Review: Dutch boogie masters Kraak & Smaak mark two whole decades in the game this year, and to celebrate the occasion, Jalapeno bring us this best-of selection culled from releases both on Jalapeno and on their own Boogie Angst imprint. Kraak & Smaak have always neatly walked the line between straight-up funk, disco and boogie on the one hand, and more pop-oriented productions on the other, and so it is here: the first half of the album is packed with 'new old' funk and soul gems like 'Danse Macabre' and 'I Don't Know', while the second half concentrates largely on the more commercial side of their oeuvre, not to mention their collaborations with a wide array of guest vocalists. Fans will have most of what's here already, of course, but it's a fitting tribute to an impressive career to date - long may it continue.

Review: We're full of respect for the team behind Jalapeno Records, who have now been offering up the finest in funk, soul, hip-hop, disco and breakbeat for 20 years. It's a landmark that calls for a celebration, and with this compilation they've certainly marked their anniversary in style. The 20-track set is full-to-bursting with party-starting heat, with vintage gems from the likes of Skeewiff, Ikon, Kraak & Smaak and Featurecast being joined by more recent highlights from current imprint heavyweights such as Smoove & Turrell and the Allergies. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the break-driven revivalist soul headiness of Aldo Vanucci's 'You're All Show', the summery positivity of Gizelle Smith's 'S.T.A.Y' and the rushing disco brilliance of Dimitri From Paris's essential edit of Izo Fitzroy's 'I Want Magic'.

Kraak & Smaak feat Keyhole
Review: The original version of "All I Want" is one of the lesser-known gems in Kraak & SMaak's epic back catalogue. The squelchy slab of revivalist electrofunk, which features a brilliant lead vocal from Keyhole, was first sent to DJs five years ago, but for whatever reason was only released earlier this year. Here the long-serving Dutch trio treat us to the essential (and previously unheard) extended mix, plus a trio of reworks from industry pals. Mason kicks things off with a vibrant and colourful take that re-casts the track as a delay-laden chunk of 1980s NYC freestyle, Xinobi opts for a bass-heavy deep nu-disco flex, and Ash Reynolds re-imagines it as a swinging chunk of lusciously sun-kissed deep house with warming boogie flourishes.

Review: Kraak & Smaak singles are rarely anything less than party-starting treats, and this latest outing is no different. It helps, of course, that Eli Escobar - a producer known for delivering colourful, disco-and-boogie flavoured house hits - is on remix duty. His version of "U R Freak" is arguably a little dreamier and more musically intricate than his singles on Classic, but still packs a punch thanks to bustling organ stabs, bongo-laden beats and some on-point synth bass. The rest of the EP is taken up by Mood's modern boogie-meets-deep house remixes of "Prescription". Eric Biddiness makes his presence felt on the vocal version, rapping and singing over a squidgy, synth-laden backing track that perfectly tiptoes the fine line between club-ready fare and radio-friendly cheeriness.

Review: Dutch boogie house champs Kraak & Smaak knocked it outta the park last year with their Juicy fruit long player. Now they're putting out remixes of these two album cuts. "Stumble" is a sadness-tinged piano lament with soft, happy-sad summer day vibes. The Fhin Flip version retains Parcel's soulful vocals but adds slow, tough beats and low end rumbles. Elsewhere Richard Dorfmeister appears and delivers a spectacular "Cinematic Way" version and Blue Motel turn in a dreamy stonewashed synth rework. "So Clear" meanwhile is hazy deep house (Imagine a stoned Gypsy Woman) that gets remixed in an off-kilter funk direction by Memem.

They've been at it since 2003 and their careers have gone from strength to strength; the bulk of their material devoted to this very imprint: Jalapeno out of Brighton UK that is also home to The Allergies, Skeewiff and Ian Britt. Review: Kraak & Smaak's recent album, Juicy Fruit, was packed with warm, loose and attractive blends of boogie, jazz-funk and soul-soaked disco. "Alone With You", a heartfelt stroll through soft-focus boogie pastures in the company of expressive vocalist Cleopold, was undoubtedly one of the highlights. Here it gets a deserved single release, accompanied by three new reworks. Purple Disco Machine steals the show with a version that deftly melds the Dutch outfit's original disco instrumentation to a tasty house groove and atmospheric nu-disco synths. Elsewhere, Knight One's rework is breezy and organic, whilst Loframes delivers a bouncy, radio-friendly house interpretation shot through with bold electronic motifs.
