Come On Kerrier - (5:16) 135 BPM
Review: After releasing Luke Vibert's acid-heavy Ridmik set, Hypercolour boss Jamie Russell asked the Cornishman if he had any disco-flavoured Kerrier District material knocking about. He answered in the affirmative, and 4, Vibert's first full-length under the alias for a decade, was born. Although the project was initially inspired by Black Devil Disco Club's warped electronic disco (and, presumably, the smoother grooves of Metro Area), a decade on Vibert's approach is noticeably different. While the fluid synths, undulating disco basslines and cheery grooves remain in place, the intoxicating depth of the original has been replaced by a cheekiness more readily associated with Vibert's Wagon Christ pseudonym. It is, then, a different beast than previous Kerrier District outings, but no less entertaining.

Review: Despite Bruno 'Patchworks' Hovart boasting a discography packed to the rafters with successful forays into all sorts of vintage dancefloor styles, many were still surprised at the brilliance of the first Voilaaa album, On Te L'avait Dit. This follow-up is equally as impressive, and features 13 more trips into classic Afro-disco and tropical disco territory. With Clavinets, punchy horns, live percussion and Afrobeat bass to the fore, Hovart and his many collaborators - including a number of French vocalists with African heritage - variously pay tribute to all sorts of late '70s and early '80s dancefloor fusion sounds. The album includes tons of club-ready excursions, including the righteous "Problems", disco-tastic "Kemtane" and sweaty, high octane "Mbele".

Review: Alongside the likes of DP, DJ Falcon, Bob Sinclair and Etienne De Crecy during the height of the French Touch sound (heavily filtered disco loops set to tough house beats) were the mighty Cassius. So invested in the late '90s zeitgeist were they, Cassius went so far to name their debut album 1999! This album was huge that year and here were revisit it in remastered form (plus some extra goodies too). Highlights include the urgent shuffle of the title track, the awesome 808 electro jam "Crazy Legs" and the legendary Les Rhythmes Digitales 'Dreamix' of "Feeling For You." C'est bon

Video People - (5:12) 135 BPM
Played by: Vhyce, LE DISKO
Review: Ryan Davis AKA Nyra has enjoyed an eclectic career to date, moving from sleazy late night techno to deep house and nu-disco without skipping a beat. His latest missive on the Canoe imprint he established in 2017 - his third EP of the year - is naturally rather tasty, too. Opener "Both Of Us Knowing" is particularly potent, offering a sweaty and muscular late night mix of Italo-disco/Giorgio Moroder style synthesizer arpeggio lines, unfussy beats, glassy-eyed female vocal samples and psychedelic, acid-style electronics. "Video People" sounds like a vintage, mid-80s Bobby Orlando or Shep Pettibone production for the Pet Shop Boys - all cheery synth melodies and Hi-NRG influenced electronic grooves - while "Neon Glance" is as jaunty, bubbly and rushing any revivalist Italo-disco jam on Bordello A Parigi.

Jimmy Spencer - "Summertime" (original mix) - (2:17) 137 BPM
Played by: YAM WHO?
Review: It's always a joy when a new Under The Influence compilation arrives from Z Records HQ. Even better when it's curated by none other than Sean P, the veteran disco/boogie producer pal of Joey Negro. Sean's diggin' skills are so legendary he even had his own section in the Music & Video Exchange and here he puts these skills to use, rustling up 27 dance obscurities. Highlights include the lo-fi UK funk jam "Bye Bye Baby" by Joanne Ellis, the dubbed-out punky bass mantra "Trinidad Rock" by King David and the percussion frenzy of Jimmy Spencer's mad cover of "Summertime".

Superstition - (4:56) 135 BPM
Review: Next up on Katakana Edits is emerging edit wizard Gary Shepherd aka Streamer, an expat in Amsterdam who turns in a bunch of cheeky resplices here of some obscure covers and versions. From the deep, down and dirty rendition of Stevie Wonder's classic "Superstition" which gets high into the stratosphere, some spiritual African disco by way of reggae on a cover of "Lively Up Yourself" and likewise some more Jah dubwise shenanigans on the block rockin' beats of "Raggamuffin Soul".

Yogtze - "Please Hold The Line" (Fred Asquith remix) - (6:39) 135 BPM
Review: Running Back bring us four despatches from disco's more experimental fringes. The EP opens straightforwardly enough with Llewellyn's 'Synergy Bar', a lively, throbbing houser with hints of both disco and prog in equal measure, not to mention a distinctive fluttering topline. But Yogtze's pacy, EBM-ish 'Please Hold The Line' soon takes us into somewhat more leftfield territory, before John Noseda gives us 'Spiral Galaxy' - think John Carpenter trying his hand at Italo-disco. Lipelis X AC then close out the EP with 'Central Store', another Euro-inspired cut beamed straight in from around 1983 or so.

Converters - "Coming Days" - (5:40) 135 BPM
Review: Midnight Riot bring us a fourth collection of gospel-inspired house, disco and boogie. Mark Brickman & Yam Who's superb Vanessa Jackson-sung, disco-styled Praise Cats cover gets the ball rolling, the unmistakable tonsils of Kenny Bobian lend an authentically evangelistic feel to 'I Shall Not Be Moved', Yam Who? reappears in tandem with Brian Lucas on a cover of James Ingram's 80s soul classic 'Yah Mo' B There', prolific re-editor Jet Boot Jack gets busy on 'The Gospel According To Jack', and so it goes on... the devotional lyrics may be a bit much for some, admittedly, but if that's not an issue there's much to enjoy here.

Praise Breaks - "Faith" - (8:13) 135 BPM
Review: Midnight Riot's first celebration of gospel-fired disco and boogie, "Take It To Church", was rather special, so hopes are naturally high for this follow-up. Happily, we can confirm that Yam Who and company have once again nailed the brief. As with its predecessor, the 23-track set offers up a scintillating, soulful mixture of bumpin' gospel house (see Redsoul's superb "Born Again" and DJ Spen's bass-heavy tweak of Boorman's "God's Got It"), righteous disco-house (the Showfa, Alan Dixon, the piano-heavy stomp of Yam Who's "Tomorrow"), synth-laden gospel boogie (Dr Packer, Yam Who's tidy revision of Andre Esput's "Call Me"), breezy sing-alongs (Lux Experience) and plenty of dusty disco, electrofunk soul rearrangements (Divine Situation, Sweet Jubilees, Phil Jaimes). In other words, it's another essential collection.

Soul Fly Pt 2 (feat Dames Brown) - (6:10) 138 BPM
Review: The Sound of Detroit by one of it's unsung heroes, Amp Fiddlers new album Motor City Booty coming straight off the D Funk assembly line, a full on dance floor affair from Motown to P-Funk, Techno and Neo Soul. This 11 track album produced by Amp Fiddler & Yam Who? includes the massive 'Soul Fly' sounding like a Mark Ronson production had he been hanging out with George Clinton's Parlet followed by the bonafide P-Funk anthem 'Steppin' both featuring the stunning vocals by the Dames Brown girls. Amp Fiddler is credited for taking both a young J Dilla and also Q-Tip under his wing teaching them his Akai MPC techniques, setting the path for some of Hip Hops finest recordings which have defined the shape of things to come. His musical collaborations & current duties include: Moodymann's musical maestro, keyboard wizard for Theo Parrish's live band, a longstanding Funkadelic member, co-writer for Sly & Robbie, Prince, Maxwell, Jamiroquai & Seal to name a few.
