Review: Ed Cartwright and Leon Oakey's first collaborative compilation is one of the few we've come across to eschew a narrow focus on one genre or style in favour of celebrating an under-documented era, namely UK dance music's eclectic, impossible to pigeonhole 'post-rave' period in the mid 1990s. Given that lots of great music was released then, it's a great idea. The tracklist boasts a lot of very good cuts, including a near impossible to find Richard D James oddity (as Strider B), a couple of killer Richard H Kirk-related numbers, some stretched-out, acid-fired early morning psychedelia (Thunderhead The Word By Eden), classic IDM gems (Xeper, the Black Dog), a dash of dubby, post-bleep brilliance (Liquid Son, Rotor) and a clutch of hybrid deep house/tech-house tracks (Max, Fretless AZM, Herbert).

Review: Over the last 12 months, Mixmag has been dipping into their archive of cover-mount CDs and making the mixes available digitally for the first time. The latest set to get this treatment is a 2014 mix from Seth Troxler, when the popular artist was at the peak of his powers. Recorded live in one take with no overdubs or post-mix editing trickery, the Illusion Noveau sees Troxler move from the creepy ice cream van tones of Windy & Carl's 'Carnivale' to the steelpan-fired brilliance of Steven Encinas' 'Disco Illusion', via heady neo-dub (Pepe Bradock), next-level minimalist jazz (Ricardo Villalobos remixing Royal Dust), glitch-house (Matthew Herbert), Afro-house (Obafunke), wonky late night house (nis own collab with the Martinez Brothers) and strobe-lit neo-Italo insanity (Todd Terje's rework of Simon Baker).

Part Two

Non-Stop - (5:49) 121 BPM
Shuffler - (8:06) 122 BPM Hot
Review: Long before he became one of experimental electronic music's most storied artists, Matthew Herbert delivered a string of killer EPs on Phono showcasing his uniquely glitchy and off-kilter take on deep house. Happily, Herbert has finally decided to make these mid 1990s 12" singles available digitally for the first time. "Part Two", which was first released in 1996, begins with the ultra-deep thrust of "Deeper", where mutilated vocal samples and pots and pans percussion hits rise above a jazzy, U.S style deep house groove. The arguably superior "Non-Stop" is formidably sub-bass heavy, with thrillingly cut-up samples and crunchy machine drums clustering around a speaker-busting bassline. Finally, "Shuffler" is a deliciously jazzy and swinging number laden with woozy chords and the kind of fluid electric piano solos that would make Kerri Chandler cheer.

Review: London/Bristol based tech house institution celebrates a decade in the business. They've seen a few faces and phases, tech-wise or otherwise but at the end of the day remained consistent in their pursuit of quality grooves. Alex Jones and Jamie Russell present some great music here and there are many highlights. From electronica legends such as Warp's Luke Vibert, minimal house pioneer Matthew Herbert (with the deep and dusty microhouse of "Downgraded") as well as techno's one time enfant terrible Neil Landstrumm through to new favourites such as Swedish hypnotic techno hero Sebastian Mullaert (the tunnelling "Shadowed By I"), Italian hardware mavericks The Analogue Cops plus up and comers Yaleesa Hall x Malin Genie with the banging' "Buchan Trap". We applaud the label for their ability to keep on the pulse of the ever changing electronic music landscape and heres to another ten years.

Review: "Deeper" was originally featured on Matthew Herbert's Part Two EP, way back in 1996. Since then, that particular 12" has become something of an in-demand item, with the lead cut naturally attracting the most attention. This issue of "Deeper" contains Herbert's original in all its glory - think loopy, low-slung, jazz-flecked hypo-house with woozy, early morning breakdowns - and a fresh remix from label-hopping producer Stuart Li under his familiar Basic Soul Unit alias. He subtly beefs up and speeds up the track, adding some Detroit-influenced keys and fizzing new percussion. The result is a tasty techno revision that pays due reverence to Herbert's thrilling original.

DJ Kicks (continuous mix) - (1:21:10) 121 BPM
Review: Some DJs use the opportunity of a DJ Kicks mix to showcase the eclectic nature of their record collections, while others see it as a chance to give an airing to the dancefloor records that have inspired them over the years. Seth Troxler's selection sits somewhere in between. On the one hand, there are impeccable jazz and downtempo moments from the likes of Sun Ra, Herbert (as remixed by Phil Parnell) and DJ Koze, whose "Bodenweich" is an undeniably atmospheric, off-kilter delight. On the other hand, Troxler has picked out some genuinely brilliant, mostly US-centric house selections; deep, soulful and bumpin' fare from the likes of Butch, Kerri Chandler, Jasper Street Company, Mood II Swing and Derrick Carter.

Apparat - "Black Water" (DJ Koze remix) - (5:19) 89 BPM
Review: Remix compilations can be a little hit-and-miss, but this one - gathering together five years of eccentric and often inspired reinterpretations from German veteran DJ Koze - is anything but. Koze often saves his best work for the remix domain, delivering imaginative reworks that take the original material into surprising new places. So, Herbert's "If Only" is turned into a sparse chunk of atmosphere-rich late night deep house, Caribou's "Found Out" is blessed with a new sense of wonky, left-of-centre purpose, and Zwanie Johnson's "Golden Song" is given a decidedly Balearic, beatless makeover. Highlights are plentiful, with Koze's dubby, low-slung afro-jazz reinterpretation of Soap & Skin's "Marche Funebre" standing out.

My Orphaned Son
Dntel - "My Orphaned Son" (Die Vogel remix) - (6:12) 126 BPM
Herbert - "It's Only" (DJ Koze remix) - (7:37) 118 BPM Hot
Review: Providing a choice pair of remixes for the Pampa imprint, Koze enlists himself and Die Vogel to perform surgery on tracks from Herbert and Dntel respectively. Die Vogel's version of "My Orphaned Son" is an endearing excursion into pastoral house music, where music box chimes meet with strummed bass, stoic brass and simmering strings in a purposeful and finely balanced track founded on club dynamics but expressed through a richer tapestry of sounds. Koze's version of "It's Only" finds him in brooding mood, as largely depicted by the prowling organ line. There's all the goodness (or should that say weirdness?) that you want from a Koze jam, playing on emotions with unconventionality like only he can.
