Review: In a world awash with endless re-edits from the "stick a 4/4 kick under it and go to the pub" school of thought, it's always nice to come across a producer who takes a slightly more original and inventive approach to plundering the back catalogues of others. Step up Stockholm native Ture Sjöberg, AKA Beatconductor, who here delivers an album-length EP packed with re-edits and mash-ups that do just that. Putting Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep' vocal on top of chunks of Survivor's 'Eye Of The Tiger', for instance, really shouldn't work on paper, but when coming out of your speakers it most certainly does! Elsewhere you'll hear bits of The Eurythmics (several times), Sister Sledge, Earth Wind & Fire, Yazoo, The O'Jays, Mariah Carey, Christopher Cross, Post Malone and more, all shaken AND stirred into something new and interesting... worth checking for sure.

Review: Earlier in the year, Multi Culti dropped the first collaborative album from MD Pallavi and Andi Otto, a decidedly cosmic and otherworldly, but undeniably alluring and accessible affair entitled 'Songs For Broken Ships'. This expansive remix package sees a wealth of artists give their spin on tracks from the set. The hits keep coming through out, from Simon De Kunovich's bleeping, intoxicating and heady deep house interpretation of 'Prayer To The Clouds', and Auntie Flo's South African Kwaito-influenced re-wire of 'Clockshop', to Bliz Nochi and Emi Jourjou's head-nodding downtempo rework of 'Velvet Flicker' and Poligra's sitar-sporting outsider house take on 'Puglisi'. Hannah Lee's deep, dark and tribal version of 'Prayer To The Cloud' is also very special.

Played by: Mike Nasty
Review: Mike Nasty is one of the more storied operatives on New York's deep house underground, with a bulging catalogue of singles and EPs to his name. 'Black Planet' is his first full-length excursion and does a terrific job in showcasing his trademark sound - an immersive and musically rich take on deep house full to bursting with fluid pianos, subtle jazz references and addictive basslines. Highlights include gorgeous and breezy opener 'Cosmic Funk', the luscious Latin horns and soulful flavours of 'Gimme The Rhythm', the Osunalde-esque wonder that is 'Mother Earth', the stretched-out and the wobble bass-propelled Omari Clarke collaboration 'Streets of Rage'. A trio of top-notch dancefloor dubs - interpretations of other cuts across the collection - completes a fine set.

Review: Peza is a shady re-edit hero, whose previous releases have created all kinds of a stir in the disco world. This latest EP, Subway, for the esteemed Midnight Riot, has already notched up some serious pre-release support from the likes of Andy Weatherall and Horse Meat Disco. One listen to the four tracks included here and you can tell why - we get everything from some slowed-down Eurythmics ("Stranger") to the deep and spacey funk grooves of "You Ain't Never" via the female disco/clavinet interface funk of "Do You Have Any?".

Disco Baby (original mix) - (5:00) 120 BPM
Review: Three tracks in a total of five mixes make up this latest offering from Serbian main man Tonbe. First up is 'Tonight', which tops a walking bassline and plinky-plonk 80s synths with a very sweet n' poppy female vocal, though the latter's obviously absent from the accompanying instrumental. 'Ruler & Queen' is a quirky, shuffling affair that's likewise available with or without the plainitive vocal, but for this reviewer's money the standout here is 'Disco Baby', a contemporary boogie-style jam with an indecipherable male vocal and more bounce 'n' wiggle to its bottom end than is frankly decent.

Steven Kimber - "I Wanna Be The One" (Drop Out Orchestra extended remix) - (6:03) 120 BPM
Review: Boogie Angst's series of club-focused, compilation style EPs can always be relied upon to deliver the goods. Predictably, this third volume in the ongoing series is packed to the rafters with tasty musical treats. Label bosses Kraak & Smaak lead the way with 'Fitipaldi', a Clavinet-sporting slab of Italo-disco influenced cheeriness that's available in both original mix and extended version variations. You also get two takes on Drop Out Orchestra's kaleidoscopic, string-laden disco-boogie rework of Steven Kimber's 'I Wanna Be The One'. Elsewhere, rising star Pontchartrain dances his way through nu-disco-influenced piano-house territory on 'Cheap Plants', King Mutapa reaches for warming Rhodes keys and jazzy disco bass on the deep house influenced 'Gimme That Funk' and FUTVRST offers up a filter-heavy exploration of French Touch influenced mid-tempo disco-house.

Discreet Moment Thing Pt 2
7
Discreet Moment Thing - (5:13) 123 BPM
Lady Cherry - (5:42) 120 BPM Hot
Review: After three years away, Maurice Uzzan has returned to the Life & Death label with a two-part EP that cannily showcases the growing depth, variety and complexity of his dancefloor-focused productions. 'Discreet Moment Thing', the title track of the dual EP, kicks off this second volume, offering an attractively pulsating, occasionally foreboding workout that boasts distinctive nods towards both EBM and new beat - all stabbing, sequenced synth-bass, stuttering (and decidedly hallucinatory) vocal samples, sweaty drums and jacking intent. He moves further back in time for inspiration on 'Lady Cherry', whose warming chords, squelchy synth bass, twinkling keys, unfussy machine drums and pleasingly 1980s-sounding lead lines sound like they were inspired by Pet Shop Boys' first two albums.

Dra Te Haelvete (In Flagranti remix) - (6:48) 119 BPM
Review: Comedian Espen Beranek Holm might seem like an unlikely Norwegian disco pioneer, but his 1981 single "Dra Te Haelvete" - a sweary, guitar-laden Italo-disco chugger about a man's efforts to get high - has long been a favourite of adventurous Norse DJs. Here, Todd Terje's Olsen Records has decided to give it a re-release, with the man himself providing a trio of reworks. There's a delay-laden, radio-friendly Edit, a strutting, stripped-back Disco Dub, and a thrillingly alien and out-there Acid Mix (which, typically, also features a Clavinet breakdown). This expanded digital package also includes a dubby, punk funk flavoured interpretation from Prins Thomas, and a rubbery disco-punk rework by In Flagranti.

Dub Syndicate - "Early Mafia" - (4:41) 68 BPM
Review: This second instalment of Adrian Sherwood At The Controls is as highly anticipated as the first chapter, and perhaps boasting even more quality across its 16 masterful re-edits of 80s and 90s dub-infused classics. The texture is Sherwood through and through, with the producer bringing that inimitable On-U Sound flair to each and every production he touches. Here, we have mainly material from the 1980s, a fine blend of post-punk and dub that makes total sense together; the highlights and must-haves include Pankow's "Boys & Girls" from 1987, "Music & Science Madness" by the great Lee Scratch Perry from the same year, and 1990's "Hold Some Version" originally from African Head Charge. To be fair, though, you should just hit the old ALL button when opting for download.

Simon Says - "Virago" - (5:32) 119 BPM
Vega Voga - "Gradus Ad Parnassum" - (3:12) 115 BPM
Review: In keeping with the approach favoured by previous volumes, the third edition of From Above covers a lot of ground. Despite this, it also manages to maintain a cohesive identity: tracks from Danse Alice, Roe Deers and Justine Forever - whose "Viral" is peppered with seductive French vocals - may differ in tempo, but all resound to a throbbing, electronic aesthetic. There are some exceptions to this rule, most notably Damien Vandesande's downtempo "Star Glide". However, it's only a minor deviation and a similar feeling is audible on non-dance floor moments like C.A.R.'s torch song "Silk Pistol" and the haunting electro disco of Frontinn's "Correct Settings".

Review: The title here's misleading - as a digital-only label, And Friends releases don't really have B-sides - but we'll let them off because 'B-Side Tunes' is as fine a label 'best of so far' comp as yours truly has heard in a while, covering as it does a dazzling array of contemporary dancefloor styles. Rolling, summery nu-disco vibes dominate, but from the garage-y organ grooves of Cosmocomics' 'Make My Love Brighter' to the wigged-out jazz-funk/disco of Uptown Funk's 'Slidin'', and from the peaktime strut of Ezirk's fairly self-explanatory 'Saxophizzle' to Ferdinand Debeaufort's truly sublime, 70s-sounding 'Like The First Time' - which blends elements of disco, mellow Bill Withers/Labi Siffre-esque soul and west coast rock, then tops the lot with a proper earworm of a strings flourish - there's PLENTY to enjoy here. So dive on in!

Review: Now we truly have stumbled onto a gem of a project with this one as legendary Circus Records founder Flux Pavillion returns with a full-length album project, as always, exploring the more colourful side of electronic dance music. Standing at an incredible sixteen tracks, the project is a spectacular showcase into the full range of Flux's musical ability, from the euphoric arrangements of 'I Believe' alongside Asha and 'You & I' alongside Kata Kozma, to the more experimental side of future-funk on 20:25, featuring some fabulous work from The Chain Gang Of 1974. It forms a truly outstanding listen from start to finish, with some favourites including the big room singalong flavours of 'I Will Stay' alongside Turin Breaks, the crunchy percussion of 'Twitterbird' and highly appealing vocal captures of 'Lions Cage', featuring the magnificent Nevve.

November Lovers - (4:43) 110 BPM
Slow - (5:18) 92 BPM
Review: Following releases on Kultura and Spa In Disco, the mysterious Nonsense come to Rare Wiri with three slices of heavily electronic, 80s-leaning nu-disco here. Opener 'Crime' is the one that's most likely to stick in your head, thanks to an insistent, lolloping bass groove and a vaguely Hot Chip-ish "red wine is not a crime" vocal loop - courtesy, presumably, of featured artist BOCXOD - while elsewhere, title track 'November Lovers' is a pleasant Balearic instrumental with keyboards firmly to the fore while 'Slow' does what it says on the tin and is a bass-y chug topped with plinky-plonk, Casio-like keys. But for dancefloor play, our money's on 'Crime'.

Somnia (Rayko Balearic remix) - (5:38) 113 BPM Hot
Review: Rare Wiri bring us the debut release from Aenian, a mysterious artist with seemingly no online presence whatsoever. His/her/their two originals operate in Balearic chill-out territory, with 'Somnia' sporting mournful electric guitar and a vocal chant from the Clannad school of thought, while 'Winter Recess' leans a little more to the melodic/progressive side and takes its name from its long, playground noise intro. Dark Punk Hippies and label boss Rayko then bring the dancefloor mixes: both are in a synth-y, cosmic-inspired vein but the Hippies add rolling tribal drums while Rayko's rub is more of a blissed-out, end-of-night kinda thing.

Review: Silvia Trebbi (aka Miss Plug Inn) dropped her Shake Your Body album back in 2007, and since then she's moved to Berlin as Italo disco has yet to have a revival back home. Infiltrating the nu-Italo scene, Trebbi's "You & I" now appears on this Clone offshoot whose roster also includes the likes of Skatebard, Antoni Maiovi and Fred Ventura. The tune is sweet and catchy '80s pop a la Sally Shapiro, which is given a Casco-esque remix by The Rimshooters and a euphoric late 80s house revamp by Hard Ton.

Review: Definitely the poppiest release in this writer's reviews pile this week, but don't let that put you off because 'pop' isn't inherently a dirty word, is it? Not when it's done well, at least, and this most certainly is. In terms of overall mood we're somewhere between 'Balearic' and 'dream pop' territory here, with sugar-sweet, almost PC Music-ish fem vox and lots of sweeping, soothing synth washes, with the sing-song vocal phrasing on 'Throwaway' nudging it just ahead of the pack to these ears. Haters gonna hate, no doubt, but listen without prejudice and you'll find some delicate gems tucked away herein!

Review: Legend Alexander Robotnick is back serving up the latest release on his very own Hot Elephant label titled Simple Music. The concept fits any style of club music, born from a need to combine traditional music elements such as chords and melodies to create variations and keep the listener interested. Robotnick kicks off the LP with the typically wacky Italo style of "Babel" featuring vocoder which is a constant throughout, there's also the experimental synthpop of "Underpass", club oriented material like the soulful techno epic "I Want To Know" and ending with the tunnelling and psychedelic title track.

Review: As the title makes clear, Shir Khan's 'Exploited Club Trax' series - which here reaches its' eighth instalment - is not bound by a complicated concept: it's merely about making people dance... and ideally in the most energetic, enthusiastic way possible. The long-serving DJ has once again selected plenty of no-nonsense, peak-time ready treats, all of which are guaranteed to get dancers in a spin. There's plenty to set the pulse racing across the 15 tracks on show, with our picks including the fiendishly sub-heavy, mid-90s piano house rush of 'Hurts' by Black Hawks of Panama (featuring vocals from Bisi), the Italo-meets-robo-disco bounce of Packim's 'Tanzen', a brilliant booty bounce revision of Aiwaska's 'Imagination' courtesy of DJ Assault, and the 8-bit electro-disco of Levantine's 'Disco Relaxation'.

Review: Inspired by his belief in the similarities between his day job as an architect and his approach to music-making, Berzingue's second solo EP for Pont Neuf is a self-confessed showcase for the producer's love of exploring "different genres and formats, while staying true" to his "trademark sound". It's an undeniably attractive affair, with highlights including the dreamy two-step-goes-deep house loveliness of 'Panorama', the rolling, melody-rich deep house bump of 'Dehli' and the more sci-fi-sounding, early morning bump of 'Mausolee'. Elsewhere, 'Night Cruise' is an attractive roller built around a darting, squelchy-sounding bassline, crunchy drums and immersive pads, and 'One' joins the dots between electro, organ bassline-propelled garage and tactile deep house sonics.

Review: Paris-based Andres Komatsu should be familiar to those who like their electronic music bold, chugging and intoxicating. He's previously released on Nukod and Truth Underground, amongst others, and here makes his debut on the Nein Records label operated by scene stalwart Tronik Youth. There are two original productions to enjoy: the strobe-friendly, analogue disco sharpness of "Carcosa", and "Alban", a deepier, prettier and altogether more saucer-eyed take on the saucer-eyed, Italo-influenced nu-disco sound. Both tracks are also given the remix treatment. Tronik Youth makes "Carcossa" even rougher and heavier, mixing the original's throbbing melody lines with chunkier drums, before Gladkazuka re-interprets "Alban" as a distorted, analogue techno stomper.

4C Loop - (5:25) 120 BPM
Review: Following on from what has been a very tasty year indeed, Facta returns to the home imprint of Wisdom Teeth for a three track extravaganza, demonstrating some extremely cool production methods throughout. We kick off with the choppy, time-dance style drumwork and colourful atmospheric and almost acidic designs of 'Rose Red', before the title track 'Scales + Measures' lands with some incredibly vibrant percussive manoeuvres and synthy explosions. Finally, '4C Loop' takes slower drum rolls and more colourful sound design to round us off in style!

Review: Seb Wildblood's last release, critically acclaimed album 'Do You Feel It Too?', was an undeniable delight. Pleasingly, this EP for Oath, which marks his first outing since, is equally as inspired. He begins with 'Re-Location.zip', a pleasingly warm, dreamy and atmospheric breakbeat number underpinned by drowsy chords and weighty sub-bass, before joining the dots between nostalgic, acid-infused prototype progressive house (think early, rather than late, 90s) and Italian dream house on the similarly tactile 'Floor Science'. Title track 'Vitara 3000' follows, with waves of attractive electronics and eyes-closed synths riding a lusciously loved-up house groove, before Central delivers a chunky, bouncing and rolling revision of the same track.

Review: With five original tracks plus four remixes, you can call this an EP or album as you see fit. Either way, if you're a lover of Scandi-disco from the likes of Prins Thomas and Todd Terje - or indeed the spangly, 80s-tinged nu-disco regularly served up by Nang's revolving stable of eastern Europeans - then it's a collection that's well worth investigating. Bleeping, analogue-sounding synths are much in evidence throughout and positively demand that shapes be thrown on the dancefloor, while remix duties are taken care of by a couple of Scandi heavyweights, Per Hammar and the aforesaid Mr Thomas.

Borgie - "Danza Obscura" - (8:38) 115 BPM
Review: Italian DJ and producer Gianluca Pandullo aka I-Robots lines up six of his Electronic Emergencies classics - a label delivering gems from acts like Das Ding, Crash Course In Science and The Hacker to name only a few! Another such personality is Machinegewehr that fits the bill here with the I-Robot remake taking hold of the super synthy "Move Like Rays" that takes up residence alongside the Berlino-Den-Hague cosmic bunker italo sounds of "Want Need". Some slo-mo, space western vamps make themselves known again in Chris Davis' "Traction", while some faster obscure sessions come from Skeleton Head's "Beaten, Bloody, Bruised" (think Yello meets George Michaels). On top of that get some some tougher drums, post punk and new wave inspirations from Mutant Mass and Danza Obscura's star sailing "Borgie".

Review: As one of the most distinctive voices in Detroit techno, whatever the era, it's always an occasion when Terrence Dixon delivers a new album. True to form, this new one for 30D ExoPlanets follows up on a run of previous releases for Angel Molina's label in a supernova of fresh ideas that keep techno truly compelling. Even in the straighter climes of tracks like 'Final Results', there's a sense of space and reduction which challenges the mind rather than giving everything away too easily. No one operates quite like Dixon, and it's on immersive trips like this you realise just what he's capable of.

Swingin' Riot - (4:08) Hot
Upside Down - (4:39)
Outdoor Funk - (4:02) 131 BPM
Review: We love it when artists have the courtesy to do our job for us. Here Japetto has very kindly summarised the contents of this fine EP in the title. Actually that's not strictly true - Japetto is actually following the likes of X-Ray Ted and Shaka Loves You in Radical Mixtapes' acclaimed series of 'feature EPs' -Party Bangers. He's turned in some stellar work too - "Swingin' Riot" hails from the cooler end of the electro-swing spectrum, "Upside Down" sees Diana Ross go all hip house and "Outdoor Funk" sees Wilson Pickett given extra oomph in the drum department. Splendid stuff.

Don't Go (80 edit) - (3:44) 108 BPM
Review: Italian label Diverse Onde Sonore bring us what is, as far as we can tell, the first ever release from Karl King. The clue's in the mix titles here, with 'Don't Go' presented in Pop Extended and 80 Extended rubs (each complete with a matching radio edit) that differ primarily in the timbre of the drums that underpin them: the latter sounds like it's beamed straight in from c.1983-84 while the former wouldn't sound out of place on The X Factor. The Bruno Mars/Olly Murs-like vocal will be too much for some, but there's a market out there for slick 80s-informed pop sounds, and that's exactly where this is aimed.

Review: Ferry Lane Records launches its first release with the debut of the ascendant Leona Jacewska aka Charlie. Impressing many with her solid DJ and live performances, this release sees the Polish producer exploring disparate genres: Italo meets electro-pop on the icy cold allure of "Cold Inside" followed by the early '80's influenced synthpop of "Melodies Bring Memories" serving up something more upbeat and playful. It even comes with a remix by Centre Neptune chief Flemming Dalum as a digital exclusive.

Venetia - "The Night" - (6:46) 69 BPM
Review: For their second salvo, the team behind new Parisian imprint Silias Records have assembled a crack team of fast-rising international talents. Rising star Brooht, who recently impressed via a four-track outing on Mr Banger, peppers a sturdy, sweat-soaked analogue house groove with bleeps and warehouse-ready stabs on 'All Together', before Bangkok-based DOTT opts for alien melodies, twisted acid lines and bustling machine drums on 'Life in the Alley'. Flyov's 'Polygonal Funk' lives up to its name - think funky keyboard bass, fizzing electronics, sparkling stabs and sturdy drums - while Venetia's EP-closing 'The Night' sits somewhere between dark disco, acid house and the 'French Touch' flex of early Daft Punk.

Review: Fuzzy Logik follow up this summer's All My Love EP for Sweet and Sound with this new release on World Class, which is also the debut single for vocalist Myshy, backed with a slew of killer remixes. Fuzzy Logik's original of "playground" weaves a tightly rolling UK Funky beat around Myshy's catchy vocal action, complete with a jazzy, bright synth melody. Matt IQ provides two remixes; his Main Room mix takes things in a straighter 4/4 direction with peak time synth stabs, and an Electrotastic mix which brings some tropical heat in the shape of a conga-led rhythm and neon melody. Dexplicit takes things in a grime direction, filling his production with rolling snares and tense strings, while TopFlyte turns in a furious garage refix of warbling sub bass and clipped rhythms, and Audiothrapy's C Saw mix reworks it into a dubstep juggernaut. Fuzzy Logik finish up the reworks themselves with their own VIP version, which adds a darker note to the original's poppier tones.
