Review: Enigmatic supergroup Burial, Four Tet and Thom Yorke reunite with a new age splice of their sound first heard in the Ego / Mirror collaboration of 2011. Revealed as a limited 300 copy vinyl release only available from a set of record store clerks somewhere in Soho, London, Her Revolution/His Rope (as if right on time) dramatises the modern day gender role in bringing 2020 and its forlorn soundtrack to an end. Yorke's voice wavers in the distance as ever while crumpled noise floors of Burial seemingly give cushion to the soft percussion and shimmering melody lines of a Four Tet's making. Capture the moment.

Review: Given that his sound has now been referenced by countless imitators, it's testament to Burial's enduring appeal that the announcement of a new EP on a Sunday in February was enough to shake the online music press out of their collective stupor. As an EP it more than stands up to his previous work, and it may even be better than last year's Street Halo EP - where the brilliance of the title track left the EP quite top-heavy, there's no such complaints on Kindred. If UK garage was the touchpoint for his earlier releases, this EP sees Burial further developing a sound that has few obvious points of comparison, whether it's the savage, gnarled bassline of the title track, or the shambling house of "Loner", characterized by its hollowed out arpeggio and ambient crackle. But it's "Ashtray Wasp" that provides the most breathtaking moment, seeing the producer using the distinct musical language he's created and bringing confident melodic elements into play. Of course such descriptions seem trivial when trying to describe this EP - even for Burial it's far beyond what his peers and imitators could ever imagine making.

Review: Keeping with themes of continuum is Burial's return to Keysound backed by a Blackdown VIP dub and remix of the track "Arklight" by Joseph Whittle's Heatmap project. For Burial, it shows a '90s-inspired and hopeful sound from an artist revelling in the skylit clouds this time opposed to the dusty streetscapes of his known soundworld. "Space Cadet" sounds exactly that, with spirals of Asiatic chimes and new age synths - peppered by crackles and white noise - matched by the rave and post-hardcore melodies of "Dark Gethsemane". Keeping the EP firmly rooted on terra firma though is the hype dub cut "This Journey" by Blackdown - preaching more of a positive message - next to the boxy claps and spiralling arpeggios of that Heatmap remix. An EP for the times: Shock Power Of Love.
