Review: Viper are a big, bad and dangerous label and their 2021 annual is an expression of what makes their output so potent. This whole LP is unafraid to be dancefloor heaviness in an approachable sense, and the whole extended roster has turned up, from label boss Futurebound to Murdock, Blaine Stranger and more. 'Dragon' by the latter is especially good, as a foghorn influenced bass node curls its tendrils amidst a a synthy forest of organic ambience and excellent production. Cyantific and Bl4ck Crowz also impress on 'Waiting 4 U', which stomps its feet in a petulance that's less childish and more chidingly sick, a true festival anthem for sure. The album is a must-listen for all those who rate the Viper side of drum & bass.

Review: Aussie bass herbert Shockone has always been pretty forthright with his angular, spiky sonic science but here we find him delving a little deeper with this 14 track concept album. Still maintaining the savage tonk we know and love him for (the tried and tested mosh anthem "Chaos Theory" and the arm-raising "Age Of Enlightement") but there's some really interesting departures found lurking in the space investigating mix such as psychedelic Justice-style electro drama ("Big Bounce") full strength MC-led Pendulumism ("Lazerbeam") and trembling, glo-stick munch anthemia ("Universus"). Bangers and brain-ticklers; this is a really interesting debut album.

Review: Keeping us vibey and pumped throughout the coldest of months, Viper Recordings get busy with this full spectrum showcase from Deep Notion. All phases of the night covered, the EP opens with the chunky weapon that is the full-fat brusier 'Down On The Dancefloor' and closes with the delicate emotional moment that is 'Right All Along'. In between we see him linking with kindred spirit Captain Bass that fuses some of the most prominent and memorable sounds of Viper's late 2000s game-changing sound and the current switchy jump-up vibes. Killer EP.

Review: Crystalline sonic euphoria Koven continue to fly the flag for emotional electronic music with this stunning string-drenched roller. Folly Rae's vocals are delivered with emphatic authenticity while the organic beats sway with a soft militancy. Instant end-of-night hug sessions abound. For a sense of peaktime activity head for The Prototypes' remix: turbo-charged D&B that retains every ounce of the original's heartfelt beauty. Or flip for Habstrakt's remix: rugged drumstep-influenced dubstep where the emotion is galvanised by cutlass-like mid-range bass stabs. Powerful stuff. If you're going to listen to one new track this week, make it "Make It There".

Review: Viper Recordings is one of the premium destinations for dancefloor D&B and whilst its perhaps doesn't fit onto the current trend of minimal sophistication, there's no doubt that a large portion of the scene still love their music hard-hitting and full of synth-based extremism. Giganti is holding up that baton this week and he's doing it in style with a two-part single of fiery proportions. 'Rico Law' is certainly the stand-out of the two, its steppy rhythm reminiscent of Dimension's 'UK' and other similar cuts, a type of hard-hitting percussive construction which always sounds so, so weighty through a sound-system. Wicked single.

Review: With a discography that stretches from Rottun to Disney, US bass merchant AU5 peddles an exciting range of melodic low-end mischief. Coated in huge washes of euphoria, "Crystal Mathematics" is instant 'lighters up' material with all manner of cosmic, dreamy trills and flourishes. "The Reason II" combines deeper, spine-chilling pads and an eerier atmosphere over one of the ugliest basslines Viper have ever released. AU5's message is crystal clear right now.

Review: Viper Recordings have been and continue to be one of the premier destinations for dancefloor-focused D&B, with a wide-ranging roster and serious backing in the form of Matrix & Futurebound. Their latest single is from a brand new artist and Jack Mirror proves himself on this one, with two cuts that radiate quality as much as they sound wicked. 'Reset' is the slower and steppier of the two, a synth-based loper that proceeds with caution but still packs a carefree vibe. The flip is the roller, the dancefloor number and this one is all about the synths: big, Dimension-esque and full of energy. Big single from the new kid on the block.

Review: Back to the true school; Insomiax take us back to their roots with two of Viper's most foundation and classically ground tracks in many years. Paying homage to the UK's most famous and influential rave den The Sanctuary, "One More Time" is a turbine blast to the past with a heavy droning Moving Fusion style bassline while "Origin" takes us even deeper down the jungle rabbit hole. Review: Taken from his debut LP Leap of Faith which is due to drop later this year, Smooth continues his raging storm of furious drum & bass pain on dancefloors around the world with "Drone". Ramping up the neuro pressure with severe jump-up beats for good measure, both the title track and "Kronos" featuring Markoman make for some serious new year speaker smashing. You might be too skint to leave the house this month, but with tunes like this at your disposal, you won't need to. What a blinder.

Review: Fresh from signing to Viper, Mob Tactics get their gully gospel on with this rampant, electrified roller. Gutsy vocals, gutter bass; there's a lot of this type of drum & bass around right now (cheers Sigma and Fresh) but few cuts maintain such a tight balance of airwaves and underground soundwaves. "Return Of The Snitch", meanwhile, is Mob Tactics going back to their roots with a straight-up filth flinger. Stuttering, shifting, snarling; if you're not pulling nasty bass faces to this, you're technically dead.
