Review: Kiril burst onto the scene a couple of years back and has been doing serious business ever since across a variety of labels, including Guidance, Critical and others. This single marks his debut on the seminal 31 Recordings and Doc Scott's supreme A&R ability is on full display across both tracks. Kiril tends to release precise, techy music but this time around he's coming at you with something altogether rougher and more ravey, as 'Hoover's Don't Judge, People Do' attests to, a classic sounding roller with goosebump-inducing synths and a lovely rave piano that splices up the industrial vibes with melodic intent. 'Untitled Dub' is the flip, a crunchy tune with fantastic drums that smack of Total Science, a similarity that continues as its bassline slowly builds into a ferociously stripped back offering. Top draw.

Review: Straight outta Toulouse! Vandal Records celebrate 15 years with this serious statement: 17 tracks of some of the most forefront, innovative and exciting drum & bass from an on-point selection of trusted lifers and the most exciting new-gen names in the game. Highlights can be found on pretty much every track but you'd be mad not to check Rizzle's evocative and eerie "Ether", Was A Be & Synth Ethics' high voltage "Roughmouth", Nymfo's tense groaner "Semantics" or the twisted techno-like stab-whirlwind "Semantics". And that's just the tip of this on-point D&B iceberg. Some anniversary albums celebrate the past; this celebrates Vandal's future.

Review: 2018 is the second year in a row that Critical Music dropped a surprise release for us on Christmas Day, 2017 seeing the Modified Sonics album full of VIPs and exclusive remixes. New Energy Vol.1, however, is a totally different deal and that's because it's 18 brand new, exclusive tunes from those deep inside the Critical camp and those just entering it. The whole roster is represented: Kasra, Enei, Mefjus, Emperor, Foreign Concept, The Upbeats - and so on. But, excitingly, there's new talent in the form of Bou, Synth Ethics, Simula, Kanine and more. Mefjus' remix of 'Projections' arguably takes the cake as the best tune on here - absolute murderation. This is Critical's statement of intent for 2019.

Review: Kiril is a relative newcomer to the world of spooky D&B, but he's rapidly becoming a stable hand. Two releases this year on the legendary Critical Music have proven that and an appearance now on Ulterior Motive's Guidance UK - the first outside artist they've ever released from - is simply the next chapter in an inexorable march in the right direction. Boxes is dark, simple, minimal, techy and all the rest of it. The title track itself is pummelling and unforgiving, a stream of energy consisting of futuristic groans, streaming bass notes and glitching synth stabs. 'Amarcord' is next level stuff and has one of the best second drops of 2018, a halftime switch up that'll make anyone's toes curl as it clicks with clinical precision back up into full speed D&B. 'Cubo' has a sensational, loping feel to the percussion that lends it a unique flavour, whilst 'Kotki' brings an old-school drum sound that rounds out the release in style. Shouts to Kiril for this one.
