Review: Local Talk's celebration of the '90s house-inspired corners of its now vast catalogue continues, with the much admired Swedish stable serving up 12 tidy tracks from a mixture of rising stars and scene stalwarts. It begins with the tactile, sunrise-ready wonder of Sean McCabe's '6AM Dub' of his own superb 'It's My Life', and ends with the densely layered, loop-powered disco-house rush of Circulation's 'The Return (1997 Mix)'; in between, you'll find an array of highlights including Dirtytwo's 'Moody' (an on-point Mood II Swing tribute), the deep, Italo-house style colour of Willie Graff and Tuccillo's 'Sunday Morning', the vintage Kerri Chandler-esque bump of Tom Noir's 'Feel Me' and the rolling warmth of Art of Tones' 'Dirty Stories'.

Review: This EP sees Kastil's Soul Notes label inaugurate a new series of Various Artists releases, split evenly between those familiar to the label and a few names new to the imprint, with four tracks that complement each other perfectly. Local Talk's Fulbert kicks off with "Untitled", a hi-fidelity slice of 90s-inspired house with some pleasingly foggy, jazzy touches nestled amongst its sharp percussion, while label boss Kastil contributes "Red Clown (raw mix)", a stripped back house jam with wavering chords and clattering tin pot percussion. Malin Genie provides "Leavin'", an urgent piece of garage house breathy with breathy vocals and a pleasantly spacious quality, while Jefferson Belmodo finishes up with "Booty Groove" a devastatingly simple house track with lightly filtered bass.

Review: Given the runaway success of Mad Mats and Tooli's Local Talk imprint - one of the first labels to go all-out on the '90s garage revival tip - it was probably inevitable that a compilation would appear at some point. Talking House Volume One presents a pleasing selection of label favourites (HNNY's "For The Very First Time", Will Maddams' "Stand In For Love", Gerd's remix of Mateo & Matos' "Maw Basics") and lesser-known gems (Fulbert's brilliantly uplifting "First Time House", Dirtytwo's Mood II Swing tribute "Moody", Andreas Saag's jazzy, string-laden "Back To Life"), with the odd unheard cut thrown in. Taken in context, it's excellent, and touches on many more vintage house and garage strands, whilst remaining current, than many similar releases.

I Like It - (7:36) 123 BPM
Review: The title of this second release on the Local Talk label gives a hint as to what's to come. Lead cut "First Time House", in particular, evokes thoughts of riotous parties in sweaty New York basements circa 1992, when shirtless dancers would go crazy for the latest MK remixes. It uses organs, bumpin' basslines, beats, strings and vocal samples in a similar manner, making it a retro-futurist gem. "I Like It" treads a similar path, adding classic Detroit drum programming into a delicious New Jersey-New York mix. Sure, both tracks cover old ground, but they both sound great - to our ageing ears, at least!
