Review: Denver-based Funk Hunk has never been the most prolific of re-editors, though his sporadic releases tend to be decent. There's plenty to set the pulse racing on "Hunk's Got The Answer", his first outing for Danny Worrall's Masterworks Music label. Check first the gnarled disco-rock camp of "Get Up", before admiring the elastic slap-bass motifs at the heart of loopy disco-house workout "Gotcha". "Hunk's Got The Answer" is a languid, tastefully tweaked rearrangement of an obscure, jazz guitar-laden deep disco treat, while "Take A Little More" is a cut-up, house style edit of a bona fide disco anthem. As if that lot wasn't enough to get your pulse racing, "Wot" sees our hunky hero successfully rework a Tom Tom Club style slice of low-slung NYC headiness.

Review: If you're looking for some good old-fashioned soulful house vibes, then stop right here, as Francis Overcast makes his debut on Warrington's Masterworks Music. 'Tired' sports a (sadly uncredited) sultry, jazzy female vocal that's straight outta the very top drawer, and that has enough singalong appeal to ensure anthem status in the relevant spots is almost guaranteed. Glitterbox stalwart Dr Packer supplies vocal and dub remixes that, unsurprisingly, give the original a little extra disco polish, while for the real soul purists, Ruff Diamond's remix is the one to head for. Coming from a relative newbie like Overcast, this is classy stuff!

Review: Two years have passed since the last Masterworks Music label compilation, so this fourth volume is long overdue. It's another expansive affair, with boss man Danny "80s Child" Worrall offering up no less than 20 exclusives from a mixture of label regulars and new recruits. As you'd expect, there's much to enjoy, with highlights including the rubbery and celebratory disco goodness of Surgery Edits' 'Get Up and Boogie', the hazy house pleasure of Dirtytwo's 'Desire', the string-laden peak-time rush of Chris Grubinza's 'Feel The Rush', the revivalist 80s boogie brilliance of Slync and Evie Adams' 'Fantasy', and the wonderfully loved-up 80s soul-meets-nu-disco warmth of Paper Street Soul's 'Fwok!'.

We Gonna Shake It - (5:58) 112 BPM
Review: 15 months after he made his Masterworks Music debut, Chris Grubizna returns with a selection of "Rare Edits". We assume this means that the tracks he's edited are rare and obscure rather than the edits themselves, but either way there's much to enjoy across the four tracks. First up is the bass guitar-driven disco-funk bounce of, "Dance With U", where filtered snippets of his source material come underpinned by metronomic house drums, before Grubinza applies the same tooling-up techniques to the disco shuffle of "Say What". Even better is the deep, soulful house smoothness of "Talkin About", which bobs along at a beatdown-friendly 106 BPM, while closing cut "Gonna Shake It" sees our hero get busy with a slab of disco-funk rich in rubbery bass and flash-fried guitar licks.

Review: Hot on the heels of a fine debut on Midnight Riot, mystery artist More Lotion serves up a second selection of floor-friendly re-edits, this time for Donny Worrall's Masterwork Music imprint. There's naturally much to admire throughout, from the driving, off-kilter P-funk/nu-disco fusion of throbbing opener "Haven't Been Funked Enough", to the slick '80s electrofunk wiggle of "Touche" (a fine revision of a familiar, synth-heavy staple of many boogie sets). In between you'll find the spiraling synths, flash-fried grooves and razor-sharp funk guitars of "P.M Affair" and the soaring, string-laden disco pump of "Them Changes".

Review: Since they last featured on Masterworks Music, Mexico City's Sould Out crew has delivered rather good releases on Furious Mandrill, Kultus Musiek, Alpaca Edits and Hotbox Music. There's plenty to admire on their return to Danny Worrall's prolific imprint, not least killer opener "Across The Sky", a prize chunk of reworked P-funk/disco-funk fusion that boasts some seriously good slap bass. Slow-motion, filter-heavy boogie-house goodness is provided via the hot-stepping "I Got You Baby", while "Bittersweet Memories" is a gently dubbed-out chunk of 80s soul bounciness. Elsewhere, "Look Out" sees Sould Out up the tempo on a South American disco-boogie workout, while "Then She Was Gone" wraps Balearic jazz guitar solos around a chugging, head-in-the-clouds groove.

Review: Dirtyelements and Drunkdrivers first joined forces in the studio last year, with the quietly impressive results featuring on Pusic Records' tenth release. Here they get a chance to showcase their brand of warm and groovy, sample-heavy disco revivalism via a debut EP for Masterworks Music. Check first opener "You Must Try", a loose and groovy chunk of loved-up disco-house rich in snaking saxophone riffs, glassy-eyed female vocal samples and swirling chords, before turning your attention to the thickset, filter-heavy loop disco of "Equinoxious". Arguably best of all, though, is closing cut "One Night", a humid and chunky revision of a Rhodes-driven, jazz-funk-era boogie gem.

Review: Following appearances on Midnight Riot and Masterworks Music compilations, fast-rising electrofunk cut-up maestro Coutel is given an EP of his own on which to showcase his wares. His style - filter-heavy, loopy, smooth and sumptuous - is largely based around chopped-up rearrangements of largely forgotten '80s soul gems, with ultra-slick vocals riding bumpin' grooves, twinkling synthesizer melodies and shimmering chords. It's hugely appealing, and results in some suitably entertaining fare. Highlights include the soulful boogie-house shuffle of "Gotta Have You", the Jam & Lewis style beatbox pop of "See The Light", and "Stop That", a killer loop jam blessed with delicious guitars, simmering strings and addictive vocals.

Review: Having already carved a decent name for himself in the nu-disco universe, 80s Child (aka Danny Worrall), now turns his hand to running labels. Masterworks is his new imprint, and this eponymous compilation is its debut release. It's a total all-you-can-eat buffet of contemporary disco, featuring a whole host of familiar names. There are a whopping 23 tracks on here, some of the best include Tomas Malo's sultry grinder, "After The Rain", Yam Who?'s bouncy sunkissed disco joint "Find Out" and the digi-freestyle breaks of TV's "Love Situation".

Love Somebody - (6:51) 122 BPM
Review: Should you have missed his previous EPs on Better Listen, Kolour and Editorial - amongst others - you may still be blissfully unaware of Chevals, a self-styled "French house producer, disco cutter and horse". Should that be the case, we suggest that you check out this fine four-tracker - his first for Masterworks Music - as soon as possible. It begins with a fantastic slab of gospel-powered disco house (the peak-time stomp of "My Feet Keep Changing") and ends with a throbbing club cut rich in fizzing P-funk synths, bumpin' beats and purple-tinted electronics ("Love Somebody"). In between, you'll find a deliciously jaunty, horn-rich mid-tempo jam ("This Time Is Dedicated To Love") and a hybrid remix/re-edit of a smooth '80s soul cut ("Never Will I Leave You Baby"). Insatiable stuff.

Never Can Say - (6:27) 116 BPM
Review: Some re-editors like to dig deep, others concentrate on reworking much-loved classics, and we're firmly in the latter camp here. 'What About My Love' draws heavily on the 1982 Jonnnie Taylor cut of the same name - better known to most in its 'Lola's Theme' guise - while 'I Know U' revisits Chaka's 'I Know You, I Live You', 'Turn Me On' loops up Robert Palmer's 'I Didn't Mean To Turn You On', and 'Never Can Say' transforms Thelma Houston's mega-hit into a louche, lounge-y groover. The exception to the rule is 'Something More Than Special', a midtempo soulful jam whose inspiration eludes us.

Review: Fresh from offering up a string of fine EPs on Better Listen and Moonrise Hill Material, Saint Paul pitches up on Masterworks Music with a quartet of warm and summery re-edits. First up is the sweet afternoon breeze of "Don't Give Up On Love", a gently tooled-up take on an '80s soul gem rich in twinkling synthesizer melodies and hazy vocal snippets. "Fancy Rhythm" is even more sun-baked in feel, with languid trumpet lines weaving in and out of a smooth jazz-funk/wide-eyed disco groove, while "Relieve Your Mind" sees Saint Paul gently beef up a soulful disco shuffler. To round things off, he serves up the dusty, jazz-fired deep house of "Lundi Sous La Pluie" whose woozy horn samples and twinkling electric piano lines set a suitably blazed mood.

Review: Two months after making his Masterworks Music comeback with an EP of tidy re-edits of rare and obscure jams, Chris Grubizna returns to Danny Worrall's popular label with a similarly minded sequel. There are six tracks to choose from, all of which have been given a slightly more metronomic swing and a bit more bottom-end weight to suit contemporary dancefloors. Highlights include rush-inducing opener "All You Need" (a rubbery revision of Barbara Roy and Ecstasy, Passion & Pain's 1981 gem 'If You Want Me"), the clavinet-heavy disco-funk chug of "Gettin' Down", the low-slung Miami Funk/disco fusion of "Miami Vice", and the jazzy disco sunshine that is closing cut "Summer Joy".

Review: After recent excursions on Funk Fusion and Get Down Edits, Colchester-based rework specialist Shit Hot Soundsystem returns to 80's Child's Masterworks Music. As you might expect, Sexy Dancer largely focuses on heavyweight, seriously compressed cut-ups and re-edits of '80s dancefloor jams. There are a couple of thumping, filter-heavy tweaks of Prince style P-funk jams (see "Aint Nobody" and "Black Coffee"), a dash of slap bass-wielding '80s soul goodness (the excellent "Steady Rocking"), a piano-laden dash of singalong boogie-house ("Charlotte"), and - somewhat bizarrely - a chugging cut-up of Living In A Box's eponymous debut single.

Review: Swiss producer Adam Nova has racked up releases on labels including Glasgow Underground, Mood Funk, Spa In Disco and many more. Now he comes to Masterworks Music, who are based in the glittering disco metropolis of Warrington, with this two-tracker. 'Give It On Up' itself is an authentically late 70s/early 80s-sounding affair, and perfectly serviceable, but it's the more house-ified 'You're Number 1' that's the killer to these ears - with an opening minute that's the closest thing you'll hear to an Ecstasy rush in sonic form, it's a proper sure-fire party-starter and no mistake, guv'nor!

Review: Like so many other re-editors of recent years, Copenhagen-based Ziggy Phunk was given his big break by Yam Who's Midnight Riot imprint. Here, he graduates to fellow Midnight Riot alumnus '80s Child's Masterworks Music label with a five-track burst of '80s soul, boogie and electrofunk reworks. His style is delay-laden and tasteful, as if his aim is to create contemporary dancefloor dubs that pay tribute to the originators of the style. There's plenty of good quality material on show throughout, from the '80s late night radio flex of the guitar-laden, synth-heavy "Fallin For You" and rolling bounce of "The Good Girl" (a rework of a Lilo Thomas charity shop fave), to the rubbery basslines and smooth soul vocals of "In The Name Of Love".

Review: Those who pay close attention to the contemporary edit scene should already be aware of Voodoo Whiskey. The Newcastle-based producer has previously released music on a wide number of labels - Undercover Operations, Editorial and Chopshop included - and here pops up on '80s Child's Masterworks Music. He begins with the bumpin', delay-laden disco-house swing of "Blueberry Muffins", before dipping a toe into the world of filter-heavy disco-funk on the pleasingly sweet and punchy "Get Next To You". Elsewhere, be sure to check out the funked-up disco-house roller "Tutti Frutti" (the main sax riff, in particular, is ace), and closer "Kittiwake Kebab", whose combination of hazy instrumentation and shuffling breakbeats is particularly refreshing.

Review: Despite hailing from modern day Norway, Lux Experience's heart remains firmly in the USA during the heady days of the 1970s. Nothing wrong with that as nothing really tops the thrill of the original disco explosion during that wild decade. Here he unearths four more long gems from that time and retweaks them for contemporary dancefloors. "Street Disco" is and accelerated proto-hiHRG opener, "Your Luv" begins as classic French Touch-style diva loops before expanding into more stripped backed boogie and "Freak Mouse" is a bass driven chant-along. Lastly "Prance With Me" wraps things up with some seriously elastic party vibes.

He's in a disco mood, as per usual, and he's mashing up samples and beats like no tomorrow; we have five juicy pieces of dancefloor gold on here, the more magical moments residing in the funky and riff-driven "Makes You Blind" (Don't Stop edit)", the man's BSP dub of the string-heavy "Burning Up", and his dubbier dub of "Found Love". Review: Danny "80s Child" Worrall's Masterworks Music label seems to specialize in delivering tasty reworks of long forgotten '80s soul, boogie and P-funk gems. This latest EP from Brooklyn-based P-Sol is packed to the rafters with this kind of gear. He does an admirable job balancing the needs of the dancefloor with giving the original material due reverence, as you'd expect from someone of his vast experience. There's some slow, chugging, synth-laden disco sweetness ("Every Night"), a dash of breezy '80s dancefloor soul (the filters and bumpin' beats of "Real Love"), and a lesson in the power of dubbed-out horns and eyes-closed synth solos (the admirable "Do Ya"). In other words, plenty of tried-and-tested material for those who dig synth-heavy disco grooves.

Review: Here we have a juicy debut from re-edit man Mike Woods. Boasting five tracks, we quickly can see that he is all about squeezing the grooves out of classic disco, teasing each samples until it pops. "Hot Your Hot" kicks things off with six-minutes of extended funky riffage that occasionally gives way to some vocal joy. Elsewhere "It Seems To Hang On" is more vocal-orientated with a vintage Curtis Mayfield-style singer lost in painful rapture, "She's A Groovy Freak" is taught boogie fun, "That Dexter Thing" is a hypnotic, low-slung groove loop and "Right In The Socket" is an accelerated keyboard disco jam.

Review: Having previously established his reputation via a string of well received releases on Atop and Hot Digits, Massimo Vanoni has thrown his lot in with '80s Child's Masterworks Music imprint. Midtempo disco-funk throwdown "Wicked Funk" aside, the majority of the EP sees him explore slower territory, joining the dots between head-nodding warm-up fare and more chugging, slow house territory. "Respect" wraps fluttering flute lines around a sinewy, string-drenched disco groove, while "Get Up" is a toe-tapping disco-funk chugger blessed with spacey nu-disco synth flourishes. Best of all, though, is "Keep On", which sounds like a lost LTJ jam. It certainly has the same loose-but-loopy, slowly unfurling feel.

Review: Tomas Malo seems to be something of a rising star on the edits-not-edits scene. Here he brings his Tiger & Woods style cut-up goodness to '80s Child's Masterworks Music imprint. After delivering a deliciously tactile, loved-up interpretation of a wide-eyed '80s soul gem ("After The Rain"), he proceeds to turn Billy Ocean's "Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)" into a hypnotic, filter-heavy chugger, and turns a synth boogie jam into a head-nodding house treat ("We All Love A Fair"). "Pay Cut" does the same with a low-slung disco-funk smasher, while the filtered breakdowns and massive drops on "Reachin' Out" should cause a commotion on the dancefloor.

Review: Having been a DJ since the 1980s - first in his native Argentina, and now in London - Fabiolous Barker knows how to work a dancefloor. That knowledge came to the fore on his debut release for Funkfusion last year. Here, he transfers to '80s Child's Masterworks Music imprint and delivers a sextet of impressive re-edits. He kicks things off with the boogie-era disco bounce of "Back On Love", before slowing things down with the shuffling, P-funk style chug of "Sticky Party". There's a dash of piano-laden disco funk ("Funktime"), a tasty Whodini rework (the electro synths and rubbery bass of "Houdini"), and a tasteful Taana Gardner rework ("Heartbeat"). Oh, and a slice of harmonica-laden rare groove soulfulness ("Manhattan").

Review: Evil Smarty has spent much of his successful re-edit career collaborating with the equally cheekily named Bad Barbie. Here, he goes solo, delivering a four-track missive of reworks for '80s Child's Masterworks Music label. He gets things going with the throbbing, electro-disco stomp of "Disco Glory", before dipping the tempo for a dreamy rearrangement of Surface's loved-up synth-boogie classic "Falling In Love" (here simply titled "Falling", and arguably one of the most re-edited tunes of all time). "Go Gain" is a brilliant chunk of rock-tinged power-boogie (think bold synth bass, swooping sound effects, razor-sharp guitars and poodle perms), while "Eye 2 Eye" is a tooled-up, house-friendly sprint through purple funk pastures.

Review: By the power of Greyskool, scalpel fiends Dave Gerrard and Rob Bairstow pop up on Masterworks Music with the follow-up to their 2015 debut, Inside The Box. They begin with a cheeky curveball: a punchy and floor-friendly re-imagining of Gino Latino's 1988 Euro-house hit "Welcome". "Room Full of Strangers" is a fine scalpel work of Candi Staton's superb, mid-tempo disco anthem "Nights On Broadway" - this time with a little extra low-end chug - while "Something Shady" is a fine rework of Labi Siffre's "I Got The..." that subtly gives it a little more dancefloor oomph. Finally, they make a play for "end of night edit of the year" with a tastily looped-up rearrangement of Stephanie Mills' super-sweet "Wha'cha Gonna Do With My Lovin".

Review: David Platzdasch has enjoyed a productive 2016, releasing a string of quietly impressive singles on Manuscript and Gents & Dandys. Here he rounds off the year via an appearance on '80s Child's Masterworks Music. First, he heads into loose, loopy, peak-time disco-house territory with "First Step", before diving into deeper, warmer and groovier territory via the mid-tempo deep house shuffler, "Gleichtsicht". The German aims deeper still on "Free At Last", where swirling strings, dreamy chords and a dense analogue bassline smother a bongo-rich disco drum track. Finally, he wraps up proceedings with "Strimpulse", a spacey deep house number blessed with twinkling electric pianos and warm, sun-kissed chord progressions.

Review: Danny '80s Child' Worrall's nu-disco Masterworks Music imprint regularly drops quality re-edits that are crafted for maximum dancefloor destruction. Here we have some 80s jams reworked for the pleasure of our dancing feet. First up a very famous South London boogie trio have one of their biggest hits tweaked by Mike Woods into "Muzik" featuring that signature twangy electronic bass line coupled with tougher drums. Elsewhere we get filtered, glittery synth soul courtesy of the Shit Hot Soundsystem's "Spinnin", "Stay With Me" adds some killer freestyle drums patterns and "Let You Go" by Ruben & Ra is pure, nasty electro-funk at its finest.

Review: Ronnie Turner cut his teeth in the early '80s, playing alongside UK funk and soul stars of the time at his own promotions. He went on to become a regular DJ at the original house nights at the Slough Centre in 1989, alongside London house pioneers Carl Cox, Trevor Fung, Danny Rampling, Brandon Block and Rocky & Diesel. His production has earned him most plaudits over the last two decades. Signed to Brighton's Loaded Records in the mid '90s, he enjoyed a UK national Top 50 release with "Gimme Your Love" as Home Alone, before setting up his own label Bulletproofsonics with co-writer Andy Childs (ex-Elevator Suite). He's more recently renowned under his Blunted Funk Project and as one half of The Slacksons. He strikes out solo here for "Don't Lose It", a deep, slinky and soulful number with a huge bassline and euphoric string arrangement made for proper dancefloor elation with its strong vocal section. The remixes here are good too: our pick is Tom Fin's brooding and dramatic rework.

Here he appears on Masterworks with new four track EP, Lovers Call. The title track kicks things off with a straight up four-four beat that gently swells into a string laden disco epic, next, "Move On Up" toughens up a slow 70s soul/funk yearner and "You're the One" is built around warm and tender disco house loops. Lastly "Over You" wraps things up nicely with a slick slice of euphoric French Touch-style filtered disco house. Party central.

Review: If you were looking to nominate a producer for the (entirely imaginary) "nu-disco don of 2019" award, Andy Buchan would be a strong contender. Here he rounds off a hugely successful year via a four-track missive on Masterworks Music. He begins with a driving slab of tooled-up funk fuzziness (the straightened-out righteousness of "Brand New Girl (Billy Garner Edit)", before flexing his disco muscles on the string-laden, percussion-heavy mid-tempo sweetness of "Bless My Soul (Bettye Swan Edit)". 'Disco Overtime (G'Night Edit)" is a filter-sporting take on a mid-80s dancefloor gem rich in soulful vocals, glistening guitars and colourful synths, while "Let's Dance (JB's Bo Horne Edit)" re-imagines a sing-along 1980s classic as a bump-along exercise in filter disco.

Review: The idea behind Masterworks Music's new "Remix Series" is simple: get two different artists to remix each other's work. This time round the artists in question are Mannix and Patzdasch & Dix. The latter deliver two versions of the former's cheerful and groovy disco-funk-goes-house number "All Because Of You": a "High Remix" that boasts some taught Clavinet riffs, bongos aplenty and woozy new synthesizer solos, and the ultra-deep jazz-funk/downtempo breaks fusion of the "Calm Down Mix". Mannix repays the compliment by re-wiring Patzdusch & Dix's drowsy deep house shuffler "Statement" as a stomping slab of rubbery house smothered in tasty disco-funk instrumentation.

Check, for example, the punchy Tijuana brass, lolloping beats and undulating disco bass of opener "Funjazoul", or the tasty edit action of "Hundred of Times", where a hustling disco-funk number, complete with rich electric piano chords, slick guitar riffs and rubbery bass, is expertly looped up and rearranged. They finish with a flourish, too, upping the ante on the bouncy, peak-time disco-funk pump of "Let Me Hear You Say Yeah", which sounds like a tried and tested party-starter.

Review: Spanish nu-disco don James Rodriguez is in fine form on their first appearance for 80's Child's Masterworks Music stable. There's something particularly alluring about opener "Stay Mine", a sumptuous fusion of head-nodding disco and tactile boogie full of sweeping strings, sensual female vocal hooks and a killer groove. He doffs a cap towards boogie-inspired loop-house maestros Tiger & Woods on the superb "Tone of Love" and "Unlimited". The Madrid-based producer arguably saves the best till last with "Win You Back", a nine-minute boogie epic that sits somewhere between the languid shuffle of the EP's opening track and the loop jams showcased elsewhere.

Review: 'Destiny' reminds us of early Prince, just so sassy and sure of itself, with strings, synths and vocal amongst a ton of other layers there's a lot going on in this track but it's all so expertly balanced. 'So Smooth' is one hundred percent our favourite track of the EP, so smooth by name so smooth by nature, with it back bone of power claps, epic 80's synths and unbelievably good vocal. You can almost see at shoulder pad clad lady strutting through the busy streets of New York.

Review: Miami man His Dirty Secrets made his debut in early 2016, serving up a sextet of steamy disco rubs on Midnight Riot. On this follow-up for Masterworks Music he's reined himself in a little, though the four tracks on offer are amongst his strongest reworks to date. There's a breezy dreaminess about the killer combination of undulating boogie gass, jazzy guitar riffs, warm chords and drifting vocal snippets at the heart of deep disco opener "Floatin", while "Fantom (African Woman)" is a lolloping, organ-heavy take on an old Afro-funk gem. Meanwhile, "All The Way" is a string-laden sprint through peak-time disco pastures and "Prelude" is a groovy, pitched-down take on arguably one of the greatest disco records of all time.
