One Evening - (6:17) 112 BPM Hot
Hold You Tight - (6:39) 110 BPM
Baby Doll - (6:39) 115 BPM
Review: In little over a year, Ziggy Phunk has become one of the re-edit scene's most reliable producers, delivering killer cuts that inhabit the no-man's-land between faithful scalpel rearrangement, re-production, and subtle rework. Here he returns to Rare Wiri with three more essential floor-slayers. Choose between the rubbery slap-bass, swinging drums, swirling strings and crunchy Clavinet lines of "One Evening", the sparkling, synth-laden electrofunk cheeriness of "Hold You Tight", and the decidedly Balearic, Italo-propelled Euro-shuffle of "Baby Doll". All three tracks sound like they were tailor made for al-fresco DJ sets, be they in Welsh woodland, on Ibiza terraces, or aboard Adriatic boat parties.

Played by: Rayko
Review: This latest release from Rayko's Rare Wiri stable should have you covered whatever end of the disco spectrum you're most comfortable at, as 'Monody' and 'Much Better' - two cuts that first appeared on the 'Capriccio' EP back in December - get given the remix treatment. If you're a fan of cosmic and Italo vibes, 80s sci-fi soundtracks and synthier styles generally, then you'll want to head for Sauco's rub of the former, a bleepy throbber with Daft Punk-ish overtones around the edges. If you're more traditionally minded, on the other hand, then check out the label boss's refix of 'Much Better' for some killer sax action.

Thinking About You

You Got Me - (5:12) 120 BPM
You Got Me (Boogietraxx remix) - (6:08) 125 BPM
Review: Three tracks in a total of six mixes make up this EP from Nice, France-based Vigi, which comes on Rayko's Rare Wiri label. 'Thinking About You' itself starts life sounding like an early 80s AOR/yacht rock excursion - think Toto or Foreigner - while the Extended DJ Mix chucks a 4/4 kick underneath it, but it's the ever-reliable Manuel Costela who comes with the most obviously floor-friendly of the three rubs. Elsewhere on the EP, 'You Got Me' mines 80s boogie sounds and comes complete with an elevated-tempo Boogietraxx Remix (my pick), while the mellower 'Somethin' I Want' comes on like a Balearica-boogie meltdown.

Mare (Rayko remix) - (5:39) 120 BPM Hot
Mare (Saint-Loup-En-Bray remix) - (5:30) 122 BPM
Review: Italy's Vincenzo Montefusco teams up with fellow Napoletano Anya Rei, a DJ, producer and vocalist who heads up the Elettra Music label, for this joint outing on Rayko's Rare Wiri. 'Mare' in its Original form is a midpaced affair with shimmering Balearic synths and quite a poppy vocal from Ms Rei. The label boss then gives the track a makeover that sits somewhere around the Italo-disco/progressive house cusp, while the EP's completed by a remix from Mexico's Saint-Loup-en-Bray, who throws caution to the wind as he ditches the vocal and unleashes some seriously gnarly, angular synths.

Review: Hearty congratulations to Rayko, whose Rare Wiri label has just turned ten. To celebrate the label's decade in dance, the Spanish producer has put together this fittingly fine collection of archive cuts. It features no re-edits, just original tracks and associated remixes. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the Clavinet-sporting crunchiness of Limpdisco's compilation-opening "Moving To '70s" and Spiritcatcher's D-Train style NYC boogie revision of Julian Sanza's "Can't Stop The Feeling", to the jazz funk-flecked deep house/disco fusion of Nowsense's "Smile" and Situation's wonderfully atmospheric electro-acid revision of James Rod's "Disco Rocket". Naturally, there are plenty of Rayko tracks and remixes dotted throughout, including a wonderfully spacey and bass-heavy take on Ilya Santana's "Electrik Mind".

Review: After 12 years in the game, Spanish nu-disco stable have reached the 100-release milestone, and they're celebrating with an imaginatively titled compilation packing eight brand new tracks that have been handpicked by label boss Rayko. Obviously, with eight tracks from as many artists there's a fair degree of stylistic variety on offer, but the emphasis generally is on heavily electronic grooves - sometimes veering into Balearic/coffee table pastures, sometimes served with a darker, more leftfield twist. It's really more of a home listening album than a collection of club cuts, but for dancefloor purposes start with the contributions from Ilya Santana and Sauco...

Review: Following a fine retrospective of "original productions and reworks" earlier in the month, the Rare Wiri label has prepped another killer compilation to help mark the imprint's 10th birthday. This time round, boss man Rayko has gathered together some of the label's most potent re-edits. The quality threshold remains impressively high throughout, with highlights including James Rod's chugging and cheery disco-boogie shuffler "So Easy", the dreamy deep house throb of In Flagranti's loopy version of "Walking In The Rain", the sparkling saccharine soul/jazz-funk flex of Yam Who's revision of "In Your Eyes" and the pulsating Italo-disco/disco-funk fusion of Ziggy Phunk's take on "One Evening". Throw in a clutch of top-notch Rayko re-edits and the result is an essential collection of floor-focused reworks.

Review: Spain's Rare Wiri label bring us their second retrospective label comp, which follows on the heels of last year's Vol 1, and just a quick glance at the artists involved - who include Ilya Santana, Rayko, The Beat Broker, Yam Who? and Ziggy Phunk - will give the initiated a pretty good idea of the quality on offer! Gazeebo's 'Soul Dance' is rooted in the deep funk of the early 70s, Phunk's 'Let It Move You' is a brass-spangled disco-house groover, Rayko's 'B-Nano' has an 80s Italo vibe, 'Whishbone' by Parissior channels late 70s Euro-disco, and so it goes on for six more very playable nu-disco bullets.

That philosophy is fully explored here on Retro Future Disco, bringing all kinds of disco approaches to the table. Generally speaking it's synth-tastic grooves inspired by Italo and cosmic disco that lead the charge here - though, given the talent roster, you'd expect a certain degree of stylistic variety, and you'll find such in Buchan's rawer, more funk-leaning 'Family Kings' and the soulful vibes of The Beatbroker's 'Belong 2 Me'.

Review: There was a time when Balearic meant "play what you want, as long as it makes people dance"; then, somewhere along the way, we fell into a bit of a rut and it came to mean "lots of achingly lovely soundscapes replete with fey, wispy female vocals, wave sounds and fluttering flamenco guitar". This collection from Rare Wiri, then - ranging as it does from Jerome La Souris' disco-fied take on MAW classic 'To Be In Love' to the proggy throb of Cuz Electric's 'Polly', and from the nu-boogie strut of Sauco's 'Get Off' to Rayko's 'Drive', which comes on like coldwave meets yacht rock - is a good chance to remind ourselves of what 'Balearic' was originally meant to be about!

Review: With a title like 'Cosmic Memories' your middle name doesn't need to be Sherlock to work out what's going on here, as Rare Wiri bring us a nine-track collection that pays homage to the trippy, synth-fuelled disco of early 80s Italy. Who better to kick things off, then, than cosmic disco originator Daniel Baldelli, with his and DJ Rocca's remix of Manolo's 'Amalfi Drive'? That sets the tone nicely for an album that's long on glacial synths, 80s-sounding electronic drum beats, Euro-style vox and dramatic magenta blusher... okay, you can only actually HEAR the first three of those, but you get the idea! Phoreski's 'Slow Down' stands out for yours truly, packing as it does a little more of Da Funk.

With 23 tracks on offer there's no room here to go into them all individually, and you probably have a pretty good idea of the label's particular electronic, 80s-leaning flavour of nu-disco anyway. Suffice to say, then, that Rare Wiri's many existing fans will be more than satisfied while newbies - if there are any left! - should start with AINZ's chunky, sleazy 'Hangover', the Italo strut of From Beyond's 'Non Analogue', MR Gee's throbbing 'Gravity', Rune Lindbaek's sci-fi refix of Ilya Santana's 'Cosmos Rising' or, a personal fave, Kelton Prime's 'Disco Arpeggio', wherein nu-disco meets garage vox...

Review: Rare Wiri's latest collection of club-focused cut-jobs comes courtesy of Uptown Funk, a recently formed, Huddersfield-based DJ/producer collective focused on disco, funk, soul and house music. It's a quietly impressive debut from the Yorkshire-based crew, offering a quartet of filter-sporting, gently tooled-up re-edits. They begin with the bouncy and spacey disco-funk grooves of 'Hit', before opting for a more percussive vibe on housed-up disco workout 'Goes On'. Heavyweight disco-funk vibes are supplied via sax-sporting number 'Believe It', while closing cut 'Extra Sensory Perception' does a good job in turning disco classic 'My Baby's Got ESP' into a swirling peak-time stomper.

Review: As the late Meat Loaf informed us, two out of three ain't bad... but two out of four is the best we can do when it comes to identifying the source material for this batch of Uptown Funk re-edits. Opener 'A Brighter Shade Of Blue' draws on 1978's 'Perfect Love Affair' by Prelude regulars Constellation Orchestra (AKA The Saturday Night Band), while The Michael Zager Band's 'Music Fever' from the same year informs 'Got The Fever'. So much for the vocal disco stompers: 'Hondo' and 'The Ride', meanwhile, draw on rawer funk sources, 'The Ride' having a Blaxploitation-y feel while 'Hondo' adds a dash of tropical/Latin spirit.

Delivering an electro, industrial pop and synth wave number that references all matter of '80s movie soundtracks, "Ghost" comes fixed with an authentic rerub by New Yorkian legend Man Parrish! Furthermore there's Aman 'Aimes" Ellis' dubbed-out acid makeover and adding a Euro-dance vibe to the collection is Australian producer Hysteric with his ghoulish night driving version.

Review: Tunesmith's breakout 'Disco Classic' featured on his 'Slow Disco' album earlier this year, but evidently he liked the title so much he's recycled it for this, his second Rare Wiri full-length in just six months. While 'Slow Disco' was a 'does what it says on the tin' job, the title this time is perhaps more in keeping with Throbbing Gristle's industrial/noise classic '20 Jazz Funk Greats', in that you won't find much in the way of straight-up, 70s-inspired disco here. Instead, Tunesmith carves out a new musical niche all of his own that sits somewhere between shimmering nu-disco, indie and out-and-out pop, with a heavy 80s influence - not least because 'Bands From The 80s' namechecks the likes of Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, Tears For Fears and FGTH!

Review: No need to start invoking the Trades Descriptions Act here: 'Slow Disco' is what it says on the box, and slow disco is exactly what you'll find inside. Guitarist and producer Klaus Wienerroither has several long-players as Tunesmith under his belt already, dating back to 2006 and ranging in style from indie-rock to squelchy broken beat and electronic pop, but this album adopts a far more mirrorball-oriented aesthetic, and as such will appeal to fans of artists such as The Phenomenal Handclap Band or Escort. For this writer, it's the tracks that feature Mara Miletic's vocals that stand out - particularly recent single 'Disco Classic' and the irrestistibly catchy 'Feels Good'.

Review: No, Tunesmith - true identity unknown - isn't being a massive egotist in calling his new release for Rayko's Rare Wiri label 'Disco Classic'; instead, the title merely references the plainitive one-line female "play me a disco classic now" vocal. The Original version is a mellow, midtempo affair, with dense layers of reverberating sound underpinned by a rock-solid bassline, and probably one for the warm-up or those post-club sessions. Sauco's remix, meanwhile, adds 4/4 kicks, handclaps and swap out the b-line for a more electronic one, and as such is undoubtedly the better bet for dancefloor play - though both rubs have their charms for sure.

Review: Tony Johns has a long string of re-edit EPs under his belt, most of them self-released. This latest batch of reworks, though, have been snapped up by Rayko's Rare Wiri label - unsurprisingly, perhaps, as they draw on much the same school of 80s boogie and electro-disco that's inspired so much of the label's recent output. 'Zulu' reworks the 1981 cut of the same name by UK duo The Quick, while 'Little Love' revisits 'Gotta Little Love' by German new wave/disco chanteuse Angela (Werner) from 1984. 'Sweet Loving', meanwhile - source unidentified - is all fat 80s bass and squealing synths.

Review: Full marks to re-editor Tony Johns for casting his net nice and wide here, as he reworks three largely forgotten gems from the 1970s. Okay, so funk veterans Slave (who supplied the 1977 original of 'Slide') are a fairly obvious target for some re-edit justice. Less so perhaps Dionne Warwick, whose monster of a torch soul belter 'You're Gonna Need Me' from 1973 becomes 'Want Me Back'. But the real surprise here is 'Be Like You', a highly polished and utterly irresistible yacht rocker that turns out to be a rework of a 1977 track by the Alan Parsons Project. Seriously, who knew?

Review: South London lad Tony Johns returns to Rare Wiri with two tracks of uncertain genesis: he's probably best known for his re-edits but he does make original tracks as well, and which category these two fall into we couldn't tell you. Either way, though, 'Hidden Sadness' is a hazy, pulsating, Balearic-ish instrumental jam, with the synths mostly to the fore but also sporting a nice little piano interlude in the mid-section, while 'Synthsational' is more uptempo and packs a heftier bottom end, making it the pick to these ears. If electronic disco is your bag, this is one to check for sure.

Review: A truly international affair, this, as Mexico's Tomas Malo teams up with French counterparts Djeko & K'You for an EP on Spanish label Rare Wiri. The title track here is a sumptuous, late 70s-flavoured disco workout, with chords that are reminiscent (whether intentionally or otherwise) of The Whispers' 'And The Beat Goes On' and a full-phat bassline. 'Shiba Bam', meanwhile, takes us right back to the earliest days of house but distinguishes itself from the herd via the use of an attention-getting, almost hypnotic, sing-song male vocal in an unidentified language.

Review: Taking a brief break from promoting the work of like-minded Spanish disco freaks. Rare Wiri boss Rayko has decided to offer up a thrill-a-minute EP from London-based pals Takao and Theon Bower. They open with the filter-smothered heaviness that is "Thunderbird", a riotous romp in which slamming new house drums, layered percussion and mazy new synthesizer solos mingle with righteous, horn-fired sections of a vintage disco-funk heater. They change tack slightly on "Acenda O Farol", a similarly filter-heavy, disco-house style bounce-along that makes extensive use of elements from what sounds like a deliciously camp and over the top South American disco record.

Now he returns to the former stable with two tracks that operate in the currently rather busy hinterland between cosmic/Italo disco and progressive house. 'Arcadia' is all about the bright, dreamy pads which sit atop a solid, chunky backbeat and give the track a euphoric, hands-in-the-air, Ibeefa-friendly kinda feel, while 'Flying High' is a slightly more laidback, contemplative affair - one for lounging by the pool rather than strutting your stuff on the podium.

Review: You'll never get to meet Svoboda Zvuka, because Svoboda Zvuka isn't a person: instead it's the name of an unusual project that sees different musicians all over the world collaborating on tracks remotely. On average, we're told, each track takes around 48 hours to make and is the result of five or six different producers' labours. So who's behind the lazy Balearic throb of the original version of 'Eeya' is anybody's guess, but we can tell you that Belida's remix drops the tempo and turns up the bass squelch, giving the track an almost New Beat-ish feel, while Santai ploughs a more spangly nu-disco furrow.

Review: Irish DJ/producer Stephen Richards, who hosts OpenTempo FM's DiscoDaze radio show, serves up two nu-disco/disco-house originals here. 'Jiggery Pokery' feels like a simple chugging, looping groove on first hearing, but listen more closely and you'll realise there are all manner of musical elements - wordless vocal snips, a sunny sax line, string stabs and more - drifting in and out, helping to maintain dancefloor interest for the full seven-and-three-quarter minutes. 'Bright Nightlight' has a more straight-up 80s Euro feel, while finally Ziggy Phunk's remix takes the title track into similar territory - shut your eyes and you're in a nightclub scene from 'Miami Vice'!

As Sirs he surfaces with a quality EP of four sides and the record goes deep into cosmic space and classy vocoder territory with the inter-dimensional "Pookish", while New York mafiosos are referenced in the post-punk, drum rolls and heavy Italo sound of "Nosa Costra". Strands of rock and minimalism combine between the socialistic and angsty gestures of "Ja Gakaki" with the voice of a most alluring German devil hidden deep within "Der Trip".

Review: Peter Shalvoy is no newcomer to the scene: a DJ around NYC for over 20 years, he's perhaps best known for his long-running residency at the infamous Nell's. These days, though, he's relocated to Las Vegas and is concentrating his efforts on his productions. Like this one, for instance: a gloriously lounge-y and, yes, slightly cheesy disco number that harks back to the style's earliest days in the mid-70s with its male and female soul vocals. There's no great reinvention of the wheel going on, but those female 'aaah-aaaahs' in the chorus are worth the price of admission on their own!

Review: If it's straight-up, trad-sounding deep house vibes you're after then Rare Wiri might not always be the first place you'd look, but they've come up trumps with this fine EP from comedically-monikered London lad Sesh Juan. The mellow but still surprisingly pacey 'Flutes For Shoots' leads the charge - and there are no prizes for guessing which woodwind instrument plays a starring role here - while 'Chateau Neuf' itself is a slightly more meandering and lower-tempo outing that's in danger of getting all a bit "drifty and polite" until, around the 2:30 mark, in comes a treated female vocal snip to die for. Don't die for it, though - just buy it!

Review: Cal Gibson, a Nottingham-raised veteran producer best-known for his role in early noughties outfit Neon Heights, has had a new lease of life since re-emerging as Secret Soul Society. He has a decidedly Balearic album on the way for Hell Yeah! Recordings, but first there's the matter of this four-tracker for Rayko's Rare Wiri imprint. Gibson begins in predictably loved-up mood via the wide-eyed, sample-heavy tactility of 'Its Magic', an acid-splashed cut of the sort that fellow Notts boy Naill used to offer up, before successfully cutting up and dubbing out some heady Philly Soul on the druggy flex of 'Mighty Fine'. 'Minding The Seasons' is an attractive Balearic nu-disco throb-job, while 'Who Is The Don' is a spaced-out slow jam that makes great use of samples from a swamp funk treat.

Review: Something of a departure here for former Neon Heights man Cal Gibson's Secret Soul Society, as out go the dusty lo-fi beats and hazy Balearic loveliness, and in steps some electronic disco struttery to take their place. That's not to say the EP as a whole isn't still a fairly mellow affair - it's not all angles, dry ice and cheekbones - but the synth collection definitely gets a bit more of a bashing this time out! The title track in particular gets quite eardrum-piercing in places, though 'Wonder' is a bit closer in spirit to earlier releases, a languorous headnodder for those times when being vertical just doesn't seem worth the effort.

We can't actually tell you a lot about the two artists involved - neither of them seems to have any online presence whatsoever - but what they've come up with between 'em is a cover of Beatles classic 'A Hard Day's Night', delivered in such a way that you'd swear this record had come out of early 80s New York. Just to drive the point home, the New York Dangerous Mix ramps up the camp 80s-isms to the max while swapping out the bassline for a 303-rendered version, but it's the Monyaka-esque Original that takes the gold.

'The Day The Earth Stood Still' is probably the pick for the hardcore Italo-philes with its Carpenter-esque synths, 'Blue Monday'-nodding b-line and sci-fi sonic stylings, while the smoother-flowing 'Italians...' probably has slightly broader dancefloor appeal. Competing the package is 'End Titles', a midpaced affair that's essentially a homage to the synth-pop and coldwave of early/mid-80s Europe - one for those whose DJ sets include obscure Falco album cuts n' such.

There's much to enjoy on "The Wiri Tapes", from the hybrid boogie/nu-disco bounce of "Catch My Eye" - all D-Train style synth-bass, chiming mid-80s melodies, fizzing synth solos and clipped guitar riffs - to the dreamy mid-tempo warmth of closing cut "Get Off", another tactile number whose sustained chords, bubbly electronics and morning-fresh sounds are as sun-kissed as they come. Sandwiched in between you'll find the appropriately named "Cosmic Coin", a slow motion throb-job built around Italo-disco style arpeggio lines, swirling chords and drifting vocal samples.

Rayko - "Baby" - (10:39) 115 BPM Hot
Review: Two Spanish stalwarts of the nu-disco and edits scene join forces on this two-track EP. As you'd expect from Rayko's Rare Wiri label, the emphasis is on re-edits, though there's enough additional production and contemporary trickery on display than you're average scalpel cut. Ilya Santana steps up first with "Logic", a decidedly cosmic, and trippy re-build of Japanese producer Logic System's 1981 electronic classic "Clash (Chinjyu of Sun)". Rayko, meanwhile, drops "Baby", a similarly dubbed-out and floor-friendly remake of what sounds like a forgotten Italo classic. Knowing Rayko, it could just as easily be something well known put through the mangler; either way, it's one of his strongest cuts for some time.
