Review: Batten down the hatches! Serial Killaz return to their collaborative series Killa Kollective with another pair of stinky heaters, this time with friends Jaydan and Lumia. Potentially liable for false advertising, 'Breeze' exceeds its title by many gale force miles as it hits like a gully hurricane and knocks us off our feet. 'Come True', meanwhile, does hit with a fresh gust as the euphoric vocal and rising chords hit those feels with emotional intensity. Both hit the spot with precision. Like all good Killas should!

He's hitting all the right spots, too. Five slabs of utter fire, highlights include the sweeping, bass drama of 'Nobody Else', the high voltage bass lighting strikes and spacious steps of the title track 'Alternate Universe' and epic production and strongarm vibe on 'Hustler' where massive pneumatic kicks plunge us deep into the dancefloor and the breakdown whisks us up into the heavens. This third annual mix-up is certainly no exception as they plough through 59 tracks - many of which are brand new exclusives - to paint a picture of exactly where drum & bass is at right now. A thick smelly melting pot, everything is thrown into the mix: Upgrade's spine-trembling harmonics on "The Voice", ruded-out bassline badness from Voltage ("My DJ"), various jump-up hybrid creepers from Russian newcomer Ozma, brand new dark wobble lava from Serial Killaz themselves ("Rudebwoyz") the list goes on and on. This is a huge package and it comes with a superb mix too. Treat yourselves or defeat yourselves.

Review: In terms of legendary status for labels over on the jungle/jump-up side of the scene, it's pretty hard to beat Serial Killaz. Run by the duo of the same name, the imprint has arrived with the second instalment of their mixtape series and it's unsurprisingly good. Full of big tunes from guys like Serial Killaz themselves, Vital Elements and Upgrade, it's the latter of these guys that takes the cake with 'Steel Drum'. You've probably heard this one doing the rounds and it's actually already been released, but oh boy what a tune this is: a screaming, siren-lake mash of grating metallic synths and punching drums all come together to make an unstoppably good piece of music. Don't sleep on the rest of these tunes though, and a special mention goes to DJ Hybrid's 'Beatbox' - naught jungle vibes.

'Badman Tune' earns its name with a wobbling sine that pushes up into another and 'Roast' is equally as badboy, stuttering jungle breaks masking a deeper sense of progression via a bouncing stab or two. 'Ways Of The Underground' is a lighter note to finish on, a recognizable sample flung out over a luscious backdrop of wispy pads that gradually escalates into something a tad darker. A quality EP with lots of variety.

Review: Having taken us through his innermost fears on "Nightmare World", Jaydan fires up the boosters and flies us all the way to Venus for part of Low Down Deep's planetary series. We take off with the criminally simple three note bassline that cascades mischievously over a rough rolling break. We break through the earth's orbit and blaze through the stars with the 2005-flavoured distorted middy bass hook before being hurtled woozily in Venus's orbit with raw sandpaper bassline on "Shut It Down". The euphoric opener and major key, tripped-out reverse bass riff of "Frightening" mark the moment we land on the planet and party. Next stop...Uranus.

Review: Usually when someone invites us into their "Nightmare World" we'd usually decline. Not because of the nightmares but because it's scientifically proven that people talking about their dreams is the most boring thing ever. Jaydan is the exception to the rule; every tale he tells is barbed and loaded with suspense. This new four tracker is no exception. From the grizzly, bet-wetting bass and slight tripletty swing of "Scary Movie" right the way through the Public Enemy homage "1983", Jaydan's dreamtalk is better than most people's realtalk.

Review: Discovered by the legendary DJ Hype, Leicester's Jamie Cope aka Jaydan's star is on the rise. The Smokin' Riddims main man has also released on labels like Innerground, Propaganda, Blueprint and Ganja Records: where he met Hype. It is grinding street level bass therapy on "Special Technique", its synth lead comes tearing through the speakers like a chainsaw cutting through metal while the relentless hum of the low frequency lurks beneath. Review: Jaydan is back to the grindstone again for another crack of the dancefloor whip, and the hardest working man in D&B is not letting up. Blasting to the fore with "Dark World", a bleaker, heavier sound emanates from the speakers, pushing more intensity than his usual dancefloor dashes. "Higher and Higher" is more like the man's usual dark-edged dancefloor filler, and "The Hard Way" begins with strings like a Hitchcock classic before launching into a full-on assault of bass and stepper beats. "Sensations" rounds off with a more technical approach, adding depth and weight to odd vintage film clips. Total smasher.

Review: With a plethora of artists to choose from, Volume 6 takes a look at the more experimental beings on Hype's roster, to interesting effect. Mob Tactics set the whole show in motion with Elephant Man in a dancehall-inspired club banger cut with insane bass and high-stress sound effects. Total Recall makes an appearance in the Eastern-influenced "Ethnic Origins", taking jump-up to new heights. Playaz favourite Survival adds a trademark neuro touch to fastmoving breaks and eerie atmospherics, and Jaydan show's a sensitive side with the crisp, rolling "She's Heaven". A mature sound from the Playaz crew.

Review: Leicester's very own noise maker Jaydan has had more jump up hits that you've had hot dinners. From not so humble beginnings at Propaganda and Blueprint back in the day, he's back on Playaz, showing Hype what he can do with a big squelchy bassline and techy, futuristic beats. This EP shows a real progression in his sound, from the huge rumbling energy of "Lonely Days" to the sneaky speakeasy jazz sampling of bassy stepper"1952", it's obvious that our man is looking to broaden his horizons. And why not? When you've got the talent, no genre's gonna hold you back. There are still the big dancefloor destroyers you expect, but they're interesting and more experimental. He's on fire right now.

Review: A couple of smoldering jump up bangers here from Renegade on the Smokin Riddims imprint as he teams up with Jaydan for "Dead People" and goes solo for "Late Night Flex". "Dead People" starts out as it means to go on with eerie sweeping atmospherics, stuttering beats and grimy mid range mayhem. Showing off both producers skills to huge effect, this is definitely one to bring to the dance. Accompanying cut "Late Night Flex" harks back to jungle while looking to contemporary D&B in a glorious fusion of styles.

Review: Having brought us some excellent re-workings in the past two installments of The Flavours series, part three has yet more treats in store from the ineffable Playaz camp. First up is Basher's remix of the legendary DJ Hype track "Peace, Love & Unity" - the soundtrack for a whole generation of junglists. Next is Jaydan's "Back Here (feat. Mia Sylvester)" with its progressive house-esque intro and grinding mid range and searing snares. Then it's over to Shimah for "Origin Of The Cave" - another more stripped back, spaced out venture before jump up reigns supreme again in "Coming In Stealth". Sub Zero's "Digital Blues" shows another side of the producer on a lilting, liquid vibe, before the low-slung splendor of Rewind's "Hunts Her Down".

Review: A superbly executed EP here, with VIP re-works from some of the key bods from the Playaz camp - the ineffable don of wobble jump up, DJ Hazard and his cohorts Erb N Dub, Legacy, Original Sin and brother Taxman, plus Friction and Nu Balance and newcomer Jaydan. First up is a delectable re-interpretation of massive 2011 hit "Food Fight" which draws out the vocal and juxtaposes it with grizzled bass. Next is "Alaska (VIP)" which is a glorious, fast-paced explosion of sound, and special mention must be made of the wonderful "Casino" VIP by Original Sin plus mid noughties classic "Robocop" which is updated by Taxman. Jaydan rounds things off in rowdy fashion with a VIP of "Driller Killer". An expansive package and a must buy.

Review: An attempt to steal the crown from Shy FX and his Diary Of A Digital Soundboy, Origins Of A Rudeboy takes D&B back to its roots with rattling amens, driving gunshot stabs and pummelling bass in abundance in "Deception". Next up is nostalgia filled "Original Rudeboy", with jungle chirrups, a snaking b-line, ragga vocal and clapping beats calling the shots. "Big Dog" changes the tone with tense discordant strings and hissing hi-hats. Falling into a thunderous growling drop with gruff, barking breaks and a Heist-like patina, it's a gnarly one before Jaydan finishes up with an ode to Goldie's legendary institution with "Reece Headz". Expect the classic reece bassline and melancholy instrumentals of Metalheadz but with Jaydan's je ne sais quois.
