Review: Milan's Record Kicks have been championing contemporary soul and funk since way back in 2003, and now they celebrate their 20th anniversary with the release of a collection that brings together nine sought-after tracks from their back catalogue and 11 brand new cuts. Featuring contributions from well-known artists like New Mastersounds, Calibro 35 and Tamiko Jones as well as some more underground names, there's no room to go into every track but most of what's here operates in the arena known variously as 'neo' or 'new old' soul while there's room, too, for rawer funk cuts like Martha High's 'Answer To Mother Popcorn' and Calibro 35's 'Stainless Steel', as well as some surprise covers - not least a ska'd-up take on Britney's 'Toxic'.

Review: A pleasant surprise, this album. Normally, when a collection of 'new old' funk of this ilk lands in the inbox, the talent roster comes replete with all the usual suspects, but of the 12 artists featured here, only Tanika Charles's name has previously registered on this reviewer's radar - which makes the dozen authentically sleazy, cinematic and Blaxploitation-esque funkers contained herein all the more of an achievement! With the quality meter showing 'Max' throughout, picking highlights is a bit superfluous - just sit back and enjoy, ideally while sipping coffee and brandy in a 3am East Village diner as you wait for the sting to go down...

Review: It's been a solid four years since we last heard a full length from soul, funk and jazz ensemble The Tibbs. Record Kicks outta Milan who have released all but one of the group's records now clear the way for the band following a big push of Italian four-piece Calibro 35, allowing the Tibbs to bounce back from their Damaged Heart single this year and deliver a third studio album. With the rest of the band firmly intact, Another Shot Fired introduces a new singer to the project in songwriter Roxanne Hartog. Recorded at Electric Monkeys in Amsterdam and produced by Paul Willemsen (think: Lefties Soul Connection, Michelle David & The Gospel Sessions) and mastered in Nashville by Soul veterans Bob Holsen - who used to cut vinyl for Motown back in the day - find bluesy numbers in "Mama Says", a touch of reggae in their title track "Another Shot Fired" next to the bombastic opener "The Main Course".
