Review: On the evidence of Red Light District, it sounds like James Johnson has been listening to a lot of classic 90s techno. Available on the sub-label of Michigan's 6ONE6, this release moves from the insistent yet lithe jacking of "Hoe Hoppin" - which comes across like a muted version of Rob Hood, its hisses and filtering deft and perfectly placed - to the harder Armani-esque. "Not The Nice Guy". There, Johnson lives up to the track's title, with granite hard beats and evil siren riffs recalling the Chicago track-master at his best. "Sexy Bitch" continues in the same vein, but Johnson shows on "To The Next" that he's not just about intense ghetto techno and the pummelling, grainy beats are softened by deep, swirling chords.
