Review: Deep bass and pitched vocals combine with soulful rolling beats to create this lively little number from Spective. Jumping straight into huge, depthy basslines, each tune takes influences from the early days and transports them to straight-talking modern beats and fast paced breaks. This man's work has got heart and at the centre of every tune is a soulful sentiment, put in place by expertly chosen samples and sweet vocals. Chilled dancefloor stylings for the more sophisticated drum and bass connoisseur.
Review: Working together once more this time for Soul Deep Exclusives and available also as a freshly pressed 12", these are two instant classics. Featuring a classic Furney bassline that gets crowds bopping, it's a jazzy masterpiece of soulful rhythms and big rolling vibes. Holding up the flipside, Dynamic pops an all-over experimental feel that's as big as it is accomplished. There's something about that bassline that despite it's liquid sensibilities, really makes it hit hard. Both tracks are equally immersive, however for true innovation over anything else, Dynamic rules the roost. Well worth those hard-earned pennies.
Deeper Connection & Scott Allen - "Since You've Been Gone" - (5:58) 174 BPM
Review: Watch out, it's another Soul Deep Exclusive coming at you direct from Colorado and the UK courtesy of two vastly underrated artists locked in on the Soul Deep rollcall. Mixing deep bass with bootyshaking breaks, these tunes were made for dancing. Make way for the collab on the flip; fresh sounding and full of cinematic atmosphere, it's a track that just keeps on giving.
Review: Phase 2 shows off his South American flair with these three beauties, which travel back to a time when beats were smooth and keys were lounge-jazz-lite and bass rolled deep and chilled. On tunes "Pushin' On" and "Leave Me Alone", this man's jazz sensibilities shine through, offering a fresh look at soulful drum and bass, taking it on a more sophisticated, hugely danceable tip. More for the hip-shakers than the head-nodders. Introduce yourself.
Review: mSdoS and Malaky - two of Soul Deep's most reliable family members - hook up for a couplet of soul-coated rollers, and the result is a seasonal sonic sensation. "Autumn Leaves" whirrs and purrs with trembles of delicate piano touches, harp licks and an undulating sub bass arrangement. "Strings Of Relief" is a little heavier on the rhythm front, pushing and shoving with big bold hi-hat splashes and sweeping strings. Both live up to Soul Deep's continuously high, yet impressively understated benchmark.
Review: When Soul Deep catch up with a new producer, you know they're something worth writing home about. Techy and crisp, the Sao Paulo-based beatmaker has been creating tunes for a little while now, but it's only with this EP he's really showing his true colours. With punchy beats and a keen ear for detail, there's a touch of early '00s club tracks to some of his tunes, making them all them more valuable in dancefloor currency terms. Mixing it up through jungle breaks and even more experimental bassy productions, this definitely marks him as a man to watch.
Review: If you know anything about liquid D&B then the words 'Soul Deep' should bring a huge beaming grin to your face. Responsible for some of the finest new and upcoming talents in soulful and liquid drum and bass, if you've not come across them before, get ready to have your mind blown. From the old-school Motown sampling of Capiska's opening track to Phase 2's jazzy but dark "Parallax", the opening of the LP is distinctly mellow and moody, and there's one feature throughout that you may have noticed - these artists are either newly discovered or recently acquired by Soul Deep. The perfect sonic directory for brand new liquid. Enjoy.
Review: Funkware is the latest funk-fuelled drum & bass upstart to grace the impeccable cast of Soul Deep's liquid players. Previously seen on Good Looking, Liquid Tones and DNBB, his is a sound tweaked and twisted through years of funky and Balearic house, soul and jazz, mashed up into a love for drum & bass. Never taking itself too seriously but with the dancefloor-perfect beats to take each tune from headphones to 2am mashup, each tune is a journey around summertime Brazil, Spain and Miami. Spot on sunshine sounds from a Bulgarian mastermind. Who's gonna argue with that?
Review: Shodan & Cosmology on Soul Deep Exclusives is a combination and a half, a blend of creativity and curation which was always certain to produce some pretty spectacular results. Well, the results a three-tracker of sultry progression and gentle textures, a selection of tunes that tickle both the heart and the head. 'The Hardest Times' is the collaborative track and probably the best, with a low-key but always present percussive section and a gorgeously written double-bass bassline that's subtle in all the right ways. 'First Light' is more featherweight magic, with an expansive but restrained back end and lovely, vibrant drums. 'Lucky Strike' is the outgoing of the bunch and ties off what is absolutely top selection of liquid cuts.
Review: Emotionally deep liquid from a seasoned pro, Flame takes us through a spacey soundscape of jazzy drums and flangey synths in opening track "Lost Ways". Chopping up vocals and throwing them in over a deep bass wobble, this has to be one of his most interesting compositions so far. Flip it over and you've got an icy world of rattling hi-hats and whispering brass whistling over the most satisfying bass wub you've ever heard. Very, very nice work from Flame. Do not miss.
Review: A beautiful, leveled-out collection of flowing liquid tunes from Leeds-based producer Toby Tinwell. Bringing precision and class to soulful melodies and soaring atmospherics, from the icy lushness of "Foundations Of Love" to the deep bassline and jazzy inflections of "Icarus" featuring sexy vocals from DnBethh, this is a strong release from one of Soul Deep's most exciting new proteges. Delicate and touching but somehow deep and weighty enough for (admittedly more chilled) dancefloors, this is something special. All eyes on Colossus.
