when to hold back, too. As a result each of these four tracks is an absolute keeper; "City Syndrome" sparkles with strange spatial textures before flipping into a guttural grainy riff, "Of Truth" hits with a classic old school emotional synth intro before flipping into a growling metallic bassline. "Relinquish" takes us to much darker pastures with a grizzly rolling bassline with "Sluv" ends with foundation tones so rich and evocative but an energy and aesthetic so futuristic and crisp, it's like being in a rave in 1990 but dancing in trainers made in 2090.

Review: All roads lead to Rampage; one of Europe's biggest bass tickets this season, this year they're celebrating their massive rave with an album featuring some of the best names on the line-up. Once again all bass bases are covered on this second sampler; Maduk adds a little pace to Flux Pavilion's euphoric vocal uplifter "Pull The Trigger", Current Value gets unruly with his heads-down fast lane shock-out "Cyclic" while Upgrade dons his black belt and chops our souls, legs and appendages in half with his grotty choppy stabs. Game over mate.

Review: Rewind to 2000: Tim Eliot delivers his third album In A Far Future and he wasn't being sassy with the title. Still sounding experimental, innovative and ahead of the curve today, every track still has complete resonance with what's happening to this day. "Circular Moduls" jitters spasmodically like a Phizzy B-side, "Macromechanism" foretold the bleak terrain that Shackelton would conquer years later while "Acid Generator" would still smash either tech or jump-up floors such its absurdity and funk. Almost 18 years later, and reissued just weeks ahead of his forthcoming album on Invisible, this still sounds future as hell.

Review: Doc Scott continues to invite new friends to the fold with another surprise appearance from an artist you might not immediately associate with 31. Following the likes of Serum and J:Kenzo comes German production giant/neuro don Current Value with four supreme workouts; "Bigger Picture" opens with big breezes before dropping into an itchy, scratchy sandpaper funk bass riff, "Major Fracture" has a hook so sharp it could rip holes in the time space continuum, "Reconsider" is all about the latent groove in the rattling percussion while the title track arrests all attention with its unabashed ode to sci-fi. Crucial.

Current Value - "Grip" - (4:29) 174 BPM
Review: Few producers enjoy the exalted position that Current Value does. And since he's moved back from his hectic crossbreed creations to more traditional tech drum & bass sounds, you can really hear the detail in every element. Xtrah is a man of similar frequency obsession, making this Cyberfunk release a really natural and honest project. Highlights include the cymbal-splashing twist on the triplet arrangement ("Escape") and the insane blocky snare funk on the total sci-fi freak out "Matchfit". With all other tech territories explored in between, one could easily argue this to be Cyberfunk's best release so far.

Played by: Rich Raw
Review: It's remix o'clock at Dutty Audio Towers as label bossman passes on the parts to a wide range of scene talents: Klute takes the lead with an iced out twist on "Be Yourself" as he manipulates the vocal loop in a different direction. Current Value follows with yet more of his seemingly unstoppable tech science as a wasp nest bassline rattles in 23rd century style. Newcomers Hanzo & Randie bring up the rear with a heads-down neuro take on "Infection" where full emphasis is placed on the sci-fi bass textures. Finally Gydra gets all mechanical and pneumatic on "Inception", giving the original's iconic riff a Blackout style jump-up sense of turbo-charged energy. Feel the burns.

Review: Noisia's label for experimental, low freq sounds pushes its recruitment drive with this, a staggeringly good four-parter featuring some of the most sought-after names in dark and heavy beats. Kicking off with Lockjaw's methodically heavy "Obsidian", the producer takes his production into brooding territory while remaining technically astute. (Check his Tumblr too, man's a decent production blogger). Subtention's "Midnight Flush" ticks and shuffles its way through footwork-inspired beats, playing nastily with minimal, deadly bass. "Cotton Punch" comes next from the ever challenging Current Value and this is no exception - get ready to be pushed - while Berlin-based newcomer Survey offers up deep, minimal subs and rolling percussion for the perfect bleak, underground vibe. Top release.

Review: Critical's Binary series gets cracking for a fresh new outlook in 2015. Opening the year with Berlin's Current Value, this is four tracks of techno-infused sonic assaults that have been making an impact in every club brave enough to venture this far into the depths of inky-dark drum and bass over the past few months. "Division" in particular has been hitting the scene hard with its relentless percussion and stressed pads. Often 'experimental' is used as a cop-out description, but in this case it's true, and Current Value has been experimenting with just how tweaked he's willing to go.

Gear Up - (4:41) 140 BPM Hot
Review: Variety is the name of the game as Berlin's Tim Eliot unleashes a quad of uncompromising bass compositions. It all kicks off with "So Loud", a glittering, wafty, dreamer of groove with warm kicks and psychedelic twists. Things get much darker from here on: "Experiment" is a crunchy, industrial halfstepper while "Go Offline" is fractured and more fearless again, sounding akin to an alien invasion circa Hollywood late 60s. "Gear Up" ends us on a more of a classic metallic stabby bass style. Loud, gritty and nasty: just how we like it.

Review: A tremendous effort here from some sterling artists who traverse the boundaries of bass music, distorting sounds and manipulating frequencies to the extreme... behold the Subland EP Part 2. Kicking off with Current Value's low slung snorting cut "The Impact", it's all stuttering drums and whirring SFX a-plenty here in a decidedly bleak soundscape. Loop Stepwalker ups the ante in his searing dubstep riddim "Immortal Feelings" which juxtaposes a sparse, contemplative intro with tearing main part. Dean Rodwell's "In Rain" follows with enormous belches and bass bellows, before his follow up collab with Species "Home" which ends the EP.

Review: Mad, bad and dangerous, legendary techstep German D&B-ster Tim Eliot, aka Current Value comes to the fore for part one of Guerilla Files Vol 1. Gird your loins as he goes in hard with the ferocity of a bull in a china shop - we're talking lacerating breaks, breathtaking tempos, pummelling drums and relentless and unforgiving energy in "Therapist", and much the same in flipside gem "Overclock". Gein then takes the reins for another supersonic venture into skullstep debauchery with techno informed beats, punching drums and merciless b-lines in abundance. Not one for the faint hearted.
