Review: Anthem alert! Pioneer jungle Queen DJ Rap lays down the absolute law on this booming sing-along link-up with David Boomah. Huge basses, addictive riff, chiselled steppy beats and a scorchio vocal, this one totally lives up to its name with dramatic and theatrical effect and a strong sense of catharsis in Boomah's message. Need variations for extra mixing creativity? Check for the instrumental dub versions and let yourself go in the mix!
Review: Mixing the sound of the old school with the aesthetics of now can be risky, but "You Got Me", the first track from this short but sweet EP blows any pre-fabricated doubts out of the water. Giving the release an intro built from the simple roll of underwater bass and adding overlaid piano loops and vintage breaks, there's an undercurrent of experimentation that sticks throughout, but more importantly, there's a feeling that each tune was made to be played to crowds. It's not a vanity project - Killin knows what he likes and that's getting crowds amped. "Close My Eyes" proves this with insane jungle breaks and hands-in-the-air pads and "Day Dream" closes with pretty melodies matched perfectly to rolling snares and deep, velvety bass. Get down to the front.
Review: If you're looking for a liquid release with a bit of an extra kick, Outsource has created the perfect trio for you. A perfect issue of intelligent headphone-friendly tunes, "Propa Liquid Vol 1" might be the most solid new liquid release of the year. "Plazma" is a gorgeous cosmic roller shaped with jungle patterns of the harder stuff. "Time Lapse" leans back into pure chillout material, with the old school ambiance and skip-a-beat percussion of a true classic. Finally "Delusions" moves back into the cosmos with spacious synths and fathoms-deep bass underpinning the whole stellar shebang.
Review: Propa Talent present five inspired remixes of DJ Rap's "Digable Bass", spanning from the sublime to the ridiculous. First up, Voltage takes a blessed-out trip down memory lane, as his remix switches from serenity to pure old skool jungle break nuttery. Aries & Stivs take up the reigns on next and the remix swiftly picks up all the sounds old heads will remember from the great days of drum & bass' early glory years. DJRap remixes herself for track three, unpicking her workings to show huge pockets of ponderous harmonising and big blasts of techy bombast. For the fourth, Silent Code takes the track on a techy tip, moving out to interstellar regions of neuro and jump up. Finally, OutSource continues the moddy technophile theme with a beautifully stretched out bassline. You need this.
