Firefly (Clap Clap remix) - (3:04) 99 BPM Hot
Review: Following the success of his recent LP Sundial (hyped by 6Music and more), Scotsman-in-OZ Jonny Faith, releases a new single from the LP, Neon, backed with both a new track and a remix. The former turntablist has grown musically somewhat over the years and with it's crisp and fizzy soul-hop meanderings, "Neon" is a great example of this development. Album highlight "Firefly" gets reduced into a sparse, killer tropical percussive jam by Clap Clap and newie "Revolve" wraps things up with a chiming, organic melange of rythmic beats and sounds.

Fixate - "Dead End" - (5:07) 93 BPM
Review: It's no secret that the team at Exit have a legendary catalogue, which they have decided to celebrate for their 100th official drop. This Part One of the "EXIT100" compilation series features some serious heavyweights, including Itoa, Dolenz, Sertone & Addison Groove to name a few. The pure range that we get is also awesome to take in, from Fixate's stunning drum production work in "Dead End", to the skippy, juke-inspired skips of "Tell Me Something" from Sun People and the acidic adventure we are taken on in Borderlandstate_the Best Kisser In L.a.'s "Minimal Input". We couldn?t round off without discussing "Wasted" however, as Dub Phizix dive down a truly unique avenue for them, unveiling a mind-melting soundscape that would leave a tear in the eye of the staunchest electronic music fan. Top quality stuff!

Legion Of Boom EP
11
Standard Affair - (4:46) 90 BPM
Review: Wow, well who would have expected a collaboration by two heavyweights in the bass game from different eras? This new Gutterfunk EP has brought together the talents of post-dubstep pioneer Addison Groove and jungle/d&b legend DJ Die; you can already imagine what these three blasters will sound like and, yes, you're probably close. "Standard Affair" is a footwork bomb that's given the extra dose of hypnotics, the former coming from AG and the latter from Die; "Legion Of Boom" is even more clearly a half-way house between the two artist's specialities thanks to some subtle jungle breaks, and "Dr Know" injects a layer of 303 magic to a deep and intricate juke pattern. Militant!

Straight Foxin' LP
12
Nima - (1:52) 90 BPM
Played by: Kellie Allen
Review: After releasing a wealth of EPs since making his debut in 2020, Malik Kassim is ready to unleash his first album, 'Straight Foxin', for the constantly inspiring Wolf Music Reordings. Framed as a kind of mixtape, with head-nodding interludes sitting side by side with club cuts, the 14-track set features a wealth of appearances from horn player Mauricesax, as well as collaborations with Bezzix (see the deep dancefloor jazz of 'Be Someone' and the organic deep jazz house of 'New Cribs'), Passion Deez (the skittish, uptempo deep house-goes-ghetto house warmth of 'Kush Love') and 'Nephews' (the deep, Bukem-influenced D&B flex of 'Bad Knees'). Throughout, Kassim offers a near perfect blend of dusty instrumental hip-hop, nu-jazz and the deepest and warmest of house grooves. Recommended!

This Detroit Thing Of Ours
14
This Recording - (0:06) 98 BPM
Review: Spanning an epic 46 tracks of ghetto tech, house, electro and techno bangers welded all the more to scratch tracks, footwork and straight up motor city bangers - DJ Godfather's This Detroit Thing Of Ours has landed. With each track segueing into the next the album also includes collaborations with DJ Deeon, Goodmoney G100 and King Saaidi to Gettoblaster & Missy - you find other badass collabs vai Lil Mz 313 ("That Booty"), to soulful yet dubbier-tranced out numbers with Ricky Burns ("Back It Up"). Furthermore there's the raw basslines of "It's Ghetto Tech" featuring Dan Diamond to some slurpy-sippin' midwest club vibes of "What Up" featuring Parkhouse. DJ Godfather, better recognise y'all.

That Booty EP
16
Back It Up (feat Ricky Burns - acapella) - (3:18) 94 BPM
Review: Another week, another DJ Godfather release. The veteran Detroit producer is in a creative purple patch right now, and That Booty is a reminder of the range and depth of his sound. It moves from the title track's primal ghetto tech swing -and Lil Mz 313's suggestive vocals - to the soulful, R&B-tinged groove of "Till It's All Gone". It too features a vocalist - in this instance it's Ricky Burns's seductive tones. Godfather delivers a reflective interlude in the shape of "Footwerkz". However, it's only a temporary pause and soon enough, he bounces back with the jacking, vocal-tinged ghetto of "Not Me" and "Smokin' Up Yo Weed".

Review: Mop Mop's voodoo jazz island concept undergoes a huge 15-part reconstruction process from artists vast and varied. Like the original album itself, the energy and pace flickers intemperately from euphoric steel drum emotional meltdowns (Simbad's dub of "Kamakumba") to off-beat new jazz showdowns (SoulParlor's remix of "Heritage") to crazed frenetic voodoo footwork fusion (Clap Clap's remix of "Let I Go"). Yet as disparate and disjointed as some of these sound, each reversion relates to the last with the same creative sense of subversive consistency as the original album. Welcome to Isle Of Magic - you know there's no return, right?

Oh No No No Remixes EP

Going Somewhere (Scratcha DVA remix) - (7:32) 93 BPM
Review: Canada's Jessy Lanza, recent LP Oh No, was rightly celebrated for its dream-like fusion of pop, RnB and synths. Now we get a selection of remixes of album tracks. First up, Morgan Geist of Metro Area delivers a celestial, high altitude nod-out version of "I Talk BB" that seems to take George Michaels' A Different Corner as inspiration. Elsewhere "Could B U" stays on the same lit vibe but sounds like Timbaland and Aaliyah bouncing on cotton wool clouds. Lastly "Going Somewhere", in the hands of DVA HI:EMOTIONS, is a collage of weird bleeps, vocal snippets and soft Fairlight melodies. Simply gorgeous.

Review: With 19 Hyperdub artists on show here, this intrigue of a collaboration to help Hyperdub commemorate its 15th year of operation sees the label connect with late night television network Adult Swim. The likes of Burial, Ikonika, Fatima Al Qadiri and Kode9 all sign in with tracks specifically made for the compilation, with stand out numbers coming from Skratch DVA via the toxic and percussive "Baka" alongside the white noise crackles and subtle dub and industrial techno grooves of Nazar's "Unruly". Other oddball highlights include Mana's "Climbing The Walls" and the slow march of Doona Kanda's "Perfume". Late night TV has never sounded so good.

Third Ear Transmission (feat The Spaceape) - (1:21) 94 BPM
Played by: Bigseuf, Kai Luen
Review: The big, bad Kode9 makes a much awaited return to his own Hyperdub stable with a new album, and that is exactly what we were wanting to hear from the one of the founding fathers of contemporary UK bass music. His explorative style is perfectly suited to the album format, and "Zero Point Energy" is the perfect opener to a stunning sequence of events - large folds of bass deconstruct over sci-fi sonics and sink into the pensive melodic flux of tunes like "Notel", and "Void". There is also plenty of beat-laden material here, so don't worry, and "Holo" even ventures into a bit of jump-up juke, but there's no point trying to dissect Kode9's music; the album is all made up of hybrid tunes, and it's exactly the sort of music that pushes boundaries further and genres to their very edges. Quality, of course.

Review: Whether it's because she's been collaborating with the likes of Rustie, or because she's released EPs for imprints like Unknown To The Unknown and the mecca that is Warp, Nightwave is just on the right side of 'hype' at the moment. We've been waiting for this new EP on Fools Gold for a while now, and we have to say that there isn't a single feeling of disappointment. Far from it. In fact, this is perhaps the producer's best work yet, which is saying a heck of a lot. As usual, she's morphed and deranged the footwork staple into something completely different, starting with the nutty beat folds of "Awesome", and then onto the dutty, grime-ridden groove that is the title tune, "Wavejumper". Drexciyan influences linger in the background of the entire release, of course, but our favourite tune of the lot is most certainly "Lava", a broken gunshot riddim boasting an intense level of low frequencies for any soundsystem...

Peshi - (3:07) 95 BPM
Review: Beat Machine are simply unstoppable these days, dropping bombs left, right and centre - and these guys really can refer to their output as being explosive! This time they come through with the dread bass of Kuthi Jijani, a debutant who's clearly understood the entire bass process from the get-go, and these five tunes are everything you'd want form your typical Saturday night bass bullets. Fire and fury are unleashed via the rolling punch of drums that drives "Peshi" forwards, while "Fluvial God Decompose Our Bodies" centres its efforts around the all-out cacophonous thanks to an unexpected wave of noise. "Serpent" is a new strain of highly abrasive d&b, the sort Noisia would be proud of, while "Yonder" steps back into more traditional 'step' territories; Ipman's remix of "Discarga" is a hypnotic, sinister ride down the impenetrable wormhole of bass. TIP!

Dev79 & Sideswipe - "Emerald Tree Boa" - (4:24) 97 BPM
Review: Now, this latest project from Dev79 goes by the name of 'Can't Fit In A Box', and we really feel that despite it being exactly what is says on the tin, Black Marble Collective have swapped boxes with Pandora as carnage in unleashed. This one kicks of with 'You & I Is Us', which features additional vocal work from MC Elixir, layering his potent vocals over a jukey, breaks hybrid, destined to damage dances. This is then followed strongly by the energetic vocal stabs of '215 Alive' and the hardcore nostalgia contained within the arrangement of 'Emerald Tree Boa'. finally, 'Where Kings Are Bred' strips everything back to cool bass sounds and breakbeats, rounding every up with a dash of finesse.

Review: The team at Black Marble Collective have maintained an incredibly consistent high standard throughout the course of 2019, with this latest compilation providing the cherry for the metaphorical cake they really do deserve. They assemble a goliath 16 track collection including original heat from the likes of DJ Ends, Jah Bliddie, Andrew DIFF, Dev79 and more. For us there are a couple of stand out favourites, including 6Blocc's incredibly emotive rethink 'For Life', originally featuring A.Fruit. We also love the rave-ready basslines of Dom Corleone's 'Yo Body' VIP mix and the junglist slices of 'Underground' from Alexandre.
