Review: London-based newcomers In Dat Groove describe themselves as "a jazz/lounge project" and here they make their debut on DJ Spen's Unquantize label with a track produced in collaboration with Boston-based vocalist Lee Wilson. In its Original form, 'Give My Love' is essentially an R&B cut, though it'd play equally well on many soulful house and broken beat floors. The label boss's refix adds a rock-solid 4/4 kick and pushes the track more decisively into soulful house territory, but for this writer it's L'Amour Disco's rerub that takes the gold, as the mysterious UK producer reworks 'Give My Love' into an 80s boogie groover.
Review: Boston singer-songwriter Lee Wilson is perhaps best known for his work with the likes of Kenny Dope, Todd Terry, Reelsoul, Mr V and many more, but he's sailing under his own flag on this cut for Saucy Lady's Dippin' Records label, which is also based in Boston. 'Do Better' is a soulful house jam that, to these old ears, has something of the flavour of 00s classics like Erro's 'Change For Me' or Shaun Escoffery's 'Days Like This', and that's served in your choice of two mixes: the smooth-rolling Original or the slightly bumpier and more stripped-back Monolog Reprise.
Review: Regular collaborators Coflo asnd Lee Wilson are no strangers to Tooli and Mad Mats' Local Talk label; in fact, this two-tracker marks their third appearance on the esteemed Swedish house label. They begin with the deliciously warm and confidently soulful 'Quiet', where Wilson delivers an impeccably emotional lead vocal atop a bouncy Afro-house beat, jaunty bass, lively organ stabs and bubbly electronic motifs. Add in some bonus percussion and drum machine hits and you have a sublime slab of 21st century dancefloor soulfulness. On 'Wait', the pair opts for an even deeper and dreamier sound, with Wilson's distant-sounding vocals weaving in and out of undulating electronic melodies, ocean-deep pads and some sublime melodic flourishes.
