Review: Mike Dehnert and his Fachwerk and MD2 labels have been at the forefront of 90s-inspired techno for the past few years - but will his consistently high strike rate translate to a long player? Thankfully, Dehnert sticks to what he knows best, resisting the ill-advised urge to position himself as a versatile all-rounder. Apart from the brief, abstract "Intro", the dreamy ambience of "Kontextfrei" and the hissing static noise of "Outro", the album centres on the dancefloor, but manages to avoid repetition. And while the dubby bass, scuffled beats and clanging percussion of "Infix" is indicative of the Berlin producer's abeyance to the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction axis, Framework widens his scope; "Beatmatching" is an uplifting vocal-sample heavy groove and this new-found playfulness is also audible on the rave riff sampling "Teilfolge" and the purring bassline and synth melodies of "Quattro". Dehnert may be operating in a new format, but Framework proves that when it comes to techno functionalism, he is peerless.

Review: Delsin's house imprint reaches number four with Dusseldorf's Andy Vaz at the helm for "Don't Lose Your Mind", complete with vocal contributions from Niko Marks. The Soul vocal mix does exactly what it says on the tin, with a track that sounds like it came straight out of a 30 year old time capsule, with a deep bassline and smoky saxophone solo, whilst the House dub mix adds glittering keys to the mix and holds back on the vocal but loses none of the charm.

Review: At a time when classic-sounding techno is at a premium, Boris Bunnik aka Conforce is one of its main proponents, right? Wrong. It would be too easy and simplistic to dismiss the Dutch producer as merely revisiting the sounds that were current during the mid-90s, and Escapism, like his other releases for Clone, Rush Hour and Delsin, does much to dispel any pre-conceived notions about him. One of the common themes and sources of inspiration on the album is Bunnik's love of swirling, ambient textures. Spacey melodies unfold all the way through "Aquinas Control" as a dubby, rippling bass takes hold, while on the title track, glassy percussion and shuffling 808s provide the electro backing to Bunnik's atmospheric chords. There are times too when it sounds like Conforce has completely immersed himself in electronic music's reflective, esoteric side and the evoactive, shimmering synths of "Timelapse" could have been part of a long lost sci-fi soundtrack. On other occasions, Escapism sounds earthy, grainy and twitchy, especially on the detuned textures of "Diversion" or "Revolt DX", which sees Bunnik drop a gained, jarring rhythm track. However, the real highlights occur when Bunnik occupies a place where all of these sounds meet, like the ghostly pads and forceful bass of "Elude" or the hushed tones and uplifting synths of "Ominous". It's also where you'll find this year's most eloquent articulation of techno escapism.

Review: Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann has a formidable reputation as a remixer, but this writer feared that he had bitten off more than he could chew with his latest project. After all, he was tasked with reworking one of the standout cuts from this year's best techno album, and these doubts only intensified when the original with its menacing bass swagger, layered, reverberating noises and chilling vocal were replayed on this remix package. Thankfully, Dettmann has risen to the occasion; "Definition 1" doesn't stray too far from the original, with a swinging bass and a focus on Middle eastern horn riffs prevailing. It's on "Definition 2" that he really deserves kudos: upping the tempo and combining layered, Basic Channel dub chords with the plaintive vocal, it's a near perfect mix of techno and electronic torch song soul.

Review: Much like their geographical near neighbours Rush Hour, Clone and Creme, the point where we run out of superlatives to adorn the releases from Delsin Records is most definitely on the horizon. The label seems to retain an uncanny knack for covering each release in excellence, regardless of whether the artist responsible is well known or hitherto unheralded. Their latest definitely falls under the latter, with Hazylujah coming correct on Too Many Ghosts, a debut four track EP that reveals the fledgling Italian producer to already possess an enviable mastery of murked out, smudgy techno. The title track is an undeniable highlight, shifting into focus through the mists of grey noise and dragging your senses through the deepest recesses of detuned analogue textures and hollowed out rhythms across eight haunting minutes that sound like Actress doing dub techno. The three other tracks are just as idiosyncratically good and this is yet another Delsin release that deserves your full attention.

Review: Having firmly found his groove with UK labels such as 2nd Drop and Fourth Wave, Gerry Read's latest EP sees that further notch in his ascendancy as he gets snapped up by Dutch institution Delsin to kick off their new house-orientated series. Stylistically, the four tracks on this new EP continue the mission statement Read has already laid out; there's a claustrophobic quality to lead track "Yeh Come Dance", that finds a cacophony of wooden percussion and angular vocal loops sweating all over each other while the hi-hats leer on drunkenly. As something of a contrast, the beat in "Crawlspace" is decidedly straight by these standards, letting the sequencing of the drum machine call more of the shots before too much wayward sample placing can send the rhythm askew. It doesn't take much to see the jazzy quality in Read's music, but "Bozza" perhaps marks the first instance where this quality has been capitalised on and fully realised. In that sense it marks something of a progression for the young beatsmith, as the complex arrangement of brushed drums, piano and other sonic debris aim for a place other than that usual seedy corner of the dancefloor. "Crooked" rounds off the EP with by distilling all these feelings into one track of strung out strangeness, where the groove is borrowed from garage and then robbed of its innocence, with an underlying bed of mean-spirited audio fragments. As with all the GR output it's evocative stuff, and reminds you that this EP marks not just consistency but also progress for the plucky producer.

Review: Delsin's second release in its fledgling house-tinged series is a killer, with veteran producer Steve Pickton aka Soul 223 at the helm. Almost Like It Used To Be follows the well received debut 12" from wonderkid Gerry Read, and once Delsin turn to a UK producer, although this time they plump for experience over youth: Pickton began producing in the early 90s, and is best known for his ambient/IDM techno work under the Stasis moniker. He has released records with the likes of Mo Wax and Soul Jazz, as well as three albums for Peacefrog, namely Inspiration (1995), Fromtheoldtothenew (1996) and 2003?s Past Movements, and his vast experience is all too obvious on this EP, which has echoes of the crackly, jazz-influenced output of Kenny Dixon Jnr, with the hazy, lolloping beat of "Arties Mood" and uber-deep "Heartstrings" standing out in particular. Well worth checking.

Review: After a prolific 2020 with releases on Bad Manners and a collaboration with Rodhad on his WSNWG label, Vril returns to Delsin. The Dutch imprint was one of the first outlets to release his material, so his return is timely. The title track is a brooding, atmospheric piece with celestial synths and low-tempo bass pulses at its heart. Delsin has tapped some respected names to remix the track; Voiski sticks to the original track's tempo, with a mid-tempo rhythm underpinning the emotive, textured sounds. Meanwhile, Vril teams up with Bad Manners boss Marcel Dettmann to drop slinky break beats and euphoric synths on their version of "Seele", while the His Master's Voice remix is the most intense version, led by a booming bass and pounding broken beats.

Review: Hot on the heels of the magnificent 2020 Florence retrospective on Delsin, Stefan Robbers drops some brand new material for the label. Drawing on the deep Detroit techno sound that inspired him throughout his storied career, the veteran producer stamps his own signature style on these tracks. There's the spiky rhythm and offbeat drums of "Sonomatic"; while on "Sunset Route", the breezy synth melodies that have become Robbers' stock in trade are abundant. "Magic Potion" represents the clubbier side to Robbers' work, with a pulsating groove and clicking percussion underpinning niggling acid lines, but it's only a temporary divergence and "Voices From The Moon" is another atmospheric, off-centre affair.

Review: Delsin's delivery of the Upekah EP from Son.Sine is contender for rerelease of the year, ending for many DJs the long and hopeless search for the EP's stand out track of the same name. You can't blame those lost trying to find the title as it was originally released by New Zealand label Nurture as their fifth record (of eight) in 2000. This said, nothing should be taken away from the mellow chords, oceanic soundscapes and slower beats of the EP's other tracks "Karuna" and "Mudita". A truly seminal release that's been given second life by the marvellous Delsin.

Lonely (Crunchy Club mix) - (6:04) 120 BPM Hot
Review: Amsterdam-based Italian producer Spaventi Dazzuro delivers a killer release for Aroy Dee's label. Lonely is not the place to look if you're in search of the new and unexplored, but it does see its author deliver two great hardware jams. "Lonely (Jerkoff Mix)" features the kind of raw, rugged drums Dee's mini-empire appears to hold an exclusive on; coupled with spacey synths and a grimy 303, it makes for a familiar but nonetheless intoxicating combination. Meanwhile, "Lonely (Crunchy Club Mix)" is a more jacking affair. This time, the drums are louder in the mix, but the way that the synth keys float over them makes it hard not to be seduced by Spaventi's unashamedly old school approach.

Review: Having started out as a remix-orientated project, the Tuff City Kids pairing of Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer are increasingly being regarded as producers of original club ready material. Since debuting in high profile fashion with a EP for Ostgut sub-label Unterton last year, the hirsute pairing have grace both Live At Robert Johnson and Sven Vath's Cocoon with original material. A debut on Delsin's house focused series seems right in line with the Tuff City Kids trajectory and their talents for hard-edged yet melodic house productions are on full display with the Roby Tease EP. Lead track "HFS" sets the tone perfectly with blissful textural touches that feel like a Lauer trademark lent a sense of subtle brutishness by the rise and tide of the rhythmic elements, while "Wendy (Girlfriend 43 Piano Mix)" is a contrast of 90s piano house and more steely contemporary techno. Janson and Lauer's production versatility is further demonstrated with final cut "Reeze" that operates at a slower tempo that showcases the well-defined drums and snares, ramshackle percussive flourishes and juddery bass.

Review: For anyone who thinks that Dutch label Delsin has seen better days, there's this release. Recalling the label's most introspective techno soul - Dimension 5 and Future Beat Alliance - as well as the cavernous, hollowed-out house of Newworldaquarium, Passions for the most part eschews the dance floor. The title track is characterised by waves of trancey synths and plink-plonk beats, while the author goes deeper still on "Reminiscence" and "Nocturnal Passions 1'" both of which unfold with the melnacholic techno ambience that recalls Aril Brikha's landmark Deeparture In Time album. Like the best of Delsin's catalogue, this is timeless deep techno for the head and soul.

Review: Dutch label Delsin's 100th release celebrations continue, albeit in a typically understated fashion, on this fifth instalment. BNJMN's beautiful but brief opener "Dive" sets the scene for the release as does the dreamy but serene "Radio's Mutterings" by Herva. While the pace picks up on Delta Funktionen's "Petrol", a fusion of robust broken beats and dreamy chords, the overall tone here is mellow and melodic. This is audible on Bleak's "Keep Me Close", where dubbed out drums and a trancey bass prevail, and on the standout track from John Beltran. The US producer may be known primarily for his home-listening sounds, but on "Return to Nightfall" he copper-fastens his dreamy, melodic textures to a pulsing, hypnotic groove.

Review: Born in Hannover and formerly a hip-hop producer, the mysterious Vril first surfaced in 2010 with an EP of boomed-out dub techno that inaugurated Giegling's now defunct Staub series label and tickled the fancy of Herr Dettmann who licensed "V3? for an appearance on his 2011 Conducted mix for Music Man. Last year's Flux EP for Semantica meant Vril was one of the few artists integral to Giegling that has appeared on a label outside of the Weimar-based operation, and the producer's dalliances further afield will continue with the Vortekz EP for Delsin. The three-track EP arrives hot on the heels of Delsin's 100th release celebrations and sees the label start 2014 with a bang. Amusingly, Delsin have revealed that Vril's material caused some of the expensive mastering equipment at that "well known mastering company in Germany" to crash during the mastering sessions - the first such instance in over 20 years of business.

Review: Sawlin, Convextion and Ross 154 feature on Delsin's centenary series as it belatedly reaches its mid point! Despite sounding like a camera model, the 100DSR/VAR series has thus far done a fine job of representing everything the Amsterdam-based Delsin has achieved musically in its 17 years of output to date. This third 100DSR sees Vault Series regular Sawlin debut proper on Delsin having featured on last year's Inertia series for sub label Ann Aimee, whilst there's also a wonderfully insouciant production from Texan producer Convextion. It's perhaps most notable however for the inclusion of the excellent "Moon FM Desire" from Ross 154, aka Dutch hero Jochem 'Neworldaquarium' Petri, which has been lifted from the Delsin archives for its first appearance on vinyl.

If you are starting to feel that Bunnik has dealt a deal with the devil that trades sleep for productivity you are not alone - Kinetic Image is his second album this year following the issue of a Versalife longplayer on Clone West Coast and let's not go into all the various EPs and 12"s Bunnik has put one of his various names to this year. Issued by Delsin, Kinetic Image sees Bunnik draw on the experience of his recent non-dancefloor focused output to deliver an album that moves away from regimented 4/4 beats and into slower, more surreptitious tempos. The subaqueous electro vibe we've come to associate with Bunnik still remains and the Dutchman's loyal fans will love this set.

Review: The latest iteration from Boris Bunnik's Conforce project is on Delsin, a label that has hosted much of his previous output. Like other Conforce releases, there is a focus on the deeper side of techno here; the title track sets the tone with a swirling, synth-led piece of ambient mood music, while "Quantum Phaser" is just as evocative - the key difference is that dubbed out drums underpin Bunnik's fathomic dub textures. On "Muon Transverse Momentum" the storied Dutch artist remains focused on the dance floor, with rumbling drums providing the basis for evocative chords. However, the release also contains the more linear "Scorched Earth", which shows that Conforce isn't scared to drop tough, brittle techno.

Review: One of the first labels to release Gunnar Haslam's material back in 2014, Delsin deserves praise for being so quick to tune in to his left of centre talent. This relationship continues now with Cacique De Poyais. The title track is a sparse, tripped out affair that unravels over the course of 13 minutes, its tonal bleeps and sequences twisting and turning in a seductive manner. "Port Sommeil" adopts a similar approach and applies it to the dance floor, with a glitchy, detuned groove underpinning the warbling frequency shifts. Rounding off this idiosyncratic release is "Azote Du Guano", where Haslam ups the pace and puts a focus on chiming bells.

"The Ample Waters" is an upbeat juggernaut powered by melodies and counter melodies that smoulders with UR heritage while "Never Tilt" provides sweet contrast thanks its slow-burning synth-heavy soul. Further on we hit "With Level Hopes", a subversive deep house cut that seeps jazz sentimentalities in such a way it could make Moody Man blush. Finally we're sent to the cosiest of pastures with the beautiful R&B homage "Yet Unfulfilled". Slinky, sleazy and laced with subtle vocoder elements, it's an emotional conclusion to a highly accomplished EP.

Review: As head of Fachwerk along with Roman Lindau and Sascha Rydell, Mike Dehnert has cultivated a weighty brand of techno that still contains a noticeable element of funk. He's also the most prolific of the three, with countless digital albums produced over the years in addition to pair of long players issued on Delsin and Fachwerk and his occasional dalliances with other labels like Echocord and the Clone Basement Series. Outside of Fachwerk, Marsel van der Wielen's Delsin is perhaps the one other label you'd closely associate with Dehnert and it's little surprise to see the Dutch imprint collar him for the 12-track Lichtbedingt. Described by the label as "yet another subtle evolution away from the chord driven, functional sound" Dehnert was initially known for, the album incorporates moments of beatless electronic experimentalism, broken bass, and swinging house, with the results still resolutely Dehnert!

Area Forty One - "Supervoid" - (6:18) 124 BPM
Review: Dutch techno titans Delsin recently celebrated a century of releases with the feverishly good 100DSR compilation. Here they deliver a fourth digital EP of material from the collection, showcasing three of the album's genuine highlights. Redshape's fittingly named "100 (Classic Mix)" is probably the pick. In best Redshape style, it's a near 11-minute journey into jazz-tinged Detroit techno revivalism; classic yet contemporary, driving yet emotionally rich. Area Forty One's "Supervoid" delivers some spookier, deeper techno thrills, while D5's delicious "Stem Cell" - his first new material in some years - bubbles and spits with melodic brilliance. Impressive stuff, all told.

Review: Delsin have chosen a fully established crop of producers for the second 100DSR release, which sees Fachwerk boss Mike Dehnert, alongside Dutch electro revivalist Conforce and '90s British electronica act CiM. Mike Dehnert's return to Delsin comes in the shape of a big room take on his trademark sound with "Passenger", while Delsin regular Conforce delivers "Wave Trace", some dubbier, electro tinged techno similar to his Escapism album. Whereas 100DSR/VAR1 looked to newer names in Gerry Read and Unbroken Dub, Delsin have delved deep into their back catalogue by releasing a new track from Simon Walley's CiM project. It's the first showing of music by CiM since his Noki Bay EP on Ann Aimee released a decade ago, and almost 15 years since he debuted on Delsin with the six-track EP Service Pack.

Review: Delsin's masked crusader returns with his fifth EP on the ever reliable Dutch imprint. The three tracks on offer here showcase Redshape's sure hand with vintage production, with "Future Shock" a veritable analogue stew of swirling computer game bleepy synths and shuffling drum programming. "Kung Fu" sees the producer pay homage to the jacking sounds of Chicago, while the crunchy stomp juxtaposed by intergalactic synths of "Manhattan" pleases our ears immensely. Top release.

Review: Nick Lapien & Robin Koek's Artefakt project returns to Delsin with a largely ambient LP spearheaded by two experimentally driven beat numbers in "Iridescence" and the skizzy, dubbed-out sounds of "Terraforming". A continual force in exploring various strains of techno and electronica, Days Bygone presents Artefakt with a third studio album cushioned with drone, textural ambience and classical refrains of pianos and ethereal strings. There's percussive and synthwise elements to explore in "Cambium" and "Orinoco Basin" too with tracks like "Half Speed Tape" and "Wolf Number" venturing deep into the watercolours of landscape music.

Review: Despite being released a quarter of a century ago, Steve Rachmad's Asphyx release has not grown old. Rachmad was one of the first European producers to make the Detroit template of soulful melodies and dynamic rhythms his own. "Pacifica" and the title track see Rachmad tweak that blueprint to add bubbling, tranced out textures, while on "Darkness In My Life", he articulates a near-perfect fusion of dreamy introspection and rolling drums. But Rachmad reaches nirvana on "X-Tracks" (which for years was mis-titled "Asphyx"), where those unmistakable, swirling melodies will melt even the coldest heart. If you don't already own Asphyx, now is the time to make that change that.

Review: Through aliases like Mohalo and Multicast Dynamics circulating the realms of dub techno and ambient, Samuel van Dijk's VC-118a alias has always been the producer's safe harbour for electro. Keeping his beats dubby and atmospheres deep in Spiritual Machines, VC-118a's fourth album for Delsin (and first following Inside from 2019), presents a distinct connection with glitch, crackle and pop, with transmogrified vocals peppered throughout the LP. By creating his own complement of sample banks, software racks and devices in making the LP, van Dijk was able to work with a hybridised analogue-digital system purely of his own making and the results are abstract, downtempo and hugely atmospheric. Dubbed-out ambient electro with a newfound glitch. Quality.

Review: Mantis 06 is an inspired meeting of minds, as Dino Sabatini teams up with Delsin. Sabatini was one of the architects of hypnotic Italian techno during the early 00s, and this release shows that he has lost none of the flair that characterised his earlier work for Prologue. "Dakarai" revolves around a gentle, organic groove, while on "Afra", he embarks on a darker approach: tribal drums guide the arrangement, which is punctuated by dark textures. "Lewa" follows in a similar vein, as eerie hooks are realised over a hypnotic drum patterns. Meanwhile, "Akanke" is on a totally different tip, with Sabatini dropping hyper active break beats.

Review: 9719 is the work of an inspired hook-up: at one end of the world there's Wata Igarashi, who has released on Bunker NY and Time 2 Express, while at the opposite end, there's Voiski with a catalogue that includes work for L.I.E.S. and Dolly. The fruits of their collaboration is just as far-flung; it moves from the dreamy, bubbling groove of "Pronom" into "Pomme", a pulsating slice of peak-time hypno-techno track that would not sound out of place on a Mike Parker EP. " Regex" is also an uptempo affair, but here they use tranced out synth riffs to accompany the pacy rhythm. "Riff" is another irresistible piece, bolstered by a throbbing acidic groove.

Review: Artefakt launched their own label, De Stijl, last year, but they now return to their spiritual home, Delsin, for this widescreen EP. "Ganzfeld Effect" is among their most expansive compositions to date, with dreamy synths and droning textures unravelling over subsonic bleeps. On "Vapour", they use rickety, staccato drums as a basis for their ghostly synths, while "Delphic" sees them travel down a broken techno route, accompanied by atmospheric textures. The title track is the most dance floor-friendly affair but even here, Artefakt don't break a sweat, instead focusing on dubbed out drums and a shuffling rhythm as a basis for the track's dreamy melodies.

Fragile - (6:22) 138 BPM
Review: Alongside his own Transcendent imprint, Delsin is the other label that Boris Bunnik releases most of his Conforce material on. However, while he returns to the Dutch imprint once again, the approach he deploys on Sins Of Synthesis is different. The esoteric ambient textures that typify Conforce releases are still there but they are articulated within a darker framework. That sound finds its form on the angular, steely rhythms of "Paralaxx". He goes down a darker route for "Sector", where waves of growling bass are fused with rolling drums. "Fragile" is also more stripped back and menacing than typical Conforce material, as melancholic synth stabs are fused with a splurging low end.
