Bumpin' Soul EP

Alex Zuiev - "Afro Magic" - (6:28) 118 BPM
Review: It's fair to say that Whiskey Disco rarely fails to disappoint. Sleazy McQueen's long-serving label is undoubtedly one of the most consistent re-edit imprints around, making each successive release a "must-check". Naturally, there's plenty of club-ready goodness to be found on the label's latest missive, from the vibraphone-sporting, reverb-laden disco bounce of Alkalino's "Body & Soul" edit, to the beefed-up, Afro-disco-with-house-beats heaviness of Alex Juiev's "Afro Magic". In between, Love Drop pitch up and straighten out a Grace Jones favourite, while Terrence Pearce brilliantly plays around with a spacey disco classic on "Ushukela". In other words, it's another tight collection of cut-jobs from Whiskey Disco.

Review: FINA Records presents Terrence Pearce's Last Night Lover EP featuring Francis Inferno Orchestra on the rework. Having previously released on a number of prominent labels including Futureboogie, Wolf Music, Petfood, Kolor, Dark Energy and Freshmeat, Cape Town based soul Terrence Pearce has emerged as a talented and sought after artist. The long and drawn out spacey synths of the title track fade in and fade out with subdued strings, while "Come On Yah" provides a warm and effortless disco edged groove, characterized by its infectious low-end throb and clever concoction of playful rhythms, punchy hats, staccato strings and off kilter chords. "Taxi" is wonderfully leftfield amalgamation of horn beeping, door slamming, taxi hollering madness, and Francis Inferno Orchestra returns to FINA by remixing the track with his signature drum machine rhythms, early rave like samples and rainforest atmospherics.

Review: Arriving at a fifteenth release in little more than three years is no mean feat, and the Wolf Music crew have retained a standard of quality throughout that a few other labels could learn from. Once again switching the emphasis from artist release to a quartet of contributors, WOLF 15 opens with a killer Ron Basejam refix of recent Wolf anthem "Nowt" by James Welsh. Originally a louche slice of beatdown, "Nowt" stays at an even tempo in the hands of the Crazy P artist though there are all new levels of seductive funk added. Complementing this are three label debuts of varying style but equal quality, with Squarehead & Mella Dee (one half of Mista Men no less) opting for a brazen concoction of ruffed up garage rhythms and deep house emotions on "Get Together". Next up, breakout house duo Waze & Odyssey add Wolf to their growing CV with the effervescent cut up house rowdiness of "Feel My Voices" whilst South African producer Terrence Pearce might just steal our affections with the skippy, smudged delights of "Magic".
