Review: On Memories we find the Bristolian producer Actraiser letting loose on the evergreen Soul Deep imprint. Both "End Of Us" and "Memories" are trembling servings of vocal soul, polished with a wistful air of somnambulant sonic weight. "Juice Joint" flips the switch for a more rugged, jazzier flex. Not dissimilar to his Bristol forefathers, there's a touch of Full Cycle to the chop-slapping breakbeats and rich warm chords. "69 Sling" shows yet another side to Actraiser with beefier breaks and a cosmic blend of organic instrumental elements. Guaranteed to take you to another place.
Review: A truly mesmerising house tune from San Francisco's Cosmic Revenge, backed with some equally ace mixes from Ratcatcher and Beat Connection, making for a very strong single indeed from Car Crash Set. A delirious mixture of subtle pads, trippy arpeggios and laid back 808 drums characterises CR's original, which Ratcatcher (who previously collaborated with Doc Daneeka as Rodski) exploits for his minimal/tropical reworking. Beat Connection (who've just recently toured with Toro Y Moi) add a little more jacking skank to their version, boosting the spacey, sub-aquatic chords as well for good measure. Smart, forward thinking house at every turn.
Review: Nottingham's Killjoy claims he makes 'grimey UK bass music'. We think he's selling himself short with both his name and self-description - these tunes are more likely to bring joy to a party and they cover a bit more musical ground too. "Memories" takes a 4x4 wobble groove and applies some classy funk for good measure. Sticking with the wobble bass, "Tangle", goes harder and even throws in some string stabs, while the dubby "Inaudible Badness" takes us to more tropical climes.
