Review: We tend to think of All Day I Dream's particular brand of melodious and atmospheric house music as being summery and sun-kissed, but as this second "Winter Sampler" proves, many of the label's tracks that sound just as good on crystal clear winter mornings. Review: Over the years, Brenda Boykin has developed a worldwide reputation as a leader in jazz and blues vocal interpretation. This is chiefly due to her 'jump up style', which she defines as being a combination of 'bourbon and cornbread'. Review: Andrew Claristidge has been a wonderful revelation in 2016, and he's bossed the Mille Feuilles catalogue in fine style. Although his style often verges towards the abstract and surreal, Claristidge's productions do, indeed, offer plenty of dance floor charm, particularly with this revisiting of his Danser Ou Mourir LP. The whole album is remixed and re-edited by a mixture of known names, and even some emerging talents on the scene; people like The Hacker, a known techno demigod, are present and very much in full motion, as are Automat, Cosmo Vitelli, and 99LETTERS. Whether it's someone that you're already aware of or not, each one of these tracks represents the deeper end of the dance spectrum, and this is definitely a pretty daring excursion through cold, industrial beats, and a little bit of coldwave charm. Review: Oliver Rosemann takes a break from his Recorded Things label to deliver this killer EP for MORD. With a focus on hard-hitting sounds, Spells and Wonders is a no-nonsense techno release. "The Disappearing Act" gets the release off to a bruising start, with robust drums supporting relentless hi hats. This approach is mirrored on the steely, slamming "The Pledge and The Turn". Meanwhile, Rosemann adds a sense of drama to the release on "The Grand Illusion", where eerie string stabs cut through the piledriving rhythm. The tempo and intensity levels move up a few notches on "The Human Cannonball", while "Smoke and Mirror" rounds off the release with a menacing, bass-heavy coda.
