Rotciv

Victor has been DJing since 1996, playing in most clubs and raves from the mid 90's to 2010 in his native Brazil, contributing and spreading the electronic music culture locally.
Producing and releasing music for different labels under the name ROTCIV since 2005, some years later he launches Mister Mistery, a label focused on Acid, Disco, House, Electro and Edits with classic influences from 80s and 90s with a truly contemporary edge and unique sound.

In 2010 Victor moves to Berlin and is frequently DJing at the most exciting clubs and parties - From Berghain's Panorama Bar (Lab.oratory, Saule and Kantine) to Cocktail D' Amore, Renate, Else, About Blank, Pornceptual, Kater, Sisyphos, Buttons, Schwuz, Ipse and many more, while also travelling often between Brazil and Europe with his dynamic carefully selected sound.

ROTCIV currently releases original tracks, edits and remixes on labels like: Luv Shack, Permanent Vacation, Ombra International, Funnuvojere, Freeride Millenium, Full Pupp, Polari Records, Unterton (Berghain 's Ostgut Ton), Live At Robert Johnson, Gop Tun, his own Mister Mistery and many more to come.

SPLIT 001
Review: As the matter-or-fact title makes clear, this expansive affair brings together a wealth of tracks from two of Luv Shack's most prolific and consistent artists, Jakobin and ROCTIV. The former steps up first with a trio of tracks. Of these, it's opener 'Drawan' - a deliciously trippy and mind-mangling slab of psychedelic house rich in TB-303 acid bass, fizzing electronics and ghostly chords - that most impresses, though IDM-goes-breakbeat bubbler 'Skulpt' and the deep and trippy 'Octagonal Tribe' are also excellent. ROCTIV drops four tracks, flitting between bass-heavy, acid-flecked breakbeat ('Frenezy', 'Living Art'), re-born early 90s progressive house/nu-disco fusion ('No More Room In Hell') and sub-heavy psychedelic sleaziness ('The Confidence').

No Tears In The Backroom Vol 2
Various
Review: Cormac, the Queer Northern-Ireland born label honcho, returns after a bustling year with a second Polari compilation, "No Tears In The Backroom Vol. 2". Packed with synth-heavy swings, acid basslines, steamy vocals, and an abundance of fun, NTITB Vol. 2 it serves as a perfect introduction to the new year. Cormac, the curator, describes the compilation as a unique family, featuring contributions from label hitmakers like Jordan Nocturne, ROTCIV, and Louis de Tomaso, alongside fresh talents like DJ City, Nimmo, Shay Shaz, Hifi Sean, Joshua James, and Xols. With a 10-track journey that blends anthemic sounds, tapping into nostalgia while staying rooted in contemporary references, No Tears In The Backroom Vol 2 encourages listeners to embark on a dance-heavy pursuit that doesn't hold back. Notably, the label's profits from this compilation go to charity, supporting Doctors Without Borders, a politically neutral NGO focused on treating people in regions where they are most needed, particularly active in Gaza and around the world.

Permanent Vacation 7
Various
Review: Some 15 years after Benjamin Frolich and Tom Bioly launched their Permanent Vacation label with a fine compilation of the same name, the Munich-based pair return with a seventh showcase of treats from the imprint's now sizable roster of artists. As you'd expect, it's an eclectic and uniformly high-quality affair, with the 22 included cuts touching on everything from cheeky electro covers of Chris Rea (DMX Krew's rather good take on 'On The Beach'), deep nu-disco (the star-fall synths and Italo-disco bass of Kendal's Basorexia') and sun-soaked, 80s synth-pop-meets-dream house bliss ('Digital Joy' by Rees), to sleazy slow acid ('Lose Your Soul' by Zilas on Acid), late-night proto-house revivalism (Felice's 'Just Passing By') and rushing, breakbeat-driven dancefloor dreaminess (Dharma's 'The Epiphany'). In a word: excellent.

Elev8tion EP
Review: Four original productions plus a remix of the title track make up this EP from RotCiv, a Brazilian producer who's been based in Berlin since 2010. 'Elev8tion' comes from the Moroder/Baldelli/Robotnick school of thought but has a clear acid house influence as well, while Massimiliano Pagliara's remix smooths out the sharper edges and could work on progressive/melodic house floors. The other three tracks are similarly Italo-inspired, with 'The Morning After' the pick for this reviewer thanks to its slightly less frantic tempo and ominous, broody feel. There's plenty of similar tackle around right now, but this EP's a worthy example of the style for sure.

Edit Not Edit
Review: More mastery from Roctiv on Mister Mistery, a label the Brazilian producer established way back in 2008. These are "Edits Not Edits", trippy and mind-altering dancefloor workouts that blur the boundaries between humble edits, imaginative remixes and sublime original productions. For proof, check the post-Italo psychedelia of delay-laden throb-job "Transducer" or the grandiose, EBM-on-Qualudes haziness of mid-'80s dancefloor weird-out "Be Forever Young". Roctiv reaches for the Fairlight stabs, hypnotic arpeggio bass and ricocheting Art of Noise drum hits on sleazy chugger "Rain Dance", while the equally jumpy and delay-laden "Cyber Countdown" sounds like a mind-mangling revision of a 1987 Ministry B-side.

Victims Of The New World (Remixes)
Review: Second time around for Roctiv's nu-disco era deep house jam "Victims Of The New World", this time with a string of new remixes. Roctiv's disco-sampling, acid-laden 2008 original opens proceedings, while the producer himself closes the EP with a brand new version that's noticeably brighter, breezier and a whole lot more polished. Elsewhere, there's an excellent electrofunk-meets-acid tweak from Tad Wily, a thrilling Balearic house interpretation from Andrew Clarke (seriously wide-eyed and blessed with beats that sound like they've been nicked from The Chimes' "Heaven") and a great, live-sounding re-make from The Cruising. As remixes packages go, it's pretty darn tasty.

Rebirth Classics - Disco
Various
Played by: ROTCIV
Review: Since setting their stall out in 2006, the Rebirth label has tried to reflect changing tastes, mixing up their releases accordingly. This expansive compilation showcases a selection of their disco-tinged releases and remixes, casually moving between dubbed-out nu-disco, revivalist fare and disco-leaning house. There's plenty for disco diggers to enjoy, from he spacey, low-end throb of Mock & Toof's remix of Nufrequency and Faze Action's bouncing synth-disco re-cut of Stretch Silvester, to a vintage, synth-laden collaboration between Spirit Catcher and Ilija Rudman. There's also an early, pre-hype remix from Tensnake and a typically adventurous Dr Dunks outing from Eric Duncan.

Collected Original Works (2007-2011)
Review: There's a growing feeling that the time has come for Berlin-based Brazilian Rotciv to emerge from the shadows. While he's been on the radar of those in the know for some time thanks to a string of quietly impressive edits, remixes and original productions, he's yet to receive wider acclaim. This excellent mini-album of collected original productions could finally tip the balance in his favour. He confidently flits between delicious old skool house, Italo-influenced nu-disco, pleasing deepness, contemporary electrofunk (check the delightful "Need A Fix") and wobbly Kraftwerk-isms, all the while keeping a firm fix on the dancefloor. As with most of his releases, it's well worth a listen.
