Critical Music

Bursting onto the underground scene in 2002, Kasra’s multi-award winning label Critical Music has been rolling out nothing but ice cold drum and bass ever since. Originally starting as a passion project in Kasra’s North London flat, the label has grown to diversify its sound, pushing out anything from deep, rich, liquid, minimal steppers, bouncy half-time cuts and hard-edge ammunition. Nurturing new talent and supporting some of D&B’s finest, Critical boasts a five star roster of artists including: Circuits, Charl Brix, Enei, Emperor, Fade Black, Foreign Concept, Halogenix, Hyroglifics, Ivy Lab, Jakes, Levela, Mefjus, Particle, Redders, Rider Shafique, QZB, Solah, Sam Binga, T>I and the big boss Kasra himself. Critical is also home to its highly esteemed club night series, Critical Sound, which has sold out Bristol’s Motion and London’s Studio 338, as well as taking shape as branded festival stages across the UK and overseas.

Future Forever
Harlem - (3:03) 130 BPM
Review: Swiss duo QZB finally unveil their long-awaited debut album and it's a sleek, stunning body of work that purrs and pumps with precision and growls and grooves with glowing grace. Featuring link-ups with the likes of Charli Brix, T Man, Mara Sophia, MC XL and Hadley, there's a fluency and fluidity across the collection that takes you on a journey through the most futurist and delicate of drum & bass pastures. From the emotional yearns of 'Dangerously High' to the much darker aggression of 'Combat Drugs', this is QZB at their most honest, heaviest and direct. Onwards!

Late Ones - (2:54) 131 BPM
Review: Two things in life are guaranteed, Critical Music remaining as consistent as ever and Hyroglifics continuing to push the boundaries further than ever though sonically possible. This latest album sees a truly vibrant collection put on display, exploring the farthest stretching reaches of the Hyroglifics sound, from the thumping half-time sweeps of 'Sing To It' alongside Nah Eeto's crispy vocal display, to the sub-smashing LFO crunches of 'Juggin' and more party-driven atmospherics of 'Late Ones'. We see a number of additional vocal appearances across the project, with Yeo Limone, Black Josh, Lyza Jade and Fuex all delivering unique and inspiring performances. With such a wide array of sonic mastery on display, it's difficult to pick favourites, but the sharpened synthesiser twangs of 'Burnt Tongues' and roller-inspired rumbles of 'You Got It' would be two immediate standouts.

Your Eyes (feat Bart De Vries) - (4:42) 131 BPM
Review: Is it a small album? Is it a big EP? Who cares? It's Waeys doing bits on Critical Music with his most substantial and explorative body of work so far. Already preceded by big soulful singles like 'Set The Vibe' (with the inimitable flowanastasia) and 'Nothing' (with the equally brilliant Patch Edison) now comes the full showdown as the Dutch don delivers some of his best work to date... The jazzy introspection of 'Familiar Face', the dusty hip-hop feels of 'Five After' and the slower tempo of 'Your Eyes' are just some of the highlights here. What an exceptional release. Big love to Waeys.

Maison Binga-Chimpoix presents: Ultra Luxe
Ultra Luxe - (3:49) 131 BPM
Played by: Damageman
Review: Two of drum & bass' most creative producers are teaming up on Critical, a label which never shies away from innovation, to bring you an EP inflected with multi-genre tonalities. The pair have made their name in everything from grime to garage to halftime to drum & bass, and its this legacy that's on full display across all four tracks on Ultra Luxe. The title track is peppered with synth wave textures and grungy aesthetics and it lopes along in punchy two-step rhythms, with escalating melodies that swell into serious atmospheric suspense. 'Rude AF' is the rattling jungle roller, a sub-heavy exercise in rudeboy sonics, whilst 'Murda Dem' brings the harsh tones of Slay to bear on another clubland monster. Oh yes.

Dispositions - The Remixes
Solah - "Made Of Light" (Unplugged version) - (5:44) 134 BPM
Played by: Hex, SpectraSoul
Review: As the dust continues to settle from Emperor's deeply personal debut album Dispositions, along come four unique versions that add whole new narratives to his tracks: long-time friend and all-round legend Phace flips "Haste" with a whole new dynamic of funk that's almost jump-up in its nature and attitude. Ivy Lab lay down serious halftime heat with the brilliantly slouching, lolloping g-style twist of "Jounce" while Klax switch up "Made Of Light" with different, more dramatic style of halftime. Finally we hit the most interesting curveball of all - a touching, unplugged take on the evocative "Made Of Light" where SOLAH's vocals tremble with even more poignancy against the piano. Emotional.

Critical Presents: Systems 007 - Sam Binga & Chimpo 'For Those Who Like It Sweet'
Drank - (3:16) 133 BPM
Played by: Unkey, HomeSick, Calculon
Review: When we say 'massive' you say 'collab'... It doesn't get much murkier than Binga and Chimpo. Drawing lines through jungle, grime, juke, halftime and anything else they care to, the northern doublet lay the gully hammer down. From the dramatic aquatic riddim and call/response to the trapped out skittish groove of the title track by way of the ghetto-tech fury of "Drank", the pure prang of "Sassy Riddim" and cosmic hip-hop alien lapdance anthem "Selection Dark", this really sounds like nothing else on the planet.
