Review: Two classy and authentic-sounding slices of 'new old' funk/soul here, coming from Daytoner, a Cornwall-based six-piece whose name should be familiar to most scene devotees following the success of their 2018 debut album 'Off The Hook'. 'My Sweet Baby' is an uptempo affair, reminiscent most immediately of the Dap Kings but with enough northern soul-like energy in the beats department to make it a safe bet for the mod clubs, too. 'Shout Love' plunders an altogether deeper, dirtier side of the 60s soul scene for inspiration, with gloriously raw Hammonds, blaring sax and testifyin' male/female soul vox.

Review: Veteran British downtempo producer George Evelyn aka Nightmares On Wax presents his ninth studio album on the esteemed Warp Records. Featuring 15 new tracks, on Shout Out! To Freedom...' Evelyn encouraged all the guest artists to 'make music inspired by what freedom means to them'. Some of the highlights include the evocative Balearic beats of "3D Warrior" (feat Shabaka Hutchings & Haile Supreme & Wolfgang Haffner), the dope urban swagger of "Wikid Satellites" featuring neo-soul artist Greentea Peng, and the jazzy sunset feels of "Isolated" (feat Pip Millett & Sabrina Mahfouz).

Review: If we're counting correctly this is album number nine from Speedometer in a recording career that stretches back 20 years. As such, if you have any interest at all in 'new old' funk and soul sounds you should know pretty much what to expect, so it's the cuts where they flip the script that are most notable. There's a distinct African slant to the cinematic 'Edge Of Fear', but it's 'Kashmir', a sitar-infused jaunt into psychedelic pastures, that's the standout. Elsewhere the UK veterans run the gamut from soulful acid jazz anthem-in-waiting 'Let's Start A Movement' to the raunchy, wigged-out Hammond jam that is 'Mo' Crunch'.

Review: Italy's Franco Sciampli, a 35-year veteran of the Rome club scene, brings us two re-edits of Barry White's 'September When I First Met You'. Original 12-inch copies of this 1978 soul/disco smoocher, something of an end-of-night classic, trade hands for north of ?15 so these new rubs represent good value for money even if Sciampli hasn't "done" a great deal to the track, other than dropping some of the verses in favour of looping up the chorus, with the main difference between the EdiThink and ReThink versions being a choice of string-led or percussive intro.

Review: These days you'll find her topping the bill at the world's leading jazz festivals, but back in the late 70s and early 80s Patrice Rushen was just another aspiring young disco/boogie chanteuse. It was 1982 album 'Straight From The Heart' that spawned 'Forget Me Nots' and propelled her to international stardom, but it's the album before that, 1980's 'Posh', that Strut is reissuing here. Stylistically very similar to its more illustrious successor, it's the perfect chance to get better acquainted with a supremely talented female artist who, despite some considerable successes, never quite attained the household name status that she surely deserved.

Review: Coco & Ben were a partnership between Benjamin Robinson of Ben And The Squeeze Tight Band and an uncredited singer (presumably the Coco of the title), who came together for one perfect and extremely rare single from 1979. Now Athens Of The North have dusted down these two smooth as silk soulful disco jams and given them a fresh pressing. 'Good Feelin' is a mellow, soul-feeding cut for Sunday afternoon reveries and toe-tapping country drives alike. 'See The World' is a more sultry affair for those who like their grooves to dig in a little deeper.

Review: Harold Matthews Jr is the Chicago house veteran formerly best known as one-half of Blak Beat Niks. Last year he released his debut album under his real name, 'Peripheral Visions' - a lyrically introspective and deeply personal affair that ran the gamut from deep, soulful house to boogie, neo-soul and broken beat. Now tracks from that album get remixed by the heavy-hitting likes of Glenn Underground, Sean McCabe, Wipe The Needle and Kaidi Tatham. Their reversionings are similarly diverse in musical style, ranging from the laidback, trip-hoppy Sisters & Brothers Mix of 'Who I Am' to the smooth house of Glenn Underground's rub of 'This Place', but rest assured: the soul needle stays firmly in the red throughout!

Review: Swedish producer Ture Sjoberg is a veteran with over 20 years of experience as Beatfanatic, Beatconductor and many other aliases. Originally starting during the original first boom of hip-hop and house, he delivered such classic albums as Adventures In The World Of No-Fi Beats and The Gospel According to Beatfanatic. Hands up if you remember those old blends on GAMM? Simply Beautiful is just that, a one track Beatconductor transmission from Sjoberg that sensitively updates Al Green's slow smoocher of the same name over seven minutes. Retaining most of the Reverend's '70s classic, Sjoberg has added some love-inducing 808 grooves for some late night amorous shenanigans. Smooth!

Review: Stephen James Wilkinson aka Bibio has been a big part of Warp's revival since the mid 2000's, and it's no surprise given the fact that this guy is as multi-talented as he is productive behind the mixing desk. "Why So Serious" is a chilled out, hazy boogie monster with gorgeous synth accompaniment and Olivier St Louis on the vocals, while "Make Up" goes more soulful thanks to its slow beat and St Louis' sublime singing. "Stress Me Out" heads back to the LA Boulevard for a ride around with the convertible, and "Night Falls" provides the gentle sort of cool down that's perfect for a night drive. Another cracker from Wilkinson, and also from London's Warp stable.
