Review: Old studio buddies Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana have previously proved adept at delivering dreamy, musically rich deep house and downtempo grooves, so it's no surprise to find that their latest full-length outing is entitled Dream Landscape. It's a fitting title all told, with the pair variously mixing and matching colourful synth sounds, summery chords, squelchy bass, yearning piano lines, dubby basslines and atmospheric electronics with electro, deep house, post-dubstep and downtempo beats. Throw in occasional nods to jazz-house (see the super-deep 'Shine Through'), darker tech-house (the clandestine 'Jackin') and pleasingly horizontal ambient ('Blurred Vision') and you have a genuinely superb set that entertains from start to finish.

Review: It's a while since we last hear from Owen Jay. In fact, our records suggest that this is first solo single that the serial collaborator (and Melchior Sultana studio soulmate) has released in almost 11 years. Typically, the music he's offered up is woozy, drowsy and ultra-deep. For proof, check opener 'Take Me Deeper (That's Where I Want To Be)', a beatdown style shuffle through trippy minor key Rhodes chords, weighty bass and hushed, intricately programmed percussion. He ups the tempo a little on "Bassjam", wrapping creeping, horror style melodic motifs around another weighty, ocean-deep groove.

Review: The Cement label starts with a bang, headed up by Owen Jay who ditches his usual sleek house gear for some grubbier techno fare (but not at the expense of the groove). His "Stabs" is a perfect slice of dungeon techno, with ample textural depth to stand out in the mix. Molegrip takes a slower, creeping dub approach on "Kaorumba", while CMNT lets a little colour into the mix with some submerged, strafing Motor City stabs over a reduced techno tick, and then Cyan 341 brings the closest thing to a house beat on "Soft Device", fleshing the track out with lingering notes and an overall melancholic mood.

Review: Those Maltese bad boys Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana are back on their trusty Batti Batti steed with another sublime drift through velvety-smooth deep house cuts for discerning heads. "August" lays the pads on thick, making the groove all that sharper when they drop out, but it's not long before that filter opens back up to let the blissful tones back into the mix. As the name suggests "Acid Carpaccio" is a rougher concern, but it's still finished off with a classy finish and one eye on the deep end of the dance. "Smoked" notches up the swing and aims skywards with an uplifting, contemplative jam like this formidable duo have forged their name on.

Review: Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana's track Contrasts featuring singer Mykle Anthony which was originally released on BBR07 on Kiss The Sun EP receives the remix treatment from the Spanish Brothers, Dubbyman & Above Smoke. Both tracks have the distinct Deep Explorer Sound of real depth and warm grooves.

Review: The split release focus of Batti Batti has served it well so far, so it's little surprise to find the label's first of the year, Tribal Roots, draws for cuts from four different production units. Jay opens proceedings with his fellow Maltese producer Melchior Sultana whose "Tribal Roots" is augmented well by the percussive talents of Antoine. Further Batti Batti treats come from label regulars 1Dan and Marco Negra, whilst Rai Scott makes her bow with the suitably titled "Depth Of The Ocean" which might just be the pick of the four here!

Review: Owen Jay's Batti Batti label presents their fifth EP, another split artists offering. Anyone with a firm grasp of contemporary deep house will recognise Deymare's name and that should be enough to draw you into an EP filled with redeeming production qualities. The Finnish producer opens proceedings with "Episode 2" a rippling and crisp house cut that sets the tone nicely. Label boss Owen Jay crosses swords with regular production partner and compatriot Melchior Sultana for "Moog Mood," a wonderfully laid back saunter through musically rich house music and it must be said a subtly devilish bassline that no doubt informed the title. Later there is much to savour in Saverio Celestri and MP's respective contributions with the latter's "Tension" a wonderfully lopsided slab of punch drunk beat down.
