GNESIS - "Pear" - (3:24) 159 BPM
Bird Matrix (DJ-Kicks) - (13:04) 51 BPM
Review: K7's DJ Kicks compilation series is given a new makeover with their latest juggernaut from London-based electronic deviant, Actress, who gives one of his rare appearances out of the live format and onto the decks. As expected, the techno shape-shifter puts through a diverse mix of 20-plus tracks spanning old-school Chicago house to more contemporary experimental techno and ambient-filtered dance music. This continuous DJ mix includes vintage Detroit techno from Reel By Real, distorted outsider disco from the Shit & Shine crew, Gherkin Jerk's "Red Planet" and a new cut from the man himself, "Bird Matrix". It's safe to say that this mix is comprehensive of the current state of affairs in the techno world: cuts ranging from the distorted house of Breaker 1 2, golden era electronica from Autechre, TTT's Zennor, Germany's STL and even PPU affiliate Moon B! An essential collection of music from 2015, highly recommended, of course!

Max Graef - "Speed Metal Jesus" - (2:13) 70 BPM
Diggs Duke - "Cause I Love You" - (2:27) 75 BPM
K15 - "Time Humbles Us All" - (2:19) 154 BPM
Review: There's much to admire about Kamaal Williams' contribution to the long running DJ Kicks series, not least the producer, DJ and keyboardist's blend of self-made exclusives (both under his name and his alternative Henry Wu alias) and largely overlooked gems. Highlights in the former category include a stunning live version of "Snitches Brew", the jazzy Latin house of "Projections" (a Henry Wu hook-up with Earl Jeffers) and "Lowrider", a jazz guitar-propelled cut from his collaborative Yusuf Kamaal project. In the latter category, we'd suggest wrapping your ears around Awanto 3's dusty and ultra-deep "Pregnant", the deep jazz-funk bliss of Diggs Duke's "Cause I Love You", the up-tempo dancefloor soul of Peven Everett's "Stuck" and the slow motion wonder that is Steve Spacek's "Hey There".

Harrar / Witness Dub
Harrar - (5:49) 155 BPM
Review: Washington DC's James Bangura really stands out from the rest with his truly singular take on electronic music that's appeared of late on labels like Incienso, World Building and Holding Hands. His latest comes courtesy of legendary German imprint !K7 Titled 'Harrar', a frantic and hyper aware experiment in off-the-grid post dubstep that will totally flip your mind. Then he goes for something more straightforward in the form 'Witness Dub' an emotive deep house cut that's perfect for the late night.

ZEZE (Remixes)
ZEZE (acoustic version) - (4:50) 73 BPM
Review: A slightly confusing talent roster here, as New York-based producer Photay teams up with members of UK Afro-Latin dance band Penya as WEMA, then recruits Tanzanian gogo star Msafiri Zawose and London's Marysia Osu to take care of vocal and harp duties respectively. The Acoustic Version of 'ZEZE' is a melancholy, mournful piano-and-voice piece, the Photay Version adds rolling hand percussion and exotic-sounding wind instruments, but it's the Middle Eastern-tinged Magnus PI Version that stands out to these ears, and that's no doubt coming soon to a chill-out room near you.

Review: !K7 continue to celebrate The Exclusives DJ Mix series that takes a 'best of' selection of tracks that were produced and performed by the DJs who mixed some of the earlier DJ-Kicks albums. Highlights here include the moody ballroom house of Jayda G's "All I Need", Cinthie's all time classic "Organ" to Leon Vynehall's deeply seductive "Ducee's Drawbar". Mr. Scruff & CyberPunkJazz make the cut with their space oddity "3001: A Space Disco Remix" next to some higher tempo experimetalisms from Laurel Halo's "Sweetie" - and let's not leave out a rare Robert Hood number via the etroit legend's dubbed out "Focus". That, and much more!

Mirage - The Osam Remixes
Make Up (Cay Taylan's ambient Diary mix) - (9:46) 154 BPM
Review: With a rich musical journey that spans from early electronic experiments with tape decks to their distinctive dub compositions, Tosca's recent album Osam gets re-rubbed & re-dubbed. Enter Mirage the OSAM remixes - named after a quaint café in Vienna that holds a special place in the creative processes of Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber (aka Tosca). Collaborating with familiar remix partners like Brendon Moeller who sends in three distinct versions - next to an Ambient Diary mix by Cay Taylan - a bevy of other remixes take in the reflective sounds of piano crescendos, dubbed-out interludes and ambient explorations. Tosca, too, contribute their own reinterpretation by giving "Shout Sister" its own ambient remake.

Club Hexagon Vol 1

Lil Crack - "Aggressive Riddim" - (4:15) 66 BPM Hot
Review: The (Re)Sources label is still relatively young in terms of releases and artists, but they've already instilled a sense of reliability from our viewpoint, particularly for the diversity AND quality of their output, whether that be house, techno, or straight-up bass. This is their first compilation yet, an eight-track spew of all sorts of forward-thinking beats named Club Hexagon Vol.1. Chaams' opener is a twisted pile of bass and morphing samples, and other stand-outs include the techno-minded "Diamonds Foot" by Sheas Drunk, Tommy Kid's gunshot ride "Shanghai", and the moody, deep bass weight of "Bloom Doom" by John Vitesse. Hold tight for the second chapter!

Antimatiere
Antimatiere - (5:03) 64 BPM
Review: After notable appearances on Slime and Hot N Heavy, Parisian bass buster Hybu slides over to the emergent [re]sources label, also based in the French capital. The vibe on Antimatiere is a slippery one, even just on the title track as it moves from a tense 4/4 intro into a dextrous 2-step roller that maximises on a stripped down drum set and brooding bass rubs. "Euthanasie" meanwhile channels the spirit of dub techno in its opening tones before edging itself up into a break-encrusted rave jam for modern times. On the remixes, Mella Dee turns "Antimatiere" into a taut broken techno romp, while Blume simmers "Euthanasie" into a hovering percussive workout that sustains an icy tension throughout.

Mad:AM - "Wait" (Krizzli remix) - (5:00) 65 BPM
Review: Future Parisian rhythms; [Re]Sources [re]mix the debut document that came our way this time last year and instantly won them friends such as Monki, Woz and Roska. First up She's Drunk gets busy on "Pulse", playing havoc with the space-travelling breakbeat with funky mischief. Galtier kicks it old school with classic rave samples and breakbeats over the still-haunting bleep hook of "Suspect" while Krizzli shuts things down with a twisted jungle take on "Wait". Steppy stop-starts with well chiselled gnashers, it chomps up the drama with a great sense of dark momentum before dropping you into the dreamiest of pads. Game changer.

Nen Ability (Jesza remix) - (3:30) 150 BPM
Review: Right about now it's time to jump into some truly exciting original bass music as Mamboussa steps forward with a very interesting self-entitled body of work, showcasing a range of vibrant production styles. We take a look at 'Open' first, with its rolling percussive leads and constantly rotating soundscapes. Next, we dive into 'Nen Ability, a funky breakbeat hybrid, smashing together distorted expanses and tight drum selections. Finally, 'Swan' breaks into the picture with is unusual structure, perfect for sending the dance in a different direction. This project also comes complete with four official remixes, as Lil Crack and Akito jump in to the mix with 'Swan', alongside Jaymie Silk's emotional recreation of 'Open' and Jesza's juke-like rethink of 'Nen Ability'.

Azraq Vision
Azraq - (4:26) 63 BPM Hot
Azraq (Tarquin remix) - (3:17) 63 BPM
Review: One could almost argue that the (Re)Sources imprint is just about the most resourceful UK indie to be jumping about in our charts as of late. The fledgling imprint has managed to carve its own path between post-dubstep antics and techno slashing over the years, and it's thanks to new talent such as Fatal Walima, the newcomer in question. Walima very much has his own strain of bass art going on here; tunes like "Azraq" or "War" have taken the heart of grime and placed it one something different, newer and more at the cutting-edge of UK bass experimentation. Stop and start dig riddims dominate this fiery EP, and it even branches out into a bit of 4/4 thanks to remixes from the likes of Joseph Marinetti, Tarquin and Douster. YESSS.

Rising Clouds
Rising Clouds - (7:26) 172 BPM Hot
Zenith - (6:02) 172 BPM
Played by: Mauoq
Review: There's something wicked about a proper two-tracker, it doesn't require the time investment of a full EP but still lets you wallow around and take your time with the two tracks on offer. Ink has arrived with some slick, old school jungle sounds and it's a style that's increasingly back on the rise at the moment, with people still dancing 30 years on. 'Rising Clouds' is spacious and celestial, with soaring but subtle synths that pepper the top end of the range and solid, fractious drums that power away in the engine room below. Zenith is a much deeper track, with a rolling drum line and acidic synths that pop and flow with a lovely sense of melancholia. Delicious stuff here.

Lithium (Pixelord remix) - (3:03) 155 BPM
Review: Not quiet on the eastern front. Hyperboloid's adventurous bass and experimental electronic outpost turns it up with a new load frequencies from Circuit Aesthetics. Full of searing tension, trance-like vogue and collapsing rave this Closed Curve LP puts on quite a show. With hardcore flares of synthesised beatmaking crashing into futurist-punk, new wave and R&B to hip hop andother industrial computer musics, the album features Pixelord twice alongside Portwave in an album highlight "Glory" and the dubbed out, experimental bliss of "Voices".

Arj0na & Ytem - "Victory" - (3:19) 150 BPM
Review: Next up from the #internetghetto crew we see them unveil something truly special from Arj0na, who brings us four stunning original creations, delving deep into the new wave sound. Kicking off with 'Legendary Quest', we are greeted by incredible uplifting synthesizer patterns and a bone-chilling vocal line, before we hear an expertly undertaken rework of 'Wings Of Freedom' from Hiroyuki Sawano, bringing additional colour to the table with some exceptional synth work. That theme is continued heavily in 'Aerodinamica' which takes a rave-like synth and lets it run as lead with a touch of magic, before the incredibly emotive vocal sprinklings and harmonic structures of 'Victory' alongside Ytem put the finishing touches on this top draw body of work.

Bastard Prince - (3:08) 50 BPM
Giant Steps - (3:22) 52 BPM
Review: The Guillotine duo come from Brazil, but they make a noise more in keeping with the kind of grimy electronics one would expect to hear on Diagonal or Panzerkreuz. "Bastard Prince" starts the release with waves of droning noise before veering into a low-slung electro rhythm that stutters, belches and burps unpredictably. "Giant Steps" is even more unusual, a discordant mess of a track that sounds like an update of Test Dept or Foetus. Finally, the duo veers back towards a form of electronic dance on the title track. "Razor" is underpinned by dubby beats but it's the distorted sonic fog and jarring distortion that'll shatter nerves and synapses every time.

They've got the ever impressive Splitradix with the neon-lit feels of "Navs 202", veterans The Exaltics with some overdriven acid snarl on "What If We Could", while Betonkunst is typically dusty and lo-fi on the moody synth wave of "Zelfkant" and Krampfhaft closes it out with the off-kilter slam of "Meanwhile At The Old Warehouse".

Review: What better way to kick start the party than an underground dance music collection? This time it's being given to us by the fantastic team over at Back 3 who have pulled together a wonderful compilation with this one, being the second edition of the '1 More Tune' series. Featuring 15 of the most palpable 4x4 bangers, from the silky liquid flavours of Hallow's Aquifer, to the tech-induced percussive pulses of 'Peggy Cadis' from Baronna, and back around shuffling, synth-heavy halftime struts of Amalgamate's 'Save U', a delicious dubstep-infused masterclass. Overall, the pure depth of dancefloor heat this project is able to expand across is it's strongest asset, with sounds covering D&B, Breakbeat, Dubstep and more, with our highlights including the ruckus-inducing synth growls of 'The Hive & The Queen', next to the gorgeous roller soundscape of Jinbu's 'The Answer' and Erotic Cafe''s super abstract 'Alive'. Fantastic stuff.

200 Press EP
200 Press - (6:13) 63 BPM Hot
Review: It's been a while since the last fresh outing of James Blake material, and he surfaces on his plenty active 1-800 Dinosaur imprint with some typically esoteric material that confirms he still exists in his own unique sound world. "200 Press" is a track that evolves with elegance, with an electro thread powering the track while around drift wild bass notes, displaced vocals and occasional chimes, and still it grows into a spellbinding crescendo infected with ghetto swagger. "200 Pressure" takes a more obscure and yet bombastic approach with strange punk inflections, lurid synth intervals and a lot of found sound disturbance. "Building It Still" by way of comparison lets a little of the more classical musicianship sneak in, leaving odd poem "Words That We Both Know" to round off the EP on an ambiguous but personal note.

Shirin - (3:07) 65 BPM
Review: It's been a while since we were last treated to a fresh release from Airhead, but now he's back with a four tracker for the 1800-Dinosaur imprint, which finds his wayward beat science spanning all kinds of moods and tempos. The lead track sports some house-orientated signifiers but there's still plenty of room for grubby bass and off-kilter percussion without sacrificing the groove. "Shirin" meanwhile flexes a grime attitude over some loose rolling drums with a hand played feel that offsets the plastic string stabs perfectly. "Shekure" has greater links to the earlier Airhead output, keeping things sparse and fractious while the tense atmosphere reins supreme, and then "Hundred Years" delivers another swerve loaded with powerful pads and tweaked out hip hop vocals.

1-800 DINOSAUR Presents Trim
Man Like Me - (2:57) 65 BPM Hot
Waco - (3:58) 65 BPM
Played by: Caski
Review: The debut album from 1-800 Dinosaur sees a wealth of producers associated with the collective provide behind the buttons support for grime MC Trim. That means across the ten tracks, Trim spits over bars from James Blake, Airhead, Happa, Klaus, Bullion, Boothroyd and Dan Foat. Blake and Trim have plenty of form of course, with the producer delivering killer Harmonimixs of the MC back in 2012. A recent Trim 12" on 1-800 Dinosaur set the tone nicely for this album, and Happa's colourful bassline and shuddering drums on "Before I Lied" provides an early highlight as does "Man Like Me." This cut sees Trim trading blows with a super, stripped down production from Airhead, whilst Jim Blake's production on "RPG" recalls his dizzying early work for Hessle and Hemlock. Full marks to the whole crew!

Man Like Me - (2:57) 65 BPM Hot
Review: James Blake temporarily downs tools as a melancholic sub-pop crooner to pick up close to where he left off with releases on Hemlock and Hessle Audio back in the day. For his own 1800 Dinosaur label he invites Javan St. Prix, aka grime MC Trim, to spit rhymes like "I surf waves most men drown in" over Blake-made digital vibraphone tones and syncopated, computer game basslines. On the flip, Trim, who's appeared on Keysound, Butterz and R&S in the past, dons the gloves for a second round called "Man Like Me", this time produced by Airhead who strips the melodies back for shuddering beats and strange, jingling percussion. Fresh.

Big Beats Are The Best
Watch This Beat - (6:29) 152 BPM
Review: LMajor and Corporeal Face aka Local Group follow separate and collective releases on Furthur Electronix and Human Concrete Block with this EP for Lobster Theremin offshoot 10 Pills Mate. Steeped in the sounds of 90s hardcore, Big Beats... brings the listener through an array of sounds and moods. There's the raw break beat and chipmunk vocals of "Watch This Beat", while the release veers into a melange of hip-house vocals and sample-heavy elector on "Work That Thang". Most impressive however is "Rhythmic Trip", where the pair combine mysterious synths with evocative vocals over rolling breaks. Lastly Angel D'lite's remix of "Trip" pushes it towards the intersection of pop and happy hardcore.

Youth Eternal (Trance mix) - (7:02) 150 BPM
Review: Hot on the heels of releases for Chequered Wax and Groove Estate, Eyerate continues to explore old school techno and trance influences with Twenty Angels. "Undone" is an epic affair, with a series of break downs and raw break beats providing the backdrop for atmospheric, all-encompassing melodies. "IDK You" sees the UK producer adopt a different approach, as tough kicks and rasping percussion support repetitive vocal snippets and hypnotic melodies. The title track continues in this direction, with a growing bass and sharp hi-hats fused with ominous, swirling textures, while "Youth Eternal" is a high-paced, Thomas Heckmann-style affair, peppered with gurgling acid lines that paint a vivid sonic picture.

Review: Deep house from the heavily electronic, more leftfield side is the order of the day on this debut long-player from Los Angeles-based Etari. After the obligatory beatless ambient intro, 'Euphoric Disclaimer' comes on like Larry Heard getting a fit of inspiration from listening to a Youngsta CD, the title track is a more floaty, dreamy, Balearica kinda cut, 'Funky Fuchsia' is all stuttered beats, long drawn-out pads and much use of echo/reverb-style FX, and so it goes on... definitely one for home listening rather than the dancefloor, but worth investigating if your house tastes tend towards the more cerebral.

Exploring a percussive, water-rimmed paradise of half soundtrack music half exotica, Spiral Heights even brings with it a collaboration with Lee Scratch Perry in "Bamboo Cross". With parallels to be made with the rhythms heard in the music of Geinoh Yamashirogumi (Akira soundtrack) there is a deftly positive feeling permeating the classic sound of '80s inspired synth music alongside tacit themes invoking Gaia, Japan and a castle somewhere in the clouds. Total dub.

Review: Swaggering out of the cassette-based hinterland, Angel 1 has already issued forth a selection of choice tapes over the past couple of years, fusing together many a disparate electronic style into a surprisingly cohesive whole. So it is as the mysterious artist possibly known as Colin Fields steps up to 1080p with this wild seven-track ride through scattershot ideas and reference points. There are moments of synth-rich calm with a vintage twist, while elsewhere you may get suckerpunched by splats of jungle breaks wrenched into heavy thudding half-step. The ideas dart around the mix, produced with a charming starkness that seems at odds with the murk of most cassette output, and it makes for a standout release.

Now he fires up a new alias for the illustrious Smoke Tape, which journeys through plush and pleasant house-scapes pitched at balmy evenings on dappled balconies. There is a healthy thread of the kind of boogie infection that makes Andras Fox, Ruf Dug or Moon B such a pleasant proposition, but there is also space for some more rambunctious material in amongst the pleasantries. "Inside" should certainly get some pulses racing, but not at the expense of satisfying melodic content.

Review: Vancouver's 1080p goes from strength to strength in its pursuit of the most subterranean styles of electronic music. There's just something about the Pacific North West at the moment! The mysterious Umfang serves up a diverse array of moods, grooves and textures that have us impressed. The spacey deep house of "Beta Librae" and "Quickly and Softly" are similar to Terreke while there's some reductionist, early noughties style minimal house in the form of "Vast" and "Six". Tracks like "Shant" and "Cygnus" delve into more freeform territory but still keep things ultra deep and floaty. Highly recommended.

Review: The rise of Vancouver as a hotbed of off-kilter deep house and electronica, variously inspired by new age, early '90s ambient, tropical rhythms and psychedelia, was one of the stories of 2014. Much of the credit should go to tape and digital outlet 1080p, which - like Vancouver contemporaries Mood Hut - has done much to showcase the City's previously unknown producers. They're at it again here, delivering a typically immersive, tactile and dreamy debut from Neu Balance, AKA producers Sam Beatch and Sebastian Davidson. Rubber Soles is a wondrous concoction; a kind of gently drifting fusion of ultra-deep house, breezy electronics, glitchy rhythms, whispered ambience and experimental interludes. We have a sneaking suspicion we'll be hearing plenty more from them in 2015.

Review: Nine months on from the release of his debut album Club Amniotics, NYC-based dancefloor experimentalist Max McFerren returns to 1080p with a similarly minded sophomore set. Like its predecessor, Lawd Forgive Me is playful, colourful and eccentric, with McFerren serving up a thrill-a-minute blend of dayglo rave stabs, UK garage steppiness, classic house riffs, mangled vocals and energetic, off-kilter rhythms. The result is a fast-paced brimming with ideas, curious samples and, most potently, the relentlessly upbeat attitude of contemporary British bass music. It's difficult to pin down, but that only adds to the album's gleeful, kaleidoscopic charm.

Review: Phoebe Guillemot hails from Vancouver, from where she has snuck out two prior cassette-based albums of wonderfully delirious leftfield electronic tinkerings that delight the mind as they get the toes tapping. From Los Discos Enfantasmes and Pygmy Animals she now graduates to 1080p with a further eleven excursions into lush, vibrant soundscapes steeped in the exotic and earthly and then blasted into the cosmos. From the scratchy bongos and fluttering jungle noises of "Princess Of Cups" to the slow echoing enchantment of "Etwal", the stylistic tropes flow like emerald gloop throughout Houti Kush and the fairy tale sonics don't let up once. It's an evocative and complete artistic vision that should switch many more listeners onto Guillemot's wondrous sound.

Review: Out of the many Dialects that are out there in the music world, this one will be of interest to those who enjoy the swell of abstract ambient electronics coming out of labels such as 1080p. Previously found on Tasty Morsels delivering the Advanced Myth album, the Liverpool-based artist has crafted a wonderful continuous journey that at times marries strumming guitar niceties with delicate, cascading synth notes in a faithful approximation of what 21st century folk music should sound like. The mood can shift in subtle ways, using field recordings to bridge gaps into more moody territory, turning back to serenity at a moments notice with a rich spread of instrumentation to point the way.

Review: Yet more goodness swells out of the 1080p camp as I Am Just A Pupil progresses from a raft of low-key tapes and CDrs over the last couple of years to deliver this album of surreal music reflections layered with speech from all over the place. The 'Siri' sampling opener may well spin you out a touch, but it gets more pleasant and weird as the tracks unfold, matching socially-aimed lifts from documentaries and news reports with gentle piano reflections, drifting by in a collage-like fashion that both informs and makes a point even as it rests easy on the ears.

Review: Kansas City's Brandon Knocke aka Body-san, follows up the great Corporate Interiors release on 100% Silk last year. As 1080p best describe themselves "Shining The Money Ball has a polished, synthetic naturalism.. and gets its sound inspiration from jazz-funk, 1970s & onward library music, and also creates a vague, unspecific but 'perfect crime' cinematic narrative". Particular highlights include the dusty, offbeat soul of the title track, the emotive Larry Heard influenced deepness of "One Million Brazilian Dollars", the '80s pop inflected vibe of "Wet Bar" and the lush ambinet house of the gorgeous closing track "Koko Chats Online".

Dreams Of Jupiter - (2:07) 59 BPM
Review: Vancouver's 1080p has brought up plenty of Canadian house talent over the last few years, first by releasing LNRDCROY's debut LP, and then offering a sublime selection of cassettes by artists like Moon B, SETH, or Feingold. This time they're back with a 12" by newcomer Ex-Terrestrial, who proceeds to drop four absolutely soul-warming house track that contain a distinctively British vibe to them - but not int he current sense of the word, we mean what British house and techno used to sound like back in the 90's, that is, exploratory and cinematic. "Paraworld" is a jittery slice of absolute brain dynamite thanks to its luscious pads, while "Aletheia" chucks in a load of slithering breakbeats among the stomping bass drums and deep-throated baselines. Then you also have the sparse and aqueous drones of "Dreams Of Jupiter", followed by the slo-mo jungle rhythm called "Blue Smoke". a great little EP, coming very highly recommended.

Review: Damon Eliza Palermo has previously appeared on Ital's Lover's Rock label, bringing forth an admirable bundle of loose ambient and forward-thinking new age music. All of his sounds are bound in a mytical sort of coating, something that is loudly heard on Clouds Of David. The beats that trickle out of the lonesome pads five these tracks the right sort of movement, and although they are in no making them into bog room dance hits, they could easily be mixed and mashed up with more beat-heavy tunes. It's magical, it's fresh, and it's kind of perfect for this time of the year. Top draw.

Review: Originally released in 2016 on local imprint 1080p, Vancouver duo You're Me recorded this album of downbeat experimental grooves on Salt Spring Island - located in British Columbia's Gulf Islands. Comprised of Yu Su and Scott Johnson Gailey, this is grainy and lo-fi music in the tradition of recent Vancouver electronica. Canada's third largest city that has given us revered labels in recent times such as Mood Hut and Pacific Rhythm, with their distinct aesthetic dictated by a slow life amidst the region's beautiful scenery and temperate climate. From hazy ambient house and drifting dub techno experiments, through to psyched-out soundscapes and a bit of drone, it's all rather captivating in its diversity.

Scorpio Moon - (7:19) 53 BPM
Review: NAP is the latest artist to appear on Vancouver cassette/digital label 1080p. To begin with, it sounds like he is going to follow in the footsteps of Moon B and Scientific Dreamz of U: "Urban Fare" is a deep, glitchy techno track with echoes of both early 90s Warp and early 00s Mille Plateaux. "Donat Forget the Records" meanwhile, emulates the work of modern house labels like Mood Hut and its crisp drums and warm synths could even be a modern take on Prescription or Balance. From there on in, the release shifts sound radically; "U19" is a tough, bruising percussive techno affair while "Contra III" is a dark, tunneling affair in the finest Dozzy / Mulero vein.

Review: Some people like their jungle funky, upbeat and packed full of reggae sampling. Others might prefer what Effra has to offer here, namely jungle that's nested in dark, atmospheric soundscapes with apocalyptic connotations and an impending sense of dread. All four of these are dastardly and eerie, each distinctly ominous yet still sufficiently different to one another. The acid build up and sudden switch of 'Genesis' makes it the pick of the bunch and we dare you not to get gassed by its vibrantly rough junglist vibes. Wicked bits.

Review: Drum and bass lynchpin Outer Heaven takes a break from his Proximity Records duties, and lands most vertically on the young and rising 117 imprint. This is pure neo jungle at its best, no nonsense and no dubstep infusions, just pure breaks-ridden madness for the heads. "Shogun", possibly a homage to Friction's mythical label, is hard, metallic jungle stepper, while "Creation" goes more minimal, stripped-back and reminds us of material by artists like DBridge or Alix Perez. "Beneath The Surface" sounds like a Metalheadz bullet circa-1997, and "Crazy Steppin" pays homage to the sort of jump-up pioneered by the almighty Johnny L. Hot and heavy - recommended!

Review: Next up from the fantastic CAPITOL 1212 we have two very interesting creations, celebrating the sounds of dancehall and reggae on the airwaves. We kick off with the sounds of 'Where I'm At', featuring guest vocals from both Donald D and Daddy Scotty, providing rave-ready flows over an easy skanking instrumental structure. The B-side however is where things get interesting as we hear Daddy Scotty let loose a rapid fire burst of bars toasted lyricism over two classic reggae riddims, replicating the sounds of a live radio set of 'Live On BBC Radio'. Very cool indeed!

Review: Residing somewhere in the hazy gap that exists between house, electronica and free jazz, France's Ramzi has, so far, hit 1080p, RVNG INTL, Canada's Mood Hut, and now 12th Isle, known for their marvelous artworks. P?ze-Piton is the producer's third album to date, and her mystical shades of atmospherics have evolved into tropical shades of house that flutter up and down, expanding and contracting at every turn. 'Outsider house' would typically describe these tunes effectively, but we prefer to think of it as experimentation with rhythm, such as "Fly Timoun", or the gentle percussion waves of "Brazili". Whatever your taste and/or pleasure, Ramzi is seemingly capable of providing you with anything and everything. A tip, for sure!

Square Miso
Square Miso (Reprise) - (3:09) 76 BPM
Review: Since this EP dropped on vinyl earlier in the year, the sizeable title track has become one of the most ubiquitous peak-time anthems around. That's not meant as a criticism; few do rush-inducing musical moments quite like Dusky, and "Square Miso" is one of their most euphoric productions to date. It's something of a retro-futurist treat, with colossal piano riffs and dewy-eyed vocal samples riding thunderous drums and a booming, mind-altering bassline. For extra spine-tingling pleasure, check out the beat-free "Reprise" version, which wisely emphasizes the "Strings of Life" style pianos and synthesized strings, and the warehouse-friendly, Inner City style throb of "LF10".

Review: 1985 Music was founded by Alix Perez a year or two ago and, since then, has rapidly become one of the premier destinations for forward-thinking sonics that inhabit the 85-170bpm spectrum. With a fresh roster including Monty, Submarine and Perez himself, Edition 2 is a showcase of both the producers and sounds that Alix has in his orbit. There are too many outstanding tracks to recount here, but 'Drones' by Cesco stands out as one of the most creative: a subby, stepping halftime cut with an ingenious drum pattern. There's weighty rollers, too, including 'Swayed' by Bredren and 'Good To Me' by Perez and Monty, both of which are sublime examples in minimal construction. A truly sick collection of tracks.

Review: It's seemingly an impossibility for the 1985 crew to deliver a lacklustre release, with Submarine giving us an immediate injection of high octane energy on this sizzling display. We open up with the raucous reesey goodness of 'Back Then', a real crunchy combination of tidy percussion and unpredictable bass scrunches. Following this, the high energy levels continue to grow as more of those stunning electronic synth sweeps roll into view on 'Show Me The Way', with 'Physical' then giving us another bite of techy flavour. We then close the project out with a listen to 'Mint Lips', a face wrecker of a riddim, taking unique vocal processing and scattergun synthesiser stabs to bring us a truly mesmerising display of original drum and bass innovation. Awesome work!

Review: Work hard, rave hard; Jack Workforce continues to dish out next-level tackle with 'Care & Consideration'. Jumping over to Alix's 1985 for the occasion, it's four of his finest cuts to date. 'Show You Something' with Javeon has a vocal hook and dark groove that's up there with 'Oblique' as a serious soulful vocal anthem. 'Apply The Breaks' is a savage slab of 23rd century jazz that nods respectfully to the likes of Krust while 'Don't Tell Part 2' takes off where the first one left us on last year's 'Late Night Soundtrack'... Bewildered by pure roller energy. Finally 'Reasons', another vocal led one with a really interesting riff texture and super detailed drums. Exceptional.

Review: Visages has been one of the big A&R success stories of Perez's 1985 Music, and this four-track EP is the next evolution of his techy, hybrid sound. Dark Guru is titled with an absolute gem of a dubstep track, a loping 140 monster which oozes force and sophistication through waves of undulating low frequencies; a true class act that simply deserves to be heard in a club. The rest of the EP is 170, and the highlight is 'Egotrip', a devilishly sharp minimal roller that stays clear of boring tropes and instead blends guttural bassline sweeps with jagged synth stabs and biting percussive touches. 'Yalda' is also obscenely good, as a crunchy groove beds down amongst soulful vocal notes and shuddering basslines. Best in class.

Having previously appeared on the launch of DRS's Space Cadet label in December 2018, Dogger and Mindstate come correct with their debut EP on 1985 with four powerful soulful cuts. Rolling deep with Liam Bailey, each track hits with authenticity and realness; "Broken Home" has a Conrad and Bukem feel as Bailey flexes his broadest of ranges, "Love Is The Law" lashes out with big splashes of jazz while "Rebels" touches on a little dub warmth before "So So" closes with the sultriest showdown of the set. Easily the most sensual record to land on 1985 so far. Stunning.

Described by the man himself as a "platform rooted primarily in the 85 / 170 BPM bracket but also going beyond with no rules applied," the label sets a high bar in the quality stakes with this Elephant Dreams 12" from Perez himself. Taut moody rolling ruffage is the order of the day on the title cut, one of two collaborations with Skeptical, whilst "Had I Known" offers a more hopeful vibe before a dank mood descends on "STNKR". This broken slab of bass science is the highlight here, though the closing brittle jungle of Skeptical co-production "Room 667" isn't far behind!
