Freestyle 4 Funk 9 (Compiled by Timewarp) #Downtempo
Timewarp / Various
Funky Destination - "Deep Into Brasil" - (4:11) 87 BPM
Beat Ride - "Silent Moments" - (4:50) 67 BPM Hot
Review: As previously mentioned on these pages, Timewarp Music's latest compilation comes in four volumes. This week, following #funk, #disco and #tropicaldub installments, we're in a #downtempo mood as label boss Timewarp Inc gathers together 16 very fine jams from the lower-paced side of the street. Highlights for yours truly include the hazy, driftaway neo-psych of Niles Philips' 'Hidden In A Starfield', the simple reggae groove of Groove Monkz's 'Promised Land' and Zamali's Massive Attack-like 'Zamali' but with influences spanning Balearica, trip-hop, jazz fusion and more, there's plenty to enjoy here for those that are watching their BPMs...

Prosper & Stabfinger - "Popping The Clutch" (feat Jonie D - Timewarp Inc remix) - (4:16) 114 BPM
Timewarp Inc - "Winter Dub" - (5:17) 92 BPM
Review: Timewarp Music's 'Freestyle 4 Funk' series reaches its ninth installment, which (somewhat confusingly) comes in four volumes, subtitled #funk, #disco, #tropicaldub and #downtempo. This is the #tropicaldub selection, for which you can essentially read 'reggae and dub' as label regulars like Prosper & Stabfinger, DJ Laurel, Vito Lalinga, Funky Destination and of course head honcho Timewarp Inc step up to pay tribute to the sound of JA - while still allowing, as with the #funk volume, plenty of scope for fusions with other styles, be they Latin (see DJ Laurel's 'Sambafunk'), Afro (see Lalinga's 'Vrye Denke') or hip-hop and breaks (see P&S's 'Popping The Clutch'), not to mention one fine slab of straight-up funk (Zamali's 'Kings & Queens') and, in the form of 'Simoon', the obligatory weirded-out closer...

Funky Destination - "Damn Soultown" - (4:26) 116 BPM
Played by: Jayl Funk, Umbo
Review: Volume 9 in the series, so regular buyers should have a pretty good idea what to expect by now! For the uninitiated, it's perhaps worth stressing the 'freestyle' part of the title: no mere slavish pastiches of 70s-style funk, the 16 tracks here expand that original blueprint to encompass influences from hip-hop, house, breaks, Afrobeat, reggae and jazz. Highlights for this reviewer include the stuttered jazz-hop of Djazz.OrgOnite's 'Yo Sco', Umbo's fast and furious 'Foolin' Around' and label boss Timewarp Inc's own 'Not Bad Disco' - ironically one the album's most trad-style offerings - but you'll find your own for sure.

Raclette - (4:27) 84 BPM
Never Again (feat Paul Sitter) - (3:04) 51 BPM
Review: Anyone checking out this long-player from Belgian producer Zamali is advised to stick with it, because the first two tracks - the moody trip-hop of 'Raclette' and the Balearic-leaning 'Never Again' - don't really prepare you for what's to come. The first hint you get of the album's overall vibe comes in the form of 'Low Key Factor', a midtempo slab of 'new old' funk-soul, after which 'Downtown Lagos' and 'Kings & Queens' pay tribute to the vibrant Afro-funk scene of the mid-late 70s before 'Chicago Soul' and 'Solar Quest' play us out on a more straight-up funk tip, the former having some rockier elements while the latter is pure Blaxpoitation-style squelch. Something for everyone then, eh?

Review: Belgian producer Zamali made his name with a string of re-edit EPs on Timewarp in the late 00s and early 2010s. These days he's focusing more on original productions, and now he returns to the Greek label with his debut full-length. Contemporary funk is his stock-in-trade, sometimes - as on 'Jack The Ripper' - veering towards the funk-breaks/funk-hop side of the street, other times leaning more towards "new old" homage vibes, but never shy of dropping in a familiar vocal sample here and there, or injecting a hint of disco, Afro or even house flava. Standouts for this reviewer include the Zapp/Cameo-esque 'Fatty Bump' and the jaunty, jazzy 'Gimme Some Faith'.

Timewarp Inc - "Jum Jazi" (Digital Alkemist feat BNC remix) - (4:48) 85 BPM
Review: Fill yer boots or digital DJ stockings this christmas with some fine dub tunes and versions of undeniable funk from the Timewarp catalogue. Taking in a host of remixes, instrumentals and edits; highlights include the freewheeling cool jazz of Freethinker Funk Essence's "Spring Air", the dance-heavy wares of Djtzinas & The Redgreen Wood Soundsystem remix to "Yuil Disco Breaks" and Funky Destination's sweet, dreamy and percussive "Roots People". Deeper house inspired dub tracks come from Shantisan in "Que Nego E Esse (Timewarp Inc dub remix) with fine originals from AUditors DOmination's "Dreaming Of Zion" and Groove Monkz's digi-ska track "Promised Land". The place to be.

Royal Gruv Sound - "One To One Party" (feat Black Kush) - (3:07) 104 BPM
Valique - "Long Journey" (Quincy Jointz remix) - (5:15) 56 BPM
Review: Greece's Quincy Jointz selects the sixth volume of his concept Lime Sorbet compilation. Lime Sorbet was always the compilation series for open minded music fans and so is also volume six. From sunshine vibes, funky grooves and breakbeat through to house or downbeat. Once again Quincy selects a special mixture of unreleased music by well-known and upcoming artists. Block rockin' beats courtesy of Valique with "Long Journey" (Quincy Jointz remix) will sort you for deep funk, cheeky crooner Louie Austen is back since the electroclash days with the sleazy soul of of "Make You Move" (Quincy Jointz remix) and Stuttgart's Tobe Tronic serves up the deep, breaks driven nu-disco of "Night Drums".

Review: There's no need for a funky bailout for Greece's Timewarp label as they have more than enough in reserve. So much so in fact, that they have rustled up another 31(!) fresh cuts for this, their latest compilation. Highlights include Niles Philip's quirky stop-start nu-funker "What'Cha Doin", the Euro/reggaeton hybrid weirdness of the Congo Sanchez remix of "Choices In Life" by AfroQBen and the bonkers electro-pop skank of "Blast" by good old Quincy Jointz (as remixed by Kowalski).

Review: Unhappy with the amount of re-edits and mash-ups in the nu-disco scene, Timewarp are doing something about it! That 'something' is the Lemon Sorbet series of mixes curated by the one and only Quincy Jointz. Featuring some of the finest original compositions, many until now unreleased, from leading nu funk artists. Highlights of volume 5 include the retro new jack urban beats of Jointz own Flashbaxx remix, Ashley Slater (Freak Power)'s low-slung and slinky Al Green cover "Stay Together" and the cool, slap-bass heavy, Latino disco jam "New York To Brasil" by DJ Colour C2. Review: It seems that Timewarp's rare funk compilations are like buses: you wait ages then three arrive at once. Well, not quite - the second instalment in this series arrived two years ago, precisely half the time between that and the first one. So by our calculations the next one should arrive in a year's time. That gives us just enough time to fully absorb all 31 bangers featured here, including the backbeat swagger of "Ghetto Drunk", the shimmering '70s glamour of "Soul Sugar" and the lush, luxury disco of Timewarp's own remix of "Afrofunk".

Funky Rotator (Mister T remix) - (4:45) 115 BPM Hot
Review: Bootleg mash-up specialist turned funk breaks heavyweight Zamali returns with "The Rebirth", an expansive EP packed with well-crafted, floor-friendly goodies. "Funky Rotator" sets the tone, offering just the right balance between spiralling Hammond funk, shuffling drum breaks and melodic sweetness. Punchier dancefloor fare can be found in the shape of "Far Far West" and Time To Sleep", while "Loose Control" [sic] and "Is It Worth It" drop the tempo, expertly adding a welter of soul and funk instruments for added pleasure. The EP also includes a number of tasty remixes, with the sweaty funk beats, spiralling trumpets and low slung bass of Mister T's "Funk Rotator" rework standing out.

Review: Tru Funk unleash yet another spotless funk collection on Tasty Beats Vol 1. Boasting premium party nuggets from some of their most distinctive contributors, it's a non-stop session of genre-fusion and raw funk. Highlights include Funk Efemdzemov's cheeky Rick James and Bootsy Collins references on "1,2,3, Yeah You Got It", Phunk Sinatra's ode to the one and only James Brown and Zamali's insanely obese, horn-heavy workout "Pervitine Groove". Full flavoured goodness throughout, this lives up to its tasty title.

Wood N Soo - "Petty Larceny" - (4:15) Hot
Zamali - "Fast Move" (feat Mr Critical) - (4:39) 139 BPM
Review: Brazilian soundboys Butter Music have a motto: 'keep it greasy'. In the days of over-polished pristine production where everything comes with a high-end sheen, it's a refreshing approach. It works, too: All Good Funk Alliance's "Turn The Sound" is a jittering, sleazy P-funk bass romp while Zamali's "Fast Move" is all '70s moody funk with big trumpets and even bigger beats. Wood N Soo's "Petty Larceny" is the slickest of the set, nodding subtly at the trembling synth sound Get Physical established itself with 10 years ago while retaining heaps of funk in the groove.

Highlights abound but be sure to digest the slap-bass fusion of Funkanomic's Marvin Gaye homage "One More Headache", Morlack's '80s synth smelting of Zhane's "Groove Thang" and Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman" and Roy Hoy / Unknown DJ's mindblowing cauldron of Fatboy Slim, James Brown and Public Enemy on "Xpress Your Big Stuff". Review: He's back! Yep, the Belgian master of soul nouveau follows up last year's mini-album, At The Speed Of Light, with another, Soulshine, again on Greek disco imprint Timewarp. Once again we have a sizzling selection of authentic-sounding retro funk grooves that could easily be lifted from an obscure 70s blaxploitation movie. Highlights include the, analogue 70s porno-style soundtrack-isms of "Unite", the strangely baggy sounding "Brassin" and the very literal "Slap It Hard", which does indeed featured a very sternly slapped snare!

Review: Canadian producer, Afternoons In Stereo, has been on hiatus since 2011, but it hasn't stopped his name appearing on a host of remixes of other acts ever since. Now the Athens-based Timewarp label has decided to collect the best of all these appearances in a one-stop-shop release. There are 11 top-notch tracks here. Some choice picks include the loungey bass grooves of "Growth Strategies", the reggae funk of "Jamaican", the retro ghetto stomp of "Step On", the almost electro-Bhangra of "Rose Of Ispahan" and the authentic disco workout "Funky Dog". A perfect stopgap release whilst we wait for this prolific producers new studio album, due 2013.

BadboE - "Couci Nari" - (4:22) 89 BPM
Basement Freaks - "City Jam" - (3:06) 106 BPM
Review: German funk baron Quincy gives us another fine slice of Lime Sorbet radio show with this 15 strong collection of nu funk gems. The faces are there - Basement Freaks with the butt-shaking cut n' paste party joint "City Jam" and Ursula with a retro-gaze car-chase "Tension" - but there's also refreshing presence of fringe nu funk players like Michael Devillis with the horn-hooting "Craziest Things" and Peurto Rican selector Stereo77 with his dusty, low swung bass wig out "Algeria". It's the work of a true selector, and the continuous mix simply proves Quincy can use the turntables as well as he can curate.

From bongo boogie-woogie ("Elpuma" - Afternoons In Stereo) and jazz-flavoured sunshine house (Trotter - "At The Pool") to low-swung sleazy breakbeat funk (Timewarp Inc - "Start With An A") and woozy Latin wig-outs (Auditors Domination - "Rempeto") this hefty party compendium more than makes up for the wait.

In a bid to raise funds for the Love Music, Hate Racism charity, it gathers together tracks from both heavy hitters (Badboe, Fort Knox Five, Zamali etc) and lesser-known talents on one action-packed compilation. If this kind of party-rocking fun is your thing, it should be an essential purchase, not least because it includes some fine material. Check in particular Super Combo Funk's trad funk/P-funk fusion "I Don't Need No Dope", PulpFusion's fuzzy "Rockin Kids" and the wobble-step influenced "Boob Job" from Bristolian Ewan Hoozami, who happens to be the son of former England rugby player Alistair Hignell.
