Review: As 2023 starts to wrap up, Manchester label Nuusic take the time to reflect on the year they've had and bring their many releases together in one comprehensive collection. Looking back over key releases such as Guzi's album Goldstone Life, Grimesy's 'Voices' and Conrad Subs' 'Don't Blame The DJ', there's a powerful range of party starters, bubblers, skankers and slappers. To pick just a few highlights from 30 is pretty hectic, but Tweakz' jazzy planet stamper 'Love & loyalty', Rise's creeped out 'Intertwined' and Guzi & Epicentre's walloping 'Rate My Switch' are a great place to start. If you've got any holes in your Nuusic collection, now's your chance to get stuck in.
Review: In this episode of Serial Killaz Rise dons a jacket with suede patches on the elbows and does his finest impression of a history teacher... First he does the register with the title track, a glitchy, groany sci-fi wooze-out that disarms the class. Other aspects of the lesson include some light science with the super stepper 'Keep The Vibes', some birds and bees chat on 'You Gal' and some more serious words for the students on 'Warning' and 'One Away'. Will the class Rise to the occasion and pass in time for graduation? Press play and find out.
Review: When Guns N Roses welcomed everyone to the jungle all those years ago they promised fun and games. That's fine and dandy but these days a jungle welcoming requires a little more substance... Like stacks of crucial forefront D&B jungle tracks and a vibe that feels like you've spent 3 days straight raving at the Roller Express. And this crew of new-gen heroes - Toby Ross, 4K, Oram and Rise - are the guys to deliver those stacks. Like all previous Jungle Cakes Welcome To The Jungle mix compilations, the selection is diverse and covers all shades and styles from unreleased gold to undisputed classics. All the tracks are available in their full length glory and there's a mix to boot. Trust us, no one is doing it like Jungle Cakes right now. And no one is doing it like Toby Ross, 4K, Oram and Rise too for that matter. One of the best editions so far!
Review: Jungle Cakes' Welcome To The Jungle series continues to rule the mixtape/compilation game as they welcome more fresh faces to get stuck into the mix. Following previous curators such as Kleu, Liondub and DJ Hybrid, they now invite new school men-of-the-moment Toby Ross, 4K, Oram and Rise to get involved... And boy does it look like they're going to deliver. This sampler alone is gully enough to whisper sweet nothings into every seagulls' ear for a whole year. Oram's 'Ricochet Riddim' is work of break-chopping beauty, 4K turbo charges 'Manaman' into oblivion, Toby Ross's 'Signal' brings a savage dancehall dent to the senses while Rise's 'Matriarch' phones home with such a surly swagger you'll be told to wash your mouth out with soap water. Tell your mum.
Review: Nuusic are busy being absolute monsters right now, subjecting us to a slew of heavyweight releases from some of the most exciting young artists in operation at present. Next up: Rise. A man who lives up to his name, Rise has featured on a number of labels including Onyx, Classified and Liondub to name a few but right now all eyes and ears on this stunning collection that ranges from delicious rave vibes ('In Your Arms') to groaning, monster dancefloor mutations ('Intertwined') Complete with a crucial Trex remix, this is a massive buy-on-sight situation.
Review: Gonda & Rise join the Invicta fray with another sampler from the label's '1 Year Of Invicta' anniversary release. 'Hold Up' takes the lead. Originally a free download from Gonda last year, Rise switches up the beats and gives the bassline a wry twist while 'Bull' sees them linking for an all-out bassline slap-about. Big swing on the beats, cheeky on the riff and venomous bars. Invicta smash it once again.
Review: Following releases from the label founder Nooch and a VA featuring a whole host of new-gen talent, Ransaked present their first artist EP in the form of 'The Funk' from young Bristol producer RISE. Four tracks heavy, complete with a remix from Dunk, it's RISE's most comprehensive release to date and it ranges from the subtly bumpy funk of 'Steady Blazin' to the outright grizzly behaviour of the jungle-flavoured 'Feel It'. Both the original and Dunk's remix of 'The Funk' more than live up to their name, too. An exceptional release from a very promising new label.
Review: RISE is on Liondub International and is giving all of us a lesson in how to produce tough, stripped back sonics which carry more attitude than a charging bull. 'Crossbow' is the best example of this, as a no-nonsense drum line penetrates a precisely placed array of gully bass pulls and hair-rising low-frequency pushes. 'Feline' is more classic jump-up, as a potent blast of stabs combine into the type of hands-in-the-air dancefloor action we've come to expect from the genre. Proper stuff.
