How Beautiful (feat Alexander Krampe) - (3:17) 94 BPM
Review: Jerker Kluge and Florian Reidl's Hi Fly Orchestra first popped up in 2005, and ever since has quietly impressed with its breezy, occasionally summery takes on classic, swingtime-era jazz (and, on occasions, Latin jazz). This third full-length, their first since 2008, continues their explorations into Blue Note-inspired territory. There's enough variety to impress - contrast the sun-bright samba of "Sambinha" and baggy big band soul of "I Got Hop" with the intricate flutes of "Forro" and fluid "How Beautiful" - while the playing is, naturally, impeccable throughout. It's got an old-fashioned feel, all right, but that's the point; this is the sort of thing that will transport you back to a bygone age of jazz.

Like A Virgin - (5:09) 95 BPM
Review: Jerker Kluge and Florian Riedl's Hi-Fly Orchestra have earned a strong reputation for all-acoustic jazz, Latin and samba based shows. Here on the Love EP they want to show their soft side, and so we get their own takes of four pop classics. Lenny Kravitz's debut "Let Love Rule" get given a fruity vintage soul makeover, "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye sounds like it was recorded in the 70s, "Purple Rain" by Prince appears to visit Herb Alpert on Ipanema beach in 1967 and lastly, Madonna's "Like A Virgin" becomes a brassy, swaggering lounge boogie.

Review: Nightmares On Wax relaunched DMC's 'Back To Mine' series after a 10-year absence in January, and now next to slide into the selector's hot seat are chart-bothering pop/indie-dance duo Jungle. They've curated an impressively varied selection of downtempo grooves that runs the gamut from the contemporary jazz of Kamaal Williams and Mansur Brown to the psych-pop of LA hopefuls The Marias, the Balearic disco of Admin's 'Space Cadet', the lo-fi George Harrison vibes of Paul Cherry's 'Like Yesterday', the deep tropical house of DrumTalk's 'Red Haze' and the sunny Afro-funk of Inflo's 'No Fear'. A whimsical, engaging collection that's best served whole for maximum effect.

Review: Jungle Cakes always tend to put out music that rests on the foundations of UK underground, the cross-over influences of soul, reggae, jungle and D&B. it's always a fresh sound and it always brings up connotations of Boomtown, free parties and sunny afternoons. This is a monster album curated by Aries and Kelvin 373, who have taken tracks both old and new to form a banging compilation. Bou nails it on 'Music Takes Me Higher', a rustic revisit to classic jungle sounds; Aries and Nicky Blackmarket roll things out in a tight way on 'Champion'; and Chimpo slams the brakes on 'DidDieDoThat'. We don't know the answer to that, but we do know this is fat. Big ups.

Review: When operating under the V's Edits alias, re-edit maestro Valique can always be relied upon to bring the goods. It's little surprise, then, to find out that his latest collection of fresh cut-jobs - an epic affair featuring no less than 24 tracks - is packed to the rafters with high-grade fare. We don't have enough space to list all of the highlights, but we'd suggest checking out his rolling revision of Lee Dorsey's "Night People", the low-slung disco-funk heaviness of the Brass Construction rework ("Gotta Do It"), the intergalactic disco deepness of the Marvin Gaye revision ("Funky Space"), the lightly tooled-up, slowly unfurling take on Tom Browne's "Funkin For Jamaica" and the sweeping, string-laden disco brilliance of "Miracle (V's Edit)".

Review: With Hell Yeah out of Italy now basing themselves in Berlin and chasing that imaginary Balearic sun - this Buena Onda Balearic Beats 2021 compilation sees the label deliver a bevvy of unreleased tunes and remixes. With global content coming from the likes of Australian producer Kayroy (who appeared on the label in 2020 with his Imaginary Expeditions EP) - hooking up with Jaspar Robinson in the star-strung "Satellite - you'll find warm and percussive synth remixes from Max Essa alongside some loose joints from The Mechanical Man. Also catch Chris Coco & Micko Roche's undeniable "What Is Love" (that guitar, those pipes) next to the percussive, broken beat and vocoded sounds of "The Healing Place" by Relative. Hell Yeah - get to know.

Review: Paper Disco's 'Trash The Wax' series reaches its ninth installment, meaning you've probably got some inkling as to the kind of leftfield-leaning electronic disco grooves that make up most of the album already. That's not to say there's not plenty of variety on offer, though: Dan Wainwright's Beloved-esque 'Take It Easy', for instance, is quite a long way from the rolling, jazz-tinged deep house of J Kara's 'Talk To Me', and quite a long way again from the cosmic/Italo throb of James Rod & Aleito's 'Raum 909'. Jahn Solo's 'Dance For Me' is the one cut here that could be classed as 'trad-style' - otherwise, this is an album that will please those interested in exploring contemporary disco's outer fringes.

Review: Nearly 30 years in the game and the Paper crew don't show any signs of slowing down in their old age just yet, as they bring us this 22-track collection that, just in case the title wasn't clear, showcases the best of their disco/nu-disco output from the past 10 years or so. Featuring cuts from the heavy-hitting likes of Yam Who?, Bill Brewster, Late Night Tuff Guy, Fingerman, Richard Norris, Andy Buchan, Flash Atkins, Girls Of The Internet and James Rod, you shouldn't need us to tell you how good this compilation is. But just to be clear, it's really very, very good indeed...

Review: What more can we possibly say about nu-disco producer Valique and his two-year bootleg/edit/mash-up blitzkreig that we haven't already said? Listening back over these 31 offerings it becomes apparent that this is simply the soundtrack to one seriously mighty party. There are simply just so many dancing-on-tables moments here (we'll let him away with some of the shockers) including the grooved up DM cover "Personal Jesus" by Johnny Cash, the surreal, intoxicating deep disco take on Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" and the dreamy paradise melodies of "Still You". Here's to the next couple of years!

Review: A two track sampler from the forthcoming album Music For Jazz Dancers, due in May on Freestyle. These two lesser known jazz dance classics come from the 'in the box' selections of DJs Adrian Gibson and Perry Louis, who have been running the Messin' Around London club session at Camden's legendary Jazz Cafe for 14 years. First track "Cherokee", by Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass, is a storming version of Ray Noble's jazz standard with Dianne Reeves' vocal delivery reminding us of Ella Fitzgerald. Next up is "Kon Djab Djigidi'" from French pianist Mario Canonges, which is a full-on piano-led, Latin-tinged monster that'll have you attempting those back flips in your Spats before you know it!

Review: 14 years have passed since Benji B and Judah established their monthly Deviation parties in London. This fine compilation celebrates the club's legacy and sound, which famously touched on all manner of soul-fired musical styles whilst keeping one eye (and both feet) on the dancefloor, with Benj B selecting cuts that never failed to rock the party. Expect a mixture of skewed, bass-heavy beats (Dorian Concept, James Blake, 00Genesis), heady instrumental hip-hop (Waajeed, Damn Funk remixing Baron Zen), Afro-funk (K Fimpong), peak-time UK bass mutations (Pearson Sound, Martyn, Mala), high-grade deep house (Gilb'r remixing Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish) and a smattering of genuine scene anthems (Detroit Experiment, Maurice Fulton's remix of Alice Smith, DJ SPen presents DJ Technic).

Review: Rita Maia is currently a busy woman, presenting radio (including a weekly Resonance FM show also called Sine Of The Times), DJing everywhere (aside from holding down a residency at the Notting Hill Arts Club) and now releasing albums too! This 11-song collection isn't a mix album per se, although the tracks do cleverly flow together. The overall vibe is gentle, almost brittle, micro-house-meets broken beat: perfect for hazy post-club mornings. Highlights include the teardrop beats of Dfranklin's "Whole", the melancholic rain-soaked 2-step of VVV's "Lost & Found" and the tropical comedown of BD1982's "The Wave Chamber".
