Review: In 2003, amid a shifting landscape of closing record stores and evolving electronic music genres, Phonica Records emerged as a haven for dance and electronic music enthusiasts. Founded by Simon Rigg, Tom Relleen, and Heidi Van Den Amstel with backing from The Vinyl Factory - Phonica aimed to be a welcoming hub for all genres. Starting quietly, the shop gradually gained a strong reputation, fueled by the founders' ties to Koobla Records. Phonica thrived in its early years by championing emerging genres like electro house and minimal-micro house from labels like Kompakt and Perlon. In 2007, the Phonica record label was born, evolving into a platform for both staff and emerging talents, featuring early releases by now-established artists such as Peggy Gou and Four Tet. In 2023, celebrating its 20th anniversary, Phonica showcases its journey with 20 Years Of Phonica - a compilation boasting 18 exclusive tracks from established and rising artists across the label's diverse musical spectrum. Review: Will Buck welcomes Eli Escobar to Off Track Recordings. Happily, the Brooklyn-based producer has brought with him his strongest full-length excursion since 2017's 'Shout' on Claassic. Unlike some of his more recent full-length excursions, which were (admittedly expertly executed) tributes to specific styles, 'The Beach Album' takes warmth and sun-splashed sonic colour as its unifying theme. You'll find fine club workouts aplenty - see the gorgeous, synth-heavy deep house shuffle of 'Daywun', the throbbing, Moroder-influenced electro-disco sleaze of 'C@n U F33l It', the mid-tempo dancefloor dreaminess of 'In My Bones' and the squelchy nu-disco of 'Down All Day' - alongside mix-tape style interludes, tactile downtempo jams and DJ Cam-esque trip-hop head-nodders.

Review: While Eli Escobar is a master at mixing up his output, his strongest releases tend to be those aimed fairly and squarely at peak-time dancefloors. He's on that tip here, first drawing inspiration from jacking Chicago house, old Dance Mania ghetto-house releases and far-sighted electro on 'Phreek' (where Amanda Blank's lead vocal catches the ear), before opting for a sweat-soaked warehouse party flex on early morning treat 'Touch, Want, Feel'. We're then treated to two takes on Steven Klavier hook-up 'Deep Down Inside': the dreamy, tactile and soulful nu-disco-meets-Balearic house flex of the full vocal original mix, and the synth sax-sporting Dub Mix. 'Body Free', a bleep-sporting NYC techno throb-job, completes a fine EP.

Review: Over the last couple of years, Eli Escobar has released all manner of musical treats, from instrumental hip-hop beat tapes to albums full of analogue rich, melody-driven synth jams. As fine as these surprise excursions were, it's his fully dancefloor-focused material that really gets the pulse racing. 'Still Searchin', his first EP of 2023, is full of proper peak-time material, from the jacking and deep dancefloor electro-funk of 'Do It Now' - crunchy and squelchy in equal measure - and the breathless, punk-funk-goes-deep house hustle of 'Slinky', to the classic NYC deep house flex of 'I Miss Someone' and the jacking-but-ghostly peak-time wonkiness of 'Grab N Go'.

Review: Second time around for the ninth volume in Papa Records' reliable Messages compilation strand, which first hit stores back in 2014. This edition has been expanded via the inclusion of two fresh exclusives from compiler Richard Earnshaw: his picturesque, sun-splashed, life-affirming 2022 revision of Jon Cutler's 'I'll Take You' and a pleasingly rich, soulful and piano-powered revision of he and Sebb Junior's 'Got Yo Lovin'. The rest of the collection remains as essential as it was eight years ago, with highlights of the deep and soulful house treats on offer including the chunky late-night wooziness of Earnshaw's hook-up with Eli Escobar, 'Sunday Morning', the jazzy and spiritual flex of Jimpster and Rich Medina's 'This Thing' and the low-slung, early morning bounce of 'Nina' by Eric Erickson.

Review: Eli Escobar's previous release was a dusty mixtape full of J Dilla-inspired hip-hop head-nodders, so it's nice to see him return to the dancefloor via a first EP for Phonica. Opener 'FindAWay2Day' is sunny and life-affirming, with the NYC producer adding smile-inducing chords, loved-up pads, sampled vocal snippets, disco guitar licks and eyes-closed sax sounds to a solid bass of shuffling house drums and boogie bass. 'Something Inside of Me is a tech-tinged chunk of hazy late-night deep house hypnotism, while 'Down All Day' is a rushing, ultra-bright chunk of piano-house retro-futurism and 'Daywun' is a contemporary deep house take on hip-house. Luscious stuff all told.

Review: Last autumn, Eli Escobar delivered a swathe of rather good single-track salvos. It's these that have been gathered together on Night Class, a five-track mini-album that showcases the increasing musical diversity of his dancefloor-focused sound. That much is proved by the first two tracks, where the bold, beautiful, vintage-sounding synths and throbbing bottom-end of 'Blue Magic' is followed by the glassy-eyed, nu disco-tinged piano house bliss of 'Give Love'. Escobar's increasing use of late 1970s and early '80s synth sounds continues on 'Night Class', while 'This Is Not Going To Be An Ambient Track' sits somewhere between revivalist Chicago jack and slow-burn deep house warmth. As for closing cut 'What You Said', it's pleasingly crunchy, foreboding and sweaty.

Review: Manhattan veteran Eli Escobar can usually be relied upon to deliver the goods, so we were naturally not that surprised to find that his latest single once again hits the spot. Lead cut "Body Muzik" sees him pay tribute to the electronic body music era of the 1980s, New York style. That means a thrusting, mind-altering mixture of Nitzer Ebb style bass, sweaty beats, spiralling electronic noises and short stabs that sound like they were inspired by NYC freestyle. "Tonight (Club Mix)" takes a different approach, with Escobar mixing up jazzy breaks, stomping house beats, jacking drum machine fills, restless New Jersey organ riffs, crystalline chords and savagely cut-up old school vocal samples. It's as ear-pleasing as it is effective.

Review: Keeping it simple is the name of the game on this latest from New York house wunderkind Escobar. It's a single-track affair, for starters - so none of those pesky remixes to worry about - while the track itself is a looping affair centred around a female "the rhythm, addicted to the rhythm" vocal that plays almost constantly, underpinned by a nagging synth riff that nods to classic-style Detroit techno. Various other vocal snips and ever-shifting drum patterns help to maintain the interest, but this is nevertheless an eyes-down, locked-in-the-groove kinda cut built to keep warmed-up floors moving through those peaktime hours.

Review: It would be fair to say that Eli Escobar's second album, Shout, is not a carefree affair. Inspired by his growing anger at American politics, it's a much more poignant and melancholic affair than his party-hearty debut album. As such, the 15-track set is arguably his strongest collection to date, with cuts such as "Nightmare Rag", the gospel influenced disco deep house cry for freedom "The People", twisted and intense "ANGR", blissfully slick and tactile "City Song" and superb "Going On?" - a kind of sorrowful deep house update of Marvin Gaye's most heartfelt work - proving that Escobar is a far more thoughtful and musically savvy producer than many incorrectly believed. There are plenty of groovy and quietly positive moments, too, fuelled by Escobar's belief that love may be the answer to America's mounting problems.

Review: Eli Escobar is turning into a one-man anthem machine. Since joining the Classic Music ranks a couple of years back, the New York producer has been responsible for a string of insatiable dancefloor hits. Predictably, "Handz Up" is another belter: a jaunty, piano-laden roller that smartly builds in intensity throughout. Escobar achieves this primarily through the layering and manipulation of impassioned gospel style vocal samples, bold piano riffs and occasional Church organ, though the stomping, handclap-heavy beat also plays a significant part. Chicagoan scalpel fiend Cratebug - better known for his killer re-edits - provides the obligatory remix, re-imagining the track as a sleazy chunk of head-cracking, mind-altering acid house/gospel house fusion. It's a filthy remix, all told, and offers a druggy alternative to Escobar's cheery original version.

Review: Eli Escobar is a staple of New York's electronic music scene and on his latest release, demonstrates why he is held in such high regard. That said, the title track shows that he is also expert in house music from Chicago. It starts with a stripped back drum pattern, followed by a reptitive vocal, hissings hats, insistent acid and doubled up claps. The unfussy production sound and straightforward approach to arranging harks back to the classic sound of Larry Heard and Adonis. On "Back 2 Luv", Escobar makes a stylistic return to NY. While the drums are solid, the combination of Steven Klavier's soulful vocals and celebratory piano keys make this house music of the most uplifting variety. The Jamie 3_26 Alright Ronnie version, with its disco influences closes out the release.

Review: There's something pleasingly old-fashioned about Happy Again, an album of alternative versions and remixes of tracks from Eli Escobar's acclaimed Happiness full-length. Thanks to the presence of DJ-friendly dubs, rhythm tracks and acappellas, it feels like Classic looked to the pioneering remix albums of the 1980s for inspiration. What really makes it stand out, though, is the quality of the material. Kon's rework of "Happiness (Part 2)" offers the perfect balance between subtle house and voodoo disco, while Soulphiction and Soul Clap steal the show with contrasting deep house takes on "Can't Stop Dancing" and "4 Luv". We're particularly impressed, too, with the freestyle-tinged revision of "Chaka Khan" by The Carry Nation, while Escobar's own dub of "Happiness (Part 2)" is a loose, warm and groovy treat.
