Review: Vital makes some of the nastiest beats around and he's back now on Audio Addict with a release that's decidedly dark, featuring lots of monochromatic basslines and pumping, remorseless vibes. 'Steppin' is one of our favourites just for its precise, stepping percussive line that comprises lots of little sounds all interwoven together, and features a sample from Flowdan's 'Welcome to London'. 'Move' is simpler but bigger, with a rambunctious bassline that ploughs through the range with ease. Nice one.

Review: If you couldn't tell from the previous two editions on Liondub International, perhaps 'Criminal Minds Volume 3' will finally make you realise that Vital is above the law. With beats as brazen as these, he's got more diplomatic immunity than everyone ever involved in the Lethal Weapon franchise put together, and still he continues; the ringtone neck-wringing of 'Compulsion To Kill', the swaggering grunts and classic sample of 'Positive Vibes', the tension and paranoia of 'Good To Me' and ruffneck drama of 'Unorthadox' are all so badass they instantly come with a get out of jail free card. Review: Vital is a drum and bass producer/DJ from Bournemouth, on the south coast of the UK. He has had releases on Subliminal Recordings, Samurai Bass Audio, Bulletproof Recs and Twisted Beatz. The Recognition EP features the wonky bassline action of "London", while "Culture" similarly infuses the street sounds of grime to impressive effect. Stepper "Recognition" has a somewhat dark jump-up vibe reminiscent of the True Playaz sound and "Disconnected" channels that classic techstep/neurofunk style of all on this roller from the darkside.

Review: Landing just in time for his album on Low Down Deep, Vital takes the reigns for the second Criminal Minds edition on Liondub International. This time soundtrack the vicious work of one Pablo Escobar, Vital rifles us through his most fully-charged packets. "The Creeps" is a screamer, "Road Rage" is the aggy piece, "Alternatives" is the gritty sweaty comedown paranoia while "6 Million" takes a very well known sample and wraps it round a tree in a state of pure paste psychosis. Not to be sniffed at.

Review: Vital by name, Vital by nature... "Criminal Minds" sees the young UK producer return to the NYC imprint with the start of an exciting new series. Delving deep into a fat sack of gully, each of these cuts rep Vital at his darkest and most uncompromising. "Criminal Minds" takes the lead with a classic vocal sample and a Serum-style naggy bass riff, "Acid Rocker" goes full-on foghorn fire with its big farty turbine bass roars, "Patterns" adds a little late 90s tech danger in the synths before dropping into an absolute sewer bassline while "Recognise" closes the EP with a little trad jump-up craftmanship. Riffy, addictive and laced with just a touch of soul on the vocal. Killer material; being a criminal has never been so much fun.

Review: Everyone likes a good compilation, right? What's better than having as big a range of artists as possible in one condensed place? It's essentially an album with the ease of listening of a single, so we're all for it. Subliminal have come out with the 2020 edition in their Riddim Return series and it's packed full of bangers, across a range of styles, and it's one of those albums which doesn't try to be cool or sophisticated by chucking in a few fillers for the sake of diversity - it's just hard stuff here. It works great, with Sam Harris' tendency for muscular minimosity coming on loud and clear on Boom Ting, a wickedly devilish and driving roller.

Highlights include the techno-like insistency and of Alex SLK's "Gorillaz", savage tear-out in the form of Vital's "The Game", Zoro's Dread-bass warp wonder session "Buss It", Magenta's MC-fronted bash-about "Purpose", the list goes on and on. Review: Iron Fist is an appropriate name for the label behind this collection of VIPs and, listening through them, you can hear why. This release is a solid envelope of four tunes which demonstrate a serious understanding of jump-up's nastier end, the type of jump-up which some hate but which inspires a passionate love for the genre in others. Jaydan's VIP of Say Nothing is the best example of this, its pointed, jagged-edged basslines are cutting and penetrating at the same time, snappy drums lie underneath and the whole tune is packaged with effortless finesse. Review: The next instalment in the Iron Fist Audio remix series is here and it's four weighty cuts in the style the label has become well known for, with Nu Elementz, Jaydan, Ironlung and Total Recall coming through in style on this one. We especially love the Total Recall remix of Tsuki's 'Deranged', which packs a sweet flowing drum line (mate that snare though...), an addition that carries the whole tune forward and is complimented by a diving, swelling back end that takes no prisoners whatsoever. Jump up big gun Jaydan also performs well here, with a spinning take on synthetic force that inches and stabs its way into your ears. Proper moody this.

Review: Vital's Big and Fat You is coming out on Walking Dead Recordings, and considering how naughty it is there's a definitive chance that it lives up to its name. This is a jump-up influenced release but it's also minimal and stripped back with a noticeable element of industrial sonics, especially in the title tune, which is both eerie and rolling in all the right ways. 'Destroy The Evidence' is the B-side and it's a gargled, chopped up construction of bruising synth lines and stabbing percussive hits. Ohh yes, this one absolutely bangs.

Review: Liondub are celebrating a decade of existence and they're doing a three-part compilation series covering the past, present and future of the label. By definition, then, these series' feature plenty of talent from all across the spectrum and time period of the genre. One of our favourite of the 26 cuts is Bou's VIP of Keep Away, a deliciously double-bass infused number that is both funky and heavy, the ideal combination, and he's flipped up the arrangement here with some precisely placed note changes. There are also features from Vital, Euphonique, Dutta, Marcus Visionary and more, with the overall vibe being one of toughness and power. Top stuff.

Review: Murky Digital are a label who do what their name might suggest in that they release digital murkiness on a regular basis. Black Lagoon is a various artists release that brings together Jaxx, Euphonique, Vital, Damageman and Tarz, all of whom have contributed dastardly naughty tracks. Vital's 'Bank Robbers' is up there with the best of them and it's all about that bassline, a foghorn of groaning, fiery proportions which rattles its way through the arrangement. Damageman also impresses with 'Low Signal', a sub-heavy roller which will please the more minimalistic heads amongst you. Banging stuff.

Review: Bites is a platform from Majistrate and Nu Elementz aimed at showing off some of the baddest jump up and heavier sounds floating around at the moment. This single from Vital is exactly that and is named Baddest of the Bunch presumably for that very reason, and it definitely lives up to expectations. The title track is a steppy, stripped back and choppy piece of work that vibrates and ricochets all the way down the range, a process repeated until it's drilled into your skull. The flip is similar but somehow even rowdier - top stuff.

Review: Vital has developed a reputation for tough, urban-edged sonics over many years of cultivation and curation, over years of doing his bit for a scene and over years of pumping out very, very good music. He's diverse in his capabilities and this single sees him nailing once more his jump up-ier side, something we're definitely very keen on, especially when it's on a label like Low Down Deep. This release is wicked and 'Beg Steal & Borrow' is a highlight, with a snapping percussive line forming around its inching, creeping basses and eerie background ambience. Top stuff right here.

Review: Vital and Subway Soundz are experienced purveyors of roughshod sounds and this newest single from them both is no exception, as both sides are designed and purpose made for dancefloor damage. 'Clicking Cuffs' opens with a sprawling, rolling drum line that gets the head nodding and the feet moving, its momentum builds and builds before releasing on the drop into a stabby array of force and propulsion. 'Notorious' is wispier but still packs a sharp percussive edge complete with Biggie samples and a stabby bassline that's permeated by guttural funk and industrial semantics. Proper stuff here.

Review: Liondub have been on an absolute tear recently, with a slew of top-class dancefloor-orientated releases, all of which straddle that urban-edged divide between jungle, jump-up and beyond. Vital has been around for a while now and has more than proven his production ability, this single adds to that and it does so in style. 'Animals' is packed full of dirty stabs, it's bouncy and infectious and carries you with it the whole way through. 'Take Me Home' is similar but even naughtier, with a squelchy back end and a constant sense of penetration and force. Wicked.

Review: Forget your daft screechy dubstep variant of the same name, Sub-liminal deal strictly in proper riddims. Wobbly riddims, fat riddims, stinking riddims, gully riddims. They have done for almost five years now, and this new Riddim Return collection is a reminder of just how much ground they cover, how many super talented darksmiths they work with and how much skin of yours their releases will melt. Highlights on this 50 track strong collection (yes, 50!) come from every angle but you'd be mad not to lick a shot from Agro & Raz on their melted bass weird-out "Ah Like It", do air trumpet to Warhead's "Cop Killa" or get wonked the heck out by Leaf's concrete steps on "Hold Up". Review: Vital is back in your line of sight this week with this stinker of an EP, one that slots right into the foghorn trend taking the scene by storm at the moment, so if you're into your gully rollers this will be an EP for you. It's five tracks long and every single one of them slaps, with a no holds barred approach to creating grating basses and skipping drums lines that are tailor made for the dance. Review: Pow! We haven't had a second to recover from his Low Down Deep double slammer "Curiosity / Struggle" and the big V man is back once again. This time firing shots on Walking Dead, it's a feisty five pack of dangerous dark funk that ranges from the rolling breaks and dubby elements of "Crucified" to pure warped, early Clipz-style wobble on "Admit It". Other highlights include the harmonic drone on "Wu Tang Sword Fights", the knuckle scuffing filth and grit of "Angry" and of course the funk fusion and cheeky break rolls of "Cold Like Penguins". Review: "Curiosity" may well have famously killed the cat but it definitely won't kill your dancefloor. Not with drums that rattle so raffishly on the fills and builds and a hook that you'll be humming all the way to cat home. "Struggle" follows and, once again, it totally belies its title... This isn't the sound of a skirmish but more of a total gullied up love in where everyone's invited and there's more than enough gritty bassline flab for us all to grab onto. We've said it before, we'll say it again... Vital by name, vital by nature.

Review: This release honestly doesn't mess around. It carries a serious sense of potency despite its clear lack of sophistication, because D&B of this type simply isn't about sophistication, it's about making something so filthy the audience won't even understand what hit them. Vital has certainly accomplished that here, I mean just have a listen to the glitched out, synth-based badassery that is 'Hangman Posse', a beautifully spacious tune that still manages to make you feel like you've been attacked by a dog. This is a crazy release from start to finish.
