Review: Don't Be Afraid sub-label DBA Dubs pulls out an intriguing single, pitching tastings of Bristol bass, middle-eastern themes and watery tabla rhythms of D-Malice with Canada's house faithful Basic Soul Unit. This D-Malice release, somewhat of a surprise inclusion to the label, follows music by Claws For?, beat fusionist Kelpe, Adjowa and No Corner and Idle Hands artist Lily. Both tracks fit a house tempo and it's the percussion of the original that's the real hook, while BSU's thumping remixing delivers a menacing Vermona kick drum with swathes of heavy, dub techno-spheres. A versatile release.
Review: Under-the-radar label Atjazz has been steadily putting out deep house scorchers for quite some time now, and not only are they productive but they've also got a skill at sussing out new talent from all over. For their latest instalment, newbies Kid Fonque and D-Malice step into the limelight with "All This Time", a shady house excursion that fits somewhere between tech and deep, pumping and lo-fi - a true hybrid jam for the floor! Thrown in, there's also a shorter radio edit for headphone playback, a stripped instrumental, and a rougher cut featuring the man Clive De Lowe. Bang.
Review: UK's D-Malice is back, this time on the esteemed Atjazz imprint; which can always be relied upon to deliver the real proper deep stuff! Starting out with "#87" which slowly builds the mood in restrained but cleverly executed fashion; this emotive groove is tight! The title track "Phases" goes for a more percussive, textured and tribal vibe which soon builds in layers and atmosphere: all building up to a nice crescendo. Finally "Phases (Expressive Dub)" is definitely the most straight ahead offering; a moody and brooding journey track which will mix in well with the current status quo of epically deep tech house music, guaranteed.
