Review: The new EP, "Offshore Sunsets," by the collaborative effort of Steve Cobby (of Fila Brazilia fame) and Third Attempt washes over the listener like a warm, hazy summer evening. Released on Paper Recordings, this three-track offering is a delightful exploration of Balearic house, perfect for unwinding or soundtracking a laid-back gathering. The opening track, "B Human," sets the tone with its "rolling, hypnotic, spaced-out" vibe (as described by Paper Recordings). Floating minor keys, a walking bassline, and a gorgeously chugging guitar create a sun-drenched soundscape. This is Balearic bliss at its finest. Third Attempt takes the reins for the aptly titled "Language Of The Heart." This track leans into a more downtempo, a perfect offering for those late-night sessions or creating a chilled atmosphere. The duo reunites for the closing track, "Feeling Seen." This hazy, jazzy broken beat number brings the EP to a satisfying conclusion. Deep basslines intertwine with funky elements, showcasing the collaborative magic between Cobby and Third Attempt.

Since then, the label has gone on to be a leading light on the nu-disco and nu Balearic scenes. Fittingly, this expansive tenth anniversary set was put together by the Glimmers, and features two solo DJ mixes featuring label highlights aplenty. For DJs, the real bonus is the huge selection of unmixed tracks on display, which adeptly showcases the depth and variety of the label's output. Review: Vocally-led by child sensation, Foster Sylvers, The Sylvers family grew into their own throughout the 70s, and 1973's The Sylvers II really instilled their sound as the gold standard fo funk music. We're talking about a family of kids who were all incredible musicians, truly offering the world a heartfelt performance, whichever aesthetic they were going for. Mr Bongo has delivered the goods once again with this reissue, and we are totally stoked about the fact that we are receiving the sort of funk and soul which still has not been experienced by everyone. It is about the mystique, it is about the charm, and it's most certainly high time for some soothing soul direct from the source - oh, and check that bassline on the magnetic "Handle It". Review: The Tubbs are a new project from Hungarian deep house producer Forteba (AKA Kriszti?n Dobrocsi) and partner-in-crime Marcell Dudas (AKA Carmel) and this, their debut long-player, follows two previous singles on Mole Listening Pearls. Obviously with 14 tracks on offer there's some degree of musical variety, but 80s-influenced downtempo/Balearic vibes are the order of the day overall, with cuts ranging from the blissed-out slo-mo funk of 'Give A Little, Take A Little' (one of the two aforesaid trailer singles) to the 'Miami Vice'-ish vibes of 'Better Living Through Chemistry' and livelier cuts like 'Love At Second Sight' (the other single), which has something of an 'Ibiza '89' kinda feel.

Review: Brief Encounter were a nine-piece band from North Carolina who made their debut with 1977's 'Introducing' album. 'We Want To Play' followed on Music Town Records in 1981, original copies of which will set you back north of ?300... luckily, those democratising dons of the reissue Athens Of The North are on hand to bring you the same album for a fraction of the price! While not lacking in standout cuts - see the title track or 'Open Up Your Heart', for starters - it's an album that's perhaps most interesting as a musical snaphot of a time when 70s disco and soul was inexorably mutating into 80s boogie and electrofunk.

Review: Valique's decision to shift his emphasis from funk breaks to disco edits a few years back now seems a wise one. His popular V's Edits series is now on its 17th volume, and as usual there's plenty of tried-and-tested dancefloor fodder on offer. While the EP's most outstanding track is a winding, decidedly Balearic, downtempo remix of Bryan Ferry's "Slave To Love", the rest of the EP is a funky and forthright as you'd expect. Highlights include a bouncy rework of Michael Jackson ("Heart B"), and an oh-so-smooth cut-up of Billy Paul (the sumptuous strings and eyes-closed guitar solos of "Sooner or Later"), but to be honest it's all pretty darn tasty.

Review: Given that she first worked with the Classic Music Company 15 years ago, it seems fitting that the label is releasing the long serving Chicagoan's debut album. Described by its creator as a "very personal statement", the set contains a mixture of remastered gems from the vaults and fresh new material - including a swathe of collaborative cuts featuring headline-grabbing names such as Seven Davis Jr, Joi Cardwell, Sam Sparro and regular studio sparring partner Tim K. It's naturally rooted in deep house, but also rather varied, with the First Lady of Chicago House variously doffing a cap to classic jack-tracks, smooth soulful fare, synth-laden boogie-house, wide-eyed late '80s fare and Dancemania-inspired hip-house. The set also contains a rather wonderful cover version of Carly Simon's "Why".

Soulful touches of jazz make it into the deep house affairs of Pepe Link's "Gypsy Love Affair" and amid the bassline mechanics of "Man With The Red Face". But let's not forget the man Kenneth Bager himself, who chips on with an ambient edit to Laudness' "Atlantish" - think 80s soundtrack music - next to the handpan drumming, balearic vocals, electronic drum programming and spanish guitar of "Avisa A (feat DJ DIVO & OliO)". Review: While they may have spent the last few years focusing on disco, Italo and electrofunk revivalism, the Lee brothers have released their fair share of deliciously Balearic material over the years. It's this side of their work that's showcased on To The Sunset & Beyond, a compilation that picks breezy, humid and sun-kissed highlights from their 20-year career. There's naturally plenty to get the juices flowing, from the cello-laden brilliance of stone cold classic "In The Trees", and the twinkling samba-soul of "Heartbeat", to the blustery live Afro-house of "Kariba" and string-laden ambience of "Weightless". There's also another chance to revisit Rae & Christian's cheery, rolling remix of "Samba", which first surfaced on Nuphonic way back in 1999.

Review: Given the success of Faze Action's first trawl through the more sun-kissed sections of their vast back catalogue, it's little surprise to see the Lee brothers deliver a second volume. As with its predecessor, To The Sunset & Beyond shuffles around stylistically, taking in lilting Brazilian flavours (1999 single "Samba", the folksy "Struck"), Afro-influenced electrofunk (recent Zeke Manyika collaborations "Got To Find A Way" and "To Love Is To Grow"), dub disco (the Boogie Central mix of "Danae's Journey"), and, of course, plenty of cello-laden treats (a rare alternative version of "Moving Cities", the wonderful, Arthur Russell-ish "Venus & Mars"). In other words, it's a deliciously summery collection of tried-and-tested tracks. Recommended.

Review: Given his credentials and track record, it's unsurprising that original disco and boogie artists are willing to let Joey Negro play around with their biggest hits. His first stab at this kind of multi-track remix, 2014's Remixed With Love, was such a success that he's decided to unleash another swathe of revisions over two vinyl double-packs. This edition features some killer reworks, including a sublime, on-point rearrangement of Gwen McRae's "Keep The Fire Burning" and a rolling, dubbed-out version of Grace Jones' "Pull Up To The Bumper" that rivals Larry Levan's classic remix. The veteran producer also successfully turns Pockets' "Come Go With Me" into a classic soulful house rub, and pushes Thelma Houston's "I'm Here Again" further towards disco anthem territory.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from each new album in Joey Negro's "Remixed With Love" series, namely fantastic new revisions of classic disco, boogie, soul, electro and jazz-funk classics created using the original multi-track tapes. This third volume naturally contains a few inspired revisions of well-known cuts - a riotous take on The Fatback Band's "Do The Bus Stop", an astonishing, dubbed-out version of the Temptations' "Law of the Land" and a soaring, life-affirming rearrangement of Patrice Rushen's "Never Give You Up" included - but also some suitably smart tweaks of lesser-known gems. These include a sublime revision of the APX's '80s gem "Loose Yourself To The Groove" and an insatiable take on Mass Production's "Shante" full of jammed-out electric piano solos and rubbery electric bass.

Review: Fittingly, L.I.E.S' 200th release comes from the label's founder, Ron Morelli, and counts as his most expansive release to date. Officially, it's Morelli's eighth solo album, though it feels different to its many predecessors. For starters, it's largely club-focused (many of his albums are experimental or industrial affairs), with Morelli curtailing his love of gritty, lo-fi noise and pitch-black sonics in favour of jacking drum machine beats inspired by acid house and Chicago jack tracks. Of course, the raw synth sounds and nods to EBM and industrial funk are still there, alongside a smattering of bittersweet chords and gothic new-wave motifs, but they're no longer the focal point. As a result, we get the best of both worlds, with Morelli's trademark style playing second fiddle to a desire to make people dance.

Review: Israeli progressive house hero Guy J's career has gone from strength to strength in the last few years with most of his epic journey tracks being released on the legendary John Digweed's Bedrock imprint. Quite fitting then that he now releases his first full length for the label, with they describe as "a vast melting pot of sonic exploration." Starting out with the driving percussive techno of "Bungalow" and the heavenly "8 Minute Flight" it's then business as usual on tracks like "Fools Dont Last" or "Live Another Day" which nail that progressive journey sound that he's now synonymous with. Other highlights include the dark groove of "Nirvana" the eleven minute long epic "The Love & The Fear" and the atmospheric slow burner "Paradox". There's a lot to get through but it's all killer, no filler. Also comes as two continuous mixes as bonus tracks by Guy J himself.

Review: Label co-owner Flash Atkins is at the controls for this second celebration of Paper Music's first 25 years. While there's a smattering of material from the label's first 15 years, the majority of Atkins' selections come from releases put out over the last decade. Like its' predecessor, it's an action-packed affair full of high quality cuts. Standouts include the swirling nu-disco bliss of Rave-Enka's "Honningen", the hazy lounge-jazz-meets-house sleaziness of Diskobeistet's "Birklunden", the piano-powered chunkiness of Leon Sweet's "Beat Slave Auto", the analogue deep house bubbliness of Doc L Junior's "Twilight" and the early morning deep house hypnotism of Ryan Kick's remix of Space Coast's "Just Past Midnight". Best of all, though, is the TB-303-powered hypno-house insanity of Ralph Myerz and The Kosmik Diamondz 14-minute "Acid 4 Eddie".

Review: With 25 tracks to choose from, this second volume of Mango Sounds' anniversary collection certainly offers plenty of dancefloor bang for your hard-earned buck. No room here to go into every track, obviously, but overall the emphasis is on fairly faithful homages to the original US disco sounds of the late 70s/early 80s, with the odd excursion into more boogie- or funk-inspired territory. With cuts from the likes of Igor Gonya, Ken@Work, Hotmood and C. Da Afro plus a host of more up-and-coming names, this is one more trad-minded disco lovers (as opposed to Italo-fiendin' hipsters) will want to check for sure.

This latest is a compilation of their best releases from 2012, and considering their pretty hefty back catalogue, they had their work cut out for them. Review: Italian singer Gabriele Poso has recorded with Nicola Conte and Osunlade, on whose Yoruba Soul label she released her debut album, From The Genuine World, in 2008. This second album picks off where that left off, offering sultry songs and summery soul steeped in afro-cuban rhythms, Spanish flamenco, sweaty salsa, breezy jazz and foot-tapping salsa. While occasionally earnest, it's largely an enjoyable journey, with glittering instrumentals (see "Dona Flor") complimenting the impressive range of songs on offer (Poso is equally adept at slow jams as uptempo floorfillers). There's also a decent collaboration with Osunlade, in the form of the super-soulful "You Don't Love Me".

Review: Strobocop's Cologne-based Karaoke Kalk continues its seemingly never-ending run of form with this beautiful - and no doubt soon to be underrated - LP from Finnish sound engineer, Hannu Karjalainen. Much drone or ambient is released in this day and age, but how much of it is alluring? Does it ever leave you with something lasting? Well, Hannu's music certainly does because there is never a doubt in our minds that the artist is trying to do something different. For real, though. A Handful Of Dust In A Desert is not an easy album to describe or categorise, and that is exactly the reason for why it feels so relevant. Its abundance of drones are elegantly placed throughout, often leaving the listener with thick walls of sound that meander across the room like fluid beams of light. It's a heady experience, and that's exactly what we love about it. 10/10.

Review: Fans of Mark Williams may prefer the original versions on this release, but there is no doubt that this remix package scores highly on diversity. The remixes of "Change of Heart" range from the heavy, rolling tribal techno and whooshing effects of DJ Cristao & Toni Alvarez's take to the pulsing bass and chord stabs of Giacomo Stallone's version and Jesus Soblechero's tracky, stripped back interpretation. "The Low Talker" is also available in a variety of reshapes: from Josh Love's disco'n'strings sampling tribal pounder to Miche & Mirzinho's Ben Sims-inspired Hardgroove take and the grandiose swagger of Ortin Cam's epic take - indeed there is no doubt that there is something for everyone in the techno audience.

Review: Andrew Field-Pickering is a unique talent. Under the Maxmillion Dunbar guise, he's treated listeners to a string of gorgeously kaleidoscopic releases that join the dots between sparkling electronica, E'd-up disco, next-level Balearica and effervescent deep house. With Woo, his first release for RVNG INTL, he's at it again. "Woo" is deliciously fluid, pitting brightly coloured electronic melodies and darting synths against stuttering drum machine rhythms and cascading chords. The beatless "Shampoo" is similarly lucid, delivering a steamy tropical shower of glistening electronics and synthesized steel drums. It's only the formidably robust "Drift" - a Disco Nihlist-ish exercise in analogue groovery - that breaks the spell. Essential.

Review: Lino Rodrigues, better known as re-editor extraordinaire Alkalino, takes us on another trip down Memory Lane to the 1980s. Coming under the scalpel for a spot of cosmetic surgery this time out are (in order) Prince's 'Gett Off', Laura Branigan's 'Self Control', Oran 'Juice' Jones's 'The Rain', Madonna's 'Everybody', Marillion's 'Kayleigh', AR Kane's 'A Love From Outer Space', Prefab Sprout's 'When Love Breaks Down' and Kajagoogoo's 'Too Shy'. It's an eclectic selection for sure, and which tracks hit hardest for you will probably depend on how you feel about the originals, but give all of 'em a whirl because some of the reworks are quite radical in approach. And yes, we known 'Gett Off' is from 1991 but let's not get pedantic, eh?

Review: This impressively expansive collection from experienced remixer Valique showcases some of the best downtempo and Balearic edits from his popular V's Edits series. There's certainly plenty to get the blood pumping and the juices flowing throughout, from a chugging, ten-minute take on Pink Floyd ('Brickwall') and a pleasingly squelchy take on Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams' 'Lose Yourself To Dance' (here renamed 'Lose Your Elf'), to a chunky dub-house re-imagining of Jimmy Cliff classic 'The Harder They Come' and a loopy, hypnotic, mid-tempo disco-rock revision of T-Rex ('Jewelry'). Throw in party-hearty takes on cuts from Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and the Beach Boys (an odd but impactful reimagining of 'Good Vibrations') and you have a great value compilation.

Review: This an altogether epic offering from Deetron; a vast collection of un-mixed tracks from his brilliant DJ Kicks mix (naturally included as a bonus cut) that is little less than a lesson in the evolution of techno over the last three decades. Amongst the 38 tracks you'll find fine representatives of a myriad of sub-genres (intelligent techno, dub techno, IDM, ambient techno, gospel techno, and so on), as well as past, present and future classics (Damier and Trent's "Morning Factory", Spacetime Continuum's "Swing Factory", Mark Ernestus's recent Equinoxx remix, the Motor City bliss of Rhythim is Rhythim AKA Derrick May's "Ka-o-tic Harmony", a brilliant old Black Dog Productions workout). In other words, it's a breathlessly brilliant collection of both well-known and obscure gems. It comes heartily recommended.

Inevitably, some of the resulting concoctions work better than others - and which you think that applies to may depend on your views on the original source material - but if you're looking for a way to drag non-house/disco lovers onto the floor, this collection should serve you well.

Review: With the 2016 Ibiza summer season in full swing, Dave 'Joey Negro' Lee has gathered together a bumper collection of label tracks that are currently doing the business on the White Isle. There are few surprises amongst the 28 selections - think swinging piano-house, soulful grooves, sun-kissed broken beat, contemporary disco reworks and synth-heavy boogie-house - but the quality threshold remains remarkably high throughout. Highlights include Lee's glistening 2016 re-rub of his vintage Doug Willis anthem "Spread Love", a deliciously loose and synth-laden Fouk rework of The Sunburst Band, the bad-ass boogie business of Spirit Catcher's "Rendez-Vous", and a killer 1995 rework of Fonda Rae's "Over Like A Fat Rat" from U.S house legend Victor Simonelli.
