Local Talk

Fueled by a shared passion for house music, Local Talk emerged onto the scene in early 2011. The driving force behind the label is the powerhouse duo of Mad Mats (renowned DJ and club promoter of Raw Fusion/GAMM) and Tooli (celebrated DJ from Stockholm's nightlife, known for his acclaimed 24:HRS parties and blog). Local Talk serves as their platform to champion their deep love for the genre.

Review: Black Fan has only put out one EP on Wolf Music Recordings prior to this latest outing on Sweden's excellent Local Talk stable. His music is characterized by deep, dubby and raw beats coated in a distinctive party flavor, qualities heard loud and clearly on the wonky bumps of "In The Water". "Dancin' Together" takes the more soulful approach, where choppy female vocals ride above jittery chords and starry pads, whereas "J2015" is an altogether dustier affair, a quick-firing mass of percussion shots and siren-like melodies.

Review: Kiko Navarro has dropped his signature style of funky, soulful house on pretty much any label worth releasing on - Nite Grooves, Third Ear and even King Street Sounds to name a few! He returns on Local Talk with two new cuts, both of them ripe and ready for hip-swaying vibes. "Dope High" is an itchy, Kenny Dope kinda tune boasting a totally swung-out percussion and a militant groove for the DJ's. You've also got "Nea Kameni", a gorgeous house number with old-school synth keys, and it's remixed by none other than Chicago house don Glenn Underground who strips it back, jacks it down and transforms it into a funky and laid-back kinda tune. Local Talk delivering the goods!

The Co-Op EP
Chesus & Timmy P - "Vitamin C" - (6:33) 123 BPM Hot
Zoa Zoe - "Bust Them Wifes" - (5:31) 126 BPM
Review: By diligently releasing quality underground jams, Stockholm's Local Talk continue to prove that the Scandinavians aren't just all about the stadium-filling jock-house of Swedish House Mafia. Here in typically reasonable Scandi style they divide this EP equally between two talented acts. First up Chesus & Timmy P serve up some pretty serious tackle in the form of "Vitamin C" - all New York claps and rolls, diva vocals, retro organ riffs and trippy stereo-panned loops. Zoe Zoe, on the other hand, opts for deep US garage married to relentless hip-hop samples on the slammin' "Bust Them Wifes".

Review: Yet more upfront house music from the Local Talk posse, this time looking to Moodymanc to serve up the chunky peak-time goods, kicking off with the jazzy lilt of "Morning". It's a feisty little number, keeping the beats strictly uptempo even as the samples come drifting in and out hypnotically. "Mr Ruff" has a choppier edge to it, throwing down Soundstream-esque stabs amongst a stout set of drums. Kyodai remixes "Mr Ruff" into a smoother blend, letting mellow chords merge into one another while the rhythm section holds it down with grace and patience, making for an emotive cut in the process.

Review: It's a sign of the ludicrously prolific nature of Mad Mats and Tooli's Local Talk imprint that this is their third compilation of label highlights this year. That the quality threshold remains impressively high is credit to their A&R skills. Encompassing revivalist US garage, twinkle-eyed deep house and enveloping groovery, Talking House Volume 3 is packed full of distinctive dancefloor highlights. Check, for example, the fearsome acid tweakery of Anaxander's breathless "My Aniseed Lollipop", the wide-eyed, piano-laden rush of Deep Space Orchestra's brilliant remix of The True Rebels' "Bitter Love", and the baggy, organ-heavy samba-house warmth of Tommy Rawson's "Don't Lose It". And that's just for starters. In a word: essential.

Bring It Back - (5:22) 123 BPM
Vodka & Valium (Crackazat dub remix) - (8:08) 120 BPM
Review: Such is the frequency of their output, you'd think Local Talk were trying to set a record for the highest number of releases in any given 12-month period. All jesting aside, their quality threshold remains high, and this EP from the previously unheralded Tony Blitz is another winner. "Vodka & Valium" rolls along at a furious tempo, delivering a mix of speaker-wobbling low-end bounce, hip-wigglin' US garage beats and some particularly curious vocal samples (listen to the clips and you'll know what we mean). Crazkazat remixes, turning the original into a smooth, classic sounding chunk of wide-eyed piano house. "Bring It Back", meanwhile, moves further towards UKG territory whilst retaining a gooey deep house centre.

Jungle Madness EP
Electric Piano On The Run - (8:01) 125 BPM
Drumming Man - (6:38) 123 BPM Hot
Forest Dance - (6:24) 125 BPM
Review: Madness is the work of a young Swedish producer, even though it sounds like it was crafted by a seasoned artist. As its title suggests, "Electric Piano On The Run" is a freeform, jazzy house jam, with slinky piano tinkling and lush strings supported by an offbeat groove. "Drumming Man" does what it says on the tin, with dense, live drums underpinning dramatic, plucked riffs. Best of all though is "Forest Dance"; achieving the near impossible balancing act of fusing 70s sleaze soundtracks with early techno synths, its loose organic rhythm and subtle jazz keys provide the backdrop against which these seemingly incompatible worlds meet and get it on.
