1985 Music

1985 Music is a forward-thinking electronic music label with its roots cemented in 170 / 85bpm and beyond. Founded by Alix Depauw aka Alix Perez in 2016, the London-based label has seen stand out releases from the likes of: Dogger, Fracture, Halogenix, Hyroglifics, Mindstate, Monty, Skeptical, Spectrasoul, Visages... and of course, the big bossman Perez himself. Expect anything from deep soulful D&B flavours to moody minimal rollers, half-time steppers and the occasional weighty dubstep production thrown in for good measure. Perez also drives the label’s overall creative output, monochrome aesthetic and popular merch range.

Review: Whenever we see the 1985 Music banner sailing into port, we know we are in for a good time, especially when it carries goods of the level of these from VIsages, who continues to impress with another killer 4 track drop. We open up with the title track 'Dol Guldur', a gnarly fusion of metallic bass tones, neurotic drums and spiced up vocals, followed by Snowy's high energy vocal performance on 'Evidently', a serious grimey throwback. Next, the more ethereal vocal slides and mind-melting synth pads of 'Panacea' flip the themes of the EP right on their head, with a killer vocal appearance from Killa P on 'The Most' giving us the final dash of juice to round this EP off in serious style.

Alix Perez & Ebb - "Hazchem" (original mix) - (4:28) 140 BPM
Review: Once again, the legendary skill sets of Alix Perez are on show for all to see, with this sizzling new collection of 140 rollers looking like another monumental collection from 1985 Music. First up, Psychosis gives us a swampy stomp through gnarly bass drones and bone-chilling atmospheric excitations, followed by Flowdan's killer appearance on 'Militia', a more abstract tweak fest across metallic reverberations and hard hitting, poetic lyricism. Next, glittering synth work gives us more rumbling goodness on 'Circadian', which sees Visages join the party, before Ebb lands of 'Hazchem' for one final smokey spike of original stepper flavour. Top stuff all around

Review: As ever, the fire of the 1985 banner continues to blaze strong, this time welcoming the explosive sounds of HIJINX inside, delivering a scintillating four track sizzler, dripping in original electronic flavour. We open up with the slower-paced, moody sub slides of 'Danger', a gnarly initiation into HIJINX's unique take on the dubstep spectrum, followed by the earth shattering twists of 'Swarm', a serious, synth-driven slam. Next, Cesco joins the party for the slightly swampier bass notation of 'Attention', before the title track 'Macabre', gives us a moody slink through more eerie backdrops and pulsing synth stabs, closing off this masterclass in real style.

Cesco & Hamdi - "Swing King" - (4:29) 140 BPM
Review: The 1985 team have consistently delivered a top notch array of both neurotic D&B flavours and lethal dubstep collections, with this latest offering from Cesco being another great addition to their 140 arm. First up, 'GITP', is an anthemic opener, taking a super catchy vocal line and layering it with silky synthetic magic, before Bidl joins the party on 'Overdue', a behemoth-like bounce through gnarly reeses and fragrant low ends. Next, a more juke-inspired switch up as 'Up The Place' unloads high energy drum rolls and more vocal slices, before Hamdi touches down for a ferocious collaboration in 'Swing King', a final bulbous barge to close things off in style.

Review: Around the world in 12 wubs; Alix Perez's superlative 1985 continues to dig deeper and deeper into our psyche with the third volume of their faultless Atlas VA series. As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electroid funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.

Review: It's not outlandish to suggest that a collaborative display from both Alix Perez and Headland, two of the most innovative in the game, would cause a serious riot. Across eight tracks of genuine sonic wizardry, we explore the deepest and darkest realms of electronic sound design, from the murky synthesiser players of both 'Mirage' Parts 1 & 2, alongside the earth-shattering sub squelches of 'Shuriken' and mind-numbing rhythmic approach of '1024'. It's a truly wondrous collection, pushing the boundaries of sound design to entirely new realms, with our highlights including the uniquely designed flutters of 'Coco', the gut punching subs of 'Elk's Point', the unique rhythmic jolts of 'Hellion' and of course 'The Grove' in all of it's breathy beauty.

Review: As one of Bristol's brightest dubwise sparks, it's always exciting to see Drone return to action, this time around unloading a full length album project, courtesy of the legendary 1985 imprint. In short, it's a masterful display of sonic development, from the slower, more grungy introductory squelches of 'Cyclone' through to the face-melting synth swipes of 'Burnt Lungs' and grime drum-skips of 'The Swamp'. From start to finish, this project showcases Drone's innate ability to to deliver high energy originals, both solo and in collaboration with the likes of Alix Perez, Deft, Snowy, Emz & Nah Eerto. Our highlights have to include the juke-driven carnage of 'Jugtown' alongside Hyroglifics, which packs an energetic slap, next to the euphoric embrace of 'Always' which sees Notion join the party for a lively link up. Overall, pure awesomeness!

Review: It's seemingly an impossibility for the 1985 crew to deliver a lacklustre release, with Submarine giving us an immediate injection of high octane energy on this sizzling display. We open up with the raucous reesey goodness of 'Back Then', a real crunchy combination of tidy percussion and unpredictable bass scrunches. Following this, the high energy levels continue to grow as more of those stunning electronic synth sweeps roll into view on 'Show Me The Way', with 'Physical' then giving us another bite of techy flavour. We then close the project out with a listen to 'Mint Lips', a face wrecker of a riddim, taking unique vocal processing and scattergun synthesiser stabs to bring us a truly mesmerising display of original drum and bass innovation. Awesome work!

Review: It's always an exciting thing to witness a new 1985 bombshell land in the store, with this monstrous four track display from some of the most vibrant names in 140 being no exception to that. First up, the blobby warbles and siren-like synthesiser melodies of Ebb's 'Corrosive Soul' arrive with a major bag of oomph, giving us a swampy swinger to kick off proceedings. Next, label maestro Aliex Perez unleashes a sub-heavy warbler in 'Pulsate', pushing any speakerbox to it's low end limit, before Headland re-ignites the party flavour with the slower paced glitchy gulps of 'Guillotine' for a major sonic switch up. Finally, Samba gets busy with a gnarly piece of gristle as 'Six To Six' lets fly a gnarly combination of synths and drum slaps, rounding off the project with a weighty finish.

From the woozy, dubstep swagger of the opener 'MK Ultra' to the stunning harmonics and dreamy soul of the finale 'Gaia' by way of a whole range of emotions in between, this is an exceptional debut album that says so much over so few tracks. High five to Visages and 1985.

Review: Boom! Calibre on 1985. Do we need to write anything else here? Not really... It's Calibre remixing an absolute gem from Dogger, Mindstate and Liam Bailey, adding his touches just where it's needed and giving a modern day classic a fresh new chapter. As if that's not enough we also have 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' with man like DRS. Review: When it comes to underground dance music, there are few outposts of creativity that are boasting as high a rate of success as Alix Perez's '1985'. We are blessed to take a look into a window of that creativity with this monstrous new collection of sonic sizzlers as Shades, Alix himself and Eprom join forces for the explosive 'From A Vein' album project. This is a true showcase of mastery in our eyes, from the sub-rattling drones of 'Into Stone' to the super electronic syncopation of 'As Wax By Seal' and acidic arpeggios of 'Deceitful Ways'. We are thrown in about 1000 different directions over the course of this 14 track masterclass, with our favourite creations having to include the remarkably chirpy 'Purification' alongside Gaslamp killer, exploring organic drum breaks and super digitised basslines, next to satanic melodic sweeps of 'Sub Noctem' and unpredictable metallic soundscapes of 'Immortals', welcoming MC GQ into the fold at the same time. Outstanding!

Review: Following jams on Bowlcut and Monk earlier this year, Cesco returns to the 1985 mothership with this mighty fine mixed bag of 140/174 treats. 'Rattler' says it all. Curmudgeonly and grizzly, it sizzles out of the speakers with pure venom. Elsewhere on a D&B tip En:vy gets mucked in on tippy harmonics of 'Esoteric' while 'Pity' is all jazzy, slinky and full of tension. Meanwhile on the 140 flip 'El Guapo' is proper hammer jam with a most unruly bassline Q&A while 'Juan40' will have you speaking Spanish before you can say 'wheel up the bloodclart'. Rattle and roll!

Having already teased us with the loose subby swagger of 'Aloose' and the high frequency fire of 'Trench', the EP is now complete with two more unruly late night uppercuts: the dramatic arpeggios and eerie tension of 'Grim Reaper' and the neck-snap steppery of 'Cuffed'. Review: It's always a good day when we see new music landing from the legendary 1985 Music team, who continue to push some of the most exciting and experimental electronic sounds out there right now. This latest four track collection kicks off with founder and sonic mastermind: Alix Perez unleashing a bulbous display of gnarly steppers energy on 'VTRN', jam-packed with sliding LFO's and intricate drum designs, followed by the stuttered rhythms and delicately designed percussive layers of 'Shush' from HIJINX, which also packs a seriously bassy punch to match. The don Ebb then touches down with another chilling creation in 'Ill Rest', maneuvering horrorcore soundscapes and luminescent bass sweeps, before the sizzling reesey tones and clunky drum work of Epoch's 'Beastmode' round the EP off with some serious finesse. Exceptional work as per!

It's instant brilliance as SP joins the fray on the opening track 'Keep Up', a roller laced with subtle but deadly energy and funk. Review: Bonjour! Monty finally delivers his debut artist album and it's an absolute gem from start to finish. Featuring the many cuts he's been teasing over the last few months ('Hardware', 'Vibin' etc) the album takes a deep dive into every sound on the young Frenchman's palette. Flexing from the gnarled 140 bubbles and bumps of 'Dreamer' (with 1985 bossman Alix Perez himself) and the spacey garage vibes of 'Walking Home' to the soulful roll of 'Birdland' (with fellow Toulousian Redeyes) and the electroid night creeping title track, this is the full Monty on levels we've never seen before. Bass music across the whole menu, it's one of those rare LPs that will both slay a club and work well in any other listening scenario. Bonsoir!

We begin our treacherous tale with 'Fugitive', which sees the man himself, Mr Alix Perez arrive on collaborative duty, supplying us with a truly magnificent journey through syncopated rhythm and synthetic action. Next, 'Kaioh' once again throws us wonky drum arrangements and other-worldy soundscaping, drawing us in with some fantastic compositional value, before the creeping melodic manoeuvres and grizzly low-ended writhes of 'Out Of Pocket' launch themselves forward. We then dive down a whole new hole of sonic depravity, as the gut-wrenching synth swipes of 'Migi' provide us with a suitably eye-opening outro. What a project it is!

Review: As always with the now infamous 1985 Music imprint, they have assembled the great and good to explore the darker realms of electronic dance music, primarily focussing on dubstep and neurotic drum and bass flavour through this fabulous new 'Atlas' compilation. The names involved are pretty mind-blowing with a roster including the likes of Alix Perez, Drone, Headland, Foreign Concept, Safire, DRS and many more heavyweight names. The entire project has a touch of finesse and musical class about it, from the beautifully processed drum clanks of 'Nibiru' from Visages to the stunning vocal processing of 'Do Me No Good' from Nymfo. There really isn't a low point to this project with the sweeping soundscapes and electronic destruction of Deft's 'Scars' original being a real high point for us!

Dangerous Sound
Dangerous Sound - (2:49) 120 BPM
Review: Eprom is not only a close production partner of Alix Perez, but he's a reliable source of slower yet possibly even heavier sounds for his label 1985 Music. 'Dangerous Sound' gives you a hint what it's about from the name, and this tune is a halftime monster of frightening proportions, a glitched out and messed up number that has one goal; to blow up the dance. Basslines cut through each other, synths overheat and the overall engineering is on another level; typical Eprom and vintage 1985.

Review: Work hard, rave hard; Jack Workforce continues to dish out next-level tackle with 'Care & Consideration'. Jumping over to Alix's 1985 for the occasion, it's four of his finest cuts to date. 'Show You Something' with Javeon has a vocal hook and dark groove that's up there with 'Oblique' as a serious soulful vocal anthem. 'Apply The Breaks' is a savage slab of 23rd century jazz that nods respectfully to the likes of Krust while 'Don't Tell Part 2' takes off where the first one left us on last year's 'Late Night Soundtrack'... Bewildered by pure roller energy. Finally 'Reasons', another vocal led one with a really interesting riff texture and super detailed drums. Exceptional.

Don't Tell (Part II) - (6:00) 172 BPM Hot
Show You Something New (feat Javeon) - (5:06) 172 BPM
Review: It's hard to overestimate the extent to which Workforce has killed it since he migrated away from SpectraSoul, and the Worthing-based producer is back to his typically prolific self with this single on 1985 Music. Workforce and Alix Perez is a combination from heaven, and both of these tunes display the impeccable engineering, sleek soundscapes and unmistakeable vibiness that they're both known for. 'Don't Tell (Part II) is just pure energy, a chaotically cool dancefloor roller that functions partially as a VIP of 'Don't Tell' from Workforce's last album, but which has been remade anew for 1985 replete with technoid flutters and crisper, more precise percussion. The flipside is liquid of the most Perez of forms, a melancholic, silicon stroll through Javeon's vocal soul and whispering shimmers of summer synthesis. Best in class.

Review: Visages has been one of the big A&R success stories of Perez's 1985 Music, and this four-track EP is the next evolution of his techy, hybrid sound. Dark Guru is titled with an absolute gem of a dubstep track, a loping 140 monster which oozes force and sophistication through waves of undulating low frequencies; a true class act that simply deserves to be heard in a club. The rest of the EP is 170, and the highlight is 'Egotrip', a devilishly sharp minimal roller that stays clear of boring tropes and instead blends guttural bassline sweeps with jagged synth stabs and biting percussive touches. 'Yalda' is also obscenely good, as a crunchy groove beds down amongst soulful vocal notes and shuddering basslines. Best in class.

Review: Few producers have carved out a production signature as twisted and unique as Monty, and the Toulouse-based artist is back on his home imprint of 1985 with another absolute percy of an EP. It's just as diverse as the others, and F4DE moves from jagged dancefloor rollers through to dubstep destruction and deep, distinct liquid sounds. The title tune smacks of previous conquest 'Quest', and its hugely complex array of interlocked sounds ooze sophistication in a manner that's befitting its clubland persona. 'Righteous' is a monster of a 140 track and you can smell the blood from the off, as a foreboding introduction leads you down the path of no return, straight into the belly of the beast. More minimal force follows on 'SVP' feat. Icicle, before two liquid cuts round off the lineup; we especially love the deliberate, purposeful bassline of 'Whatever You Need'. Sensational.

Review: Now it's been a brief minute since we last took in a brand new drop from Drone, one of the finest 140 and grime producers to emerge out of Bristol in recent times. This brand new drop on 1985 music however sees him return to that fantastic form of old, kicking off firstly with the title track 'Evil Sky', a demonic, slightly slowed roller, jam packed with grizzly bass energy from start to finish. Next, the minimal yet potent sub-splashes of 'Back & Forth' are chased up by the dungeon-ready percussive twangs of 'M416' and system-busting bass growls of 'Disturbed' for good measure. Finally, the eerie, bitcrushed landscapes of 'Reptar's Revenge' sees the EP round off with an evil twist, putting the finishing touches on an exceptional body of work.

Review: One of drum & bass' most talent breaksmiths makes a return to 1985 with his second EP on the label, and boy is it a banger. Velocity touches upon the breadth of styles we've come to expect from Fracture, as 'Shada Shada' lopes along with effortless groove and sophisticated bashment flow and Nah Eto puts on a shockingly good performance in the vocal layer. 'Avian' is more considered drum & bass spaciness, with celestial synth nodes and a breezy atmosphere that reminds us of Exit Records. 'Latee Killer' is the slammer of the bunch, with off-kilter drum work and a might kick drum that'll follow you into your sleep, and 'Biscotti' is a stab-laden, frantic roller with plenty of attitude. Big ups.

Review: 1985 is undoubtedly one of the most exciting labels in drum & bass and never fails to push music that's fresh and exciting. The Folio/ series is coming to an end, but the third instalment is a worthy final chapter in Perez's four-track VA odyssey. He's roped in some of the scene's best with Halogenix, Workforce, Visages and Hyroglifics all joining Perez himself across the four tracks, and the results are futuristic, danceable and deeply satisfying. 'Unlustrous' is unique in its structure, with flowing, wobbly arrangement that builds and builds over the entire tune into something massively heavy. Hryglifics possibly has the most creative track with 'Day By Day', while Workforce's 'Simple, Positive Things' is relentlessly dark. Top class.

Review: One of the scene's most long-running liquid masters is back with a mini-LP, an eight-track exploration of his sound that is sure to be a future benchmark for just how perfect the lighter side of things can be. It's Alix Perez, of course, and Without End is a masterpiece in soulful soundscapes, a gentle, deft piece of music that rollicks and flows with touches of melancholic nonchalance. It's designed to be listened to as cohesive piece of music, and the first track - Wondering At A Loss - lays the tone perfectly; suble piano ripples, distant vocal shimmers and crisp, finger-click drums. The string-laden build-up of 'Someone Else' is unmissable, as are the funky steps of 'Moving On' featuring the utterly superb Liam Bailey. He also finishes up the EP on 'Lost & Proud', and the other features - Halogenix, Workforce - are similarly stunning. Spellbindingly good.

Review: After several appearances on compilations and the like, Visages are finally releasing their first full length EP on Perez's 1985 imprint. It's a label with a reputation for excellence, and Perez's self-designed visual aesthetic goes a long way to grounding this four-tracker into a broader, interrogable creative context. It's part soul, part grit, and the title tune gets this rolling through a cheeky nod to the former, Laville's vocals superbly stitched above a bed of pure movement. 'Amaryllis' is a relentless minimal number full of eerie vocal samples, 'Empire' feat. Skylark is restrained madness, a growling piece that always feels on the verge of something crazy, and 'Early Morning' is another slice of well-engineered, futuristic liquid. Unreal.

If it's anything like About You this EP is set to be fantastic, as Visages absolutely nail 1985's signature style, with powerful sweeps of synthetic soul that roll over the top of one another amidst a flurry of tumbling hats and fluid ambience. Laville steals the show, his vocal coming in at the perfect time to inject this tune with an added dose of energy. Superb.

In doing so, they've kept up their winning formula of jazz-infuenced, musical drum & bass paired with Liam Bailey, who is joined this time around by [ K S R ] and DRS. The title track is yet another two-step power ballad from the trio and, in the vein of Broken Home, there's a sumptuously smooth introduction that sways into the drop with the swishness of a silk gown falling to the floor. Anile features on the gorgeous Don't Hurt Me, and DRS rounds out the second two tunes with his usual aplomb.

We kick this one off with a look at the spooky overtones and warbling synthesizer growls of 'Ravana', before the shivering LFO designs and glitchy melodic plucks of 'Lifeline' stutter into play. Four tracks deep, each one reflecting just how exciting drum & bass is right now. This is the second outing in the mini VA series Folio/ and they've pulled out all the stops, roping in a who's-who of forward-thinking music that includes Perez himself, SubMarine, Hyroglifics and others. Perez's contribution is classic Perez: moody, murky basslines and soothing, haunting samples that balance each other out into an equilibrium of pure satisfaction. SubMarine's 'Grunge' is more pure energy, a rippling number that's as fluid as it is devastating - perfect for the dancefloor. Tracks 3 and 4 don't mess around as well, but we're not really very surprised because Scepticz, Lavance, Hyroglifics and Visages are all just so damn good. Pick this one up.

Hot on the heels of his "Big Up The Ladies" EP on his own Astrophonica, he links up with the 1985 crew with four more absolute heaters. "Give Me Love" brings Fox into the fray to remind us why he's one of the UK's best melodic MCs over a freshly sharpened jungle riddim, "Feel 4 U" raises the spine-tingles with its rave pads while lowering your centre of gravity with its bashy beats and gutter-slopping bass shreds, "Realise" sees 1985 bossman Perez get mucky in the dark grumpy rolling mix while "Brothers & Sisters" taps back into the more techno-inspired aesthetics Fracture's been exploring lately. Rolling deep with Liam Bailey, each track hits with authenticity and realness; "Broken Home" has a Conrad and Bukem feel as Bailey flexes his broadest of ranges, "Love Is The Law" lashes out with big splashes of jazz while "Rebels" touches on a little dub warmth before "So So" closes with the sultriest showdown of the set. Easily the most sensual record to land on 1985 so far. Stunning.

Review: 1985 Music was founded by Alix Perez a year or two ago and, since then, has rapidly become one of the premier destinations for forward-thinking sonics that inhabit the 85-170bpm spectrum. With a fresh roster including Monty, Submarine and Perez himself, Edition 2 is a showcase of both the producers and sounds that Alix has in his orbit. There are too many outstanding tracks to recount here, but 'Drones' by Cesco stands out as one of the most creative: a subby, stepping halftime cut with an ingenious drum pattern. There's weighty rollers, too, including 'Swayed' by Bredren and 'Good To Me' by Perez and Monty, both of which are sublime examples in minimal construction. A truly sick collection of tracks.

Review: There's absolutely no debate to be had about whether Monty is one of the breakout producers from the past couple of years. The man is an absolute genius and the ease with which he fits in at 1985 Music doesn't need to be said again, all that does need to be said is how bloody good this new release is. The title track is characteristically Monty, a sub bass wave of minimalist energy that just rolls and rolls, each small detail accounted for and each hit perfectly placed. 'Virgo' featuring label boss Alix Perez is another astoundingly good track and the way in which these two manage to carve an attractive melody out of dystopic soundscapes never fails to impress. The final two? Yeah, you guessed it - incredible.

Review: Submarine is quickly emerging as one of the hottest new talents in the game. His very recent EP on Dispatch was of top-notch quality and his previous outings on 1985 have been as well. Now he's back for his first full-length EP on Perez's label and oh boy, it's good. 'Xertz' is one of the deeper cuts, subterranean synths rumbling away underneath trademark 1985 percussion precision. It rolls quickly into Dive Alarm, possibly one of the most unique tracks released in years and an incredible piece of music. You need to listen to it to understand properly, but Submarine has created a five-minute masterclass in minimal progression that'll keep you engrossed the whole way. 'Luna' is another minimal masterclass, subtle pinches of force edging out over each other against a backdrop of blackish ambience. Finally, 'Angler Beat', which manages to keep the EP fresh even after the uniqueness of the previous 3 tunes. A halftime, jungley number that rattles and rattles and rattles, 'Angler Beat' is the last gasp of a truly amazing release on an amazing label.

Review: Perez has always been ahead of the game but he is doing some serious bits right now. Following his Shades album (with Eprom), the bruising "Haunted" plus the consistent future shocks his label 1985 have been giving us comes this breath taking four tracker; "BXL" opens with high voltage textures that sizzle at 1.21 gigawatts while "Slink" closes on a subdued emotional tip with introspective vocals and a purring bassline. In between we have two absurd collaborations; Monty helps Alix turn bass into toxic treacle on "Caligo" while Icy joins the fray for a heavyweight droning roller laced with classic ravey vocal stab on "Live With It". Deal with it.
