Review: Slow and steady wins the race, right? It should also win over that dancefloor of yours when it's as expertly crafted as this. As with all previous LTJ releases, "Funk Is On" is all about the groove and, indeed, the development thereof. New elements such as extra synth textures, vocal snippets and percussive tools introduce themselves slowly and politely as the track builds and builds with a sense of cool understated drama. Weighing in at a cool nine minutes, and not a dull moment, this is LTJ at his finest. But then what did you expect from Hot Groovy?
Review: In recent times, the mighty Beatconductor (AKA Beatfanatic) has spent far too much time re-editing strange Euro-disco and Balearic pop. We always thought this was a bit of a pity, given his immense skills and love of highgrade disco. Maybe he was subconsciously listening to our concerns, because "Sheriff" is his best for some time. It's pure disco gold, tweaking, teasing and gently extending an obscure, Western-themed disco/soul cut. The result is an undulating groover that boasts the sort of pin-sharp strings that sound like they're gently tumbling over the sassy, hustlin' disco-funk groove. Throw in a very cool vocal, and you've got something pretty special!
Review: An intriguing single-tracker from Brighton funk band The Grits, the brilliantly-titled "Mmwauu" is stripped down as a "Bonus Beat" release here - with a souped-up hip hop-meets-go go beat nicely aided by some shiny Trouble Funk synth stabs.
Review: Swiss duo In Flagranti, have been peddling their unique brand of leftfield, risque punk-funk-electro for about a decade on such esteemed labels as Kitsune, Kill The DJ and of course their own Codek imprint. They now return after a recent hiatus with "Cephalagia", a seven-minute odyssey into blissed-out Balearic waters, beginning with a hypnotic percussive loop before taking the slow train to pleasureville, like a cosmic-disco version of SueNo Latino. Highly recommended.
