Review: Livingstone Studio reissue a Nigerian disco album that first saw the light of day way back in 1983. The album opens in fine style with the raw funk-fuelled disco workout 'Get It Down', and while not every track is a killer there's enough here to warrant investigation by those who like to push the envelope in their DJ sets, with 'Holiday Action' rocking chicken scratch guitars, sing-song vox and squawking sax, and the latter half of the album evidencing a more obviously "Afro" sound (on 'Delectation' in particular), while special mention should be made of 'Friday Night', a gloriously 70s-sounding slab that conjures images of finger-clickin', Afro-sportin' dudes in matching velveteen suits.

Review: "Wonderwhy" was one of the many highlights on Llorca's jazz-funk-fired 2017 album, "The Garden". Here it gets the remix treatment, with Crazy P man Chris Todd (under his now familiar Hot Toddy moniker) and Lazy Days boss Fred Everything doing the honours. Todd's vocal "Remix" and "Instrumental" versions are predictably musical and melodious, sitting somewhere between spacey, synth-heavy nu-disco, fizzing jazz-funk and rolling deep house. Fred Everything takes a different approach, opting for a "Space Edit" and "Space Edit Instrumental" that slightly dub out and heat up the original's 95 BPM jazz-funk/disco fusion flex.

Review: French soul jazz merchant Ludovic Llorca returns for his first album since 2001's well received New Corner LP on F Communications where he was blessed with being the resident jazz act after the departure of St Germain for Blue Note Records. Llorca remained surprisingly quiet ever since but the guy is back with a vengeance on this great album, The Garden. "Wonderwhy" channels the best of Curtis Mayfield's signature sound, the deep ballad "Addiction Days" is backed by a strong strings section for Hayley Hiatt's heart wrenching vocals and lead single "Waiting" will get a spring in your heel much like it did for us when we heard this powerful funk explosion in the office that day!

Review: It's not for us to second-guess the motivations of others, but more recent installments in the Lolita series do seem to have eschewed the "anything goes" approach of earlier volumes in favour of curating more focused, stylistically cohesive collections. So '31' follows on nicely from last week's disco-oriented '30', as the Lolitas mine obscure early 80s boogie, Eurodisco, Italo and electrofunk nuggets including The Jammers' 'Be Mine Tonight' from 1982 ('274'), One Two Three's 'Runaway' (a 1983 Bobby O production that now gets reworked as '275'), Clive Davis & Brainchild's 'Mystery Man' from 1984 ('280') and more.
