Review: Dave Lee's annual 'Essentials' compilations consistently deliver on their promise by rounding up the Z Records' biggest dancefloor hits and overlooked gems from the previous 12 months. 2023's edition is, somewhat predictably, another must-have collection packed to the rafters with house and disco treats. There are plenty of genuine scene anthems present - see Dimitri From Paris's epic revision of Leonid and Friends' cover of Chicago's 'Street Player', Lee's stunning disco rework of Jamiroquai's 'Little L', and his epic AC Soul Symphony cut 'I Want To See You Dance' - as well as lesser-celebrated gems such as the disco-boogie shuffle of Dynasty's 'Still In Love', David Penn's driving rework of Raven Maize's 'The Real Life', and Grant Nelson's piano-powered revision of Lee and Omar's 'Starlight'.

Review: Based in sunny Los Angeles, Raquel Rodriguez is a Mexican-American soul/R&B singer who lists the likes of Prince, Chaka Khan and Michael Jackson as influences. 'Undone' first appeared on her 2021 long-player 'Sweet Side', and now along comes UK disco legend Dave Lee to give it a makeover for more house-oriented floors. It's a task he pulls off with considerable aplomb, of course - there's literally no one better for the job - but ultimately he's only polishing a diamond... the real magic here lies in Ms Rodriquez's smooth, jazzy vocal delivery. A summer anthem on the soulful floors - file under 'unmissable'.

Review: Undoubtedly the strongest selling point of Z Records' second set of "Dubstrumentals" (largely instrumental remixes to you and me) is the sheer number of previously unreleased mixes on offer. Sure, the quality of the disco and house cuts on show is uniformly excellent but it's unusual to get so many previously unheard treats in one place. There are some genuine gems, too, including a sparkling Hot Toddy nu-disco instrumental mix of Joey Negro's "Stomp Your Feet", an inspired Saison instrumental of Akabu & Linda Clifford's "Ride The Storm" that features two exquisite extended breakdowns, a must-have "Disco Blend Instrumental" of Joey Negro and Horse Meat Disco's "Candidate For Love", and a stellar, proto-house style dub of The APX's "Sweet Surrender".

Review: As the year comes to a close, labels are naturally offering up celebratory compilations showcasing their strongest releases of 2019. The latest comes from Midnight Riot, a prolific imprint that rarely fails to serve up the fieriest contemporary disco heat. As you'd expect, the 26-track selection includes a blend of superb original productions (the nu-disco soul warmth of Jack Tyson Charles' "Glory", Alton Edwards sweaty, synth-bass propelled boogie-house gem "I Just Wanna Spend Time With You", the swirling disco headiness of Arthur Baker's "Reachin' Out") and re-edits/reworks (Dr Packer's gospel boogie revision "The Power", C Da Afro's disco-funk slammer "Party Purpose" and the suitably celebratory "Boogie On Time" by Ladies On Mars). As you'd expect, the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout.

Review: This excellent collection from Z Records draws together some of boss man Joey Negro's favourite label cuts of 2019, many of which he of course had a hand in either producing or remixing. There are naturally tons of superb multi-track remixes of disco gems old and new (see the versions of the O'Jays, Delia Renee, Tamiko Jones and Double Exposure), as well as fresh revisions of vintage Joey Negro house productions under other aliases (Doug Willis, Z Factor, Foreal People) and a swathe of killer cuts that join the dots between disco and house (Sunkids and Chance, Four80 East and CeCe Peniston, Bobby D'Ambrosia and Michelle Weeks). Throw in tracks and remixes from the likes of Fouk, Crackazat and Lay-Far and you have a superb collection of peak-time-ready workouts.

Review: If you haven't been keeping up with UK disco/funk/boogie merchant Andy Williams AKA Yam Who?'s recent work then here's a chance to get up to speed, as Midnight Riot present the first volume in a two-part collection of his 2019 output. Despite the title, there's only one original production in this set, Jaegerossa collab 'This Man's In Love With You': the rest of the album comprises remixes for the likes of Michael Gray, Jaki Graham, Los Charly's Orchestra and Moussa Clarke, and suffice to say any cuts haven't yet been on heavy rotation at the likes of Horse Meat Disco and Glitterbox soon will be! Contemporary mirrorball vibes at their best.

Review: Raquel Rodriguez's "We Go Together" was first featured on the soul singer's self-released 2018 mini-album "The 310, Part 2". Z Records boss Dave Lee heard it and decided it would benefit from a disco-fired soulful house makeover from his artistic alter ego, Joey Negro. The results are naturally impressive. The "Club Mix" is particularly potent, with Lee wrapping Rodriguez's brilliant vocals around a bustling backing track rich in razor-sharp disco strings, elastic jazz-funk bass, funky guitar licks and sparkling synthesizer flourishes. It comes accompanied by a disco-tastic instrumental take and the fantastic "Groove Style Dub", which simplifies things a little and rightly emphasizes the rubbery jazz-funk bassline.
