Review: Canadian DJ/producer Jayda G presents her debut album on UK institution Ninja Tune. The Berlin-based artist made the album in 2018, the same year she completed a Masters in Resource and Environmental Management. Of the album's theme, Jayda explained that she is trying to bring her two worlds together, bridging the communication gap and engaging people - as she feels it's her social responsibility to use a platform like this in a positive way. And while not entirely sure if people in the electronic music community want to talk about the environment, she certainly hopes that this will elicit some kind of conversation around the topic. The Significant Changes LP features 'a blend of vintage drum machine funk, drawing heavily on Chicago's house blueprint' and featuring vocals by a good friend and frequent collaborator: Calgary-based songstress Alexa Dash. She last joined Jayda on the terrific "Diva Bitch" on Freakout Cult last year - the label she runs with DJ Fett Burger.

Review: Given her status as a rising star of loved-up house music, it was probably inevitable that Ninja Tune would sign Jayda G. In March, the Canadian will release her debut album on Coldcut's long-serving label, "Significant Changes". Before that, we get this obligatory taster single featuring the vocals of regular collaborator Alexa Dash. This time round, Dash sounds like the classic house diva she's quickly becoming, confidently belting out thoughtful lyrics over a backing track that combines Jayda G's love of warm, live-sounding elements (bass and pianos, in particular) with tough but unfussy beats, chiming synthesizer melodies and just the right amount of off-kilter dancefloor swing. If this is anything to go by, the album is going to be rather special.
