Review

Transmute is Engi's debut release on Trapez, but he makes techno like a veteran. The title track is a ferocious affair, underpinned by a driving rhythm and featuring noisy analogue riffs that gush like storm-powered waves. "Damascus" is more in line with the typical Trapez sound, with a stripped back rhythm providing the basis for acid-heavy licks and spacey synths. On "Medial Lateral Balance", he opts for a middle ground of sorts - the groove is linear and hypnotic, but still driving, while the focus remains on spaced out filters and dramatic, surging chords. For the most part though, this is a heavy release, and the monstrous kicks and acrid rave riffs of "Brick City" represent the apex of its intensity.
